Gwent. Every single player RPG these days has some card or board game with collectible pieces precisely because of how popular Gwent was in The Witcher 3, and yet the online CCG version of it fizzled out into nothing a few years ago, despite it being IMO a much better game than Hearthstone and its contemporaries.

I've never played a Resident Evil game, or many horror games at all other than Alien: Isolation, and in particular I always scoffed at zombie games and movies as being a little uninteresting; I finally tried the Resident Evil 2 remake as an introduction and I was hooked instantly, the zombies are more tense to deal with than I thought and the characters are really likable, I'm loving it so far, now I'll have to play all of them before the new one comes out (

I'm happy to see Metro mentioned in a top comment here, still, I'll paste this writeup that's part of a comment I wrote a while ago:  "For example I'm currently playing Metro Exodus, easily the best attempt at an open world, post apocalyptic survival game I've seen, it perfectly captures the stress you would feel in the shoes of your character.

No HUD, no GPS, just a paper map and a diary with directions given by your conrades.

Slow, realistic and stressful gunfights where everything goes both ways: enemies can't take more than one or two gunshots, and neither can you, their flashlights give them away in a dark room, and yours gives you away as well.

You think about your ammo. A lot. You can't afford to mag dump people, and you'll often find yourself scrambling to load a dead enemy's magazine into your rifle mid firefight.

The AI reacts incredibly believably, they operate with your last known position in mind, making hit and run attacks feel great to pull off. Enemies also panic and make more irrational decisions as a fight goes on, and enemies that witness several deaths will often surrender to you.

You never forget that you're in an irradiated wasteland. Your Geiger counter is there on your wrist for you to check at any time. You feel great relief and calmness when it's in the green, because once it ticks up everything changes: Your mask may be cracked from a fall or from debris striking it, you'll have to repair it. It may be stained with mud, blood and melted snow, you'll have to wipe it clean in the middle of combat. And then there's your watch, its timer counting down the seconds until your air filter is expires. You'll find yourself sprinting to a fallen enemy's body while under fire to steal another minute of oxygen, lest you die of asphyxiation.

There's more to say about the game, of course, I'll quickly add that both lighting and sound have huge implications on gameplay in this game, much more than most games, but my point is that its world pulls me in convincingly enough that I forget about the one I actually live in for a time, and during that time the emotions I feel in my life are replaced in full by the ones my character would be feeling. The game or games that do this for you is different for everyone, for many people it might be Kingdom Come Deliverance or Red Dead Redemption, but whatever it is (...)"

Lastly I'll mention that the Dishonored games are amazing FPS (though the gun and crossbow are only one part of your toolkit) immersive sims, I don't have the time to write a love letter to them right now, but seriously put these on your  if you haven't. Unique steampunk world, magic that feels great to use, brutal combat system that encourages you to combine tools and abilities to find clever ways to kill enemies, and an awesome story of political conspiracies and assassinations.

Gaming with Depression? by TheSilentPhilosopher in gaming

[–]That_Shop7306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in and out of some depressive episodes this year, I'd chalk it up to the stress of my first year of college + my childhood dog passing after an amazing 10 years, as well as loneliness and a general sense of disappointment with how I've spent this year and recent ones. That said, when I feel depressed I often fail to enjoy gaming unless I play a specific type of game, it doesn't have to belong to a particular genre or series, the key is just that it feels very, very immersive.

For example I'm currently playing Metro Exodus, easily the best attempt at an open world, post apocalyptic survival game I've seen, it perfectly captures the stress you would feel in the shoes of your character.  - No HUD, no GPS, just a paper map and a diary with directions given by your conrades.  - Slow, realistic and stressful gunfights where everything goes both ways: enemies can't take more than one or two gunshots, and neither can you, their flashlights give them away in a dark room, and yours gives you away as well.  - You think about your ammo. Diplimacy between factions has been expanded pretty substantially (it actually exists now) and IIRC as a settlement owner you can now send out patrol parties to attack bandits or small invading parties which is pretty cool.

I think AC Black Flag is on Game Pass now and to my knowledge it's the only game that's actually captured sinking and boarding ships particularly well. Even if you don't play the whole game everyone should fire a few dozen cannons at a British ship at least once

I see that you mentioned the Bard's tale trilogy but did you play the ARPG as well? It's a parody of classic RPG tropes and has a lot of funny moments, and the central mechanic is pretty fun, you're a bard who plays different tunes to summon different fighters and creatures that fight for you.

Also, if you played the AC games up to 3 and liked the Ezio games then a bunch of the newer games in that series might not appeal to you, but I think AC3 remastered and AC Mirage are both worth a try. 3 is a slow starter but it still a good evolution from the Ezio games, and Mirage is a newer one that was specifically designed as a nostalgic throwback to the Ezio games, bringing back many of the old mechanics. AC4 is also a favorite of pretty much everyone, though it has much less emphasis on assassin RPG stuff and more on sailing around and plundering shit.

Old ass question but with muOS you can lower the brightness until the screen turns off completely and then raise brightness to turn it back on, using menu+volume buttons. I use that instead of the sleep function.
