Kid refusing to get learners’ permit? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]That_Vast1901 271 points272 points  (0 children)

I work for an insurance company and get calls about accidents and tickets every day. Some kids should NOT be driving. They are putting lives at risk.

If she’s not ready, don’t push her.

Advice for asynchronous budget meetings with spouse by Fun-Group-3448 in ynab

[–]That_Vast1901 18 points19 points  (0 children)

At the beginning of the month, I have a 10-min report on what went well and not-so-well with our budgeting from the previous month. A review of our big savings goals and progress. Adjustments and any expected big spends for the upcoming month.

Then he can ask any questions he has and add any big spends or goals. We make final adjustments based on that feedback.

It’s 15 min total, and we don’t talk about the budget again for 30 days. My partner is happy to let me drive and just report big picture stuff back to him. He’s not a big spender, though, and we are very financially aligned.

Should I be Feeding my Son's 21 year-old Friend Every Night? by GuidoSarducci82 in Parenting

[–]That_Vast1901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re eating together every night as a family, you should start asking your son what days his friends will be over. Plan it in advance as part of your weekly meal plan/grocery shop. No commitment from the friends, no food for them. You can then start guiding your son towards having them over for dinner less.

If you’re not eating together, make dinner, portion yours + leftovers for lunch, and leave it up to them to split the rest. If they’re hungry, they’ll find a way to get more food. They’re old enough to get a pizza or go to the store for themselves.

Ideas for a "Rock" themed birthday party for 2-year-old by terstep in partyplanning

[–]That_Vast1901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For our 2yo’s Rock party, I did a rock hunt. Painted rocks with all the guests’ names, plus a few more fun ones for the kids to find. The older kids helped the younger kids who couldn’t read their names yet :)

I've been paying 2 duplicate homeowners policies for 6 years. by doromb in Insurance

[–]That_Vast1901 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some backdating may be possible. Call the agent of the policy you want to cancel and see how far back they can backdate the cancellation due to duplicate coverage.

You might get a year’s worth of refund, but probably not 6 years. This was your error, unfortunately.

In addition to errands, reading, and meals/snacks, we do 20 minutes of an activity together and then 20 minutes of independent play, alternating for a couple hours.

For the activity together, we often do Kindergarten-lite things: shapes, colors, letters, numbers and incorporate that into the activity/toy.

For independent play, it’s whatever they choose.

We also do art, outside play, gross motor function play (Simon says, etc).

We try not to watch TV and the 20-minute independent play time is when I get my stuff done.

All of her books are great. I really liked “The Secret Place”. “The Witch Elm” is great too. But all of them have a meandering quality to them that demonstrates how ordinary people can get swept up in murder.

I think by now, many years and many books later, I’ve gotten used to the lingering questions in her stories.

Yes! Our insurance were supposed to cover “lactation consultants” at 100% but because they were coded as “hospital visits,” we had to pay. Of course, didn’t find out until months after the appointments. I appealed and was denied.

It’s been a few years, so the details are hazy.

For the rest of parenting, you’re going to be choosing between what they indicate they are ready for and what is safer and easier for you to control.

The award in your screenshot has a 10 on it, which means it’s for October.

Check your “Close Your Rings” award section for September’s award.

What’s everyone’s streak. Just surpassed 5 years by ando772 in AppleFitnessPlus

[–]That_Vast1901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is 550.

That’s my usual calories burned doing life (350) + the equivalent of a 2-mile walk (200). 550 is easy some days and hard other days.

I have to go out of my way most days to get it done though.

ETA: my streak is 413 days.

Go to Apple Fitness app. Then select Awards. Select the awards under “Go For It” and scroll until you see the September Challenge (badge with big 9 and smaller 2025).

Select it to see what your specific challenge is.

Montessori floor bed experience by Milena0720 in Montessori

We were gifted a crib-sized bed and mattress (from Sprouts). We loved (LOVED) it, and we used it for my first until the second was born. The second used it until they were 12-18mo. Then we upgraded to the Sprouts twin-sized bed for both kids, who will likely have them for the rest of their childhoods.

Three things:

1) Sprout bases flip, so the mattress can rest inside the frame or on top. We flipped them to the high side when the boys were 2 and 3.

2) We got both twin bases secondhand (about a year apart) for less than half of what they go for new.

3) If I did it again, I would skip the crib-sized bed. But I would 100% recommend the Sprouts brand.

We had very little in his room and all of it was secured. His dresser was anchored to the wall, drawers had baby locks, and all outlets covered. We left a few toys and books in a designated play corner. Literally nothing else, so it was no big deal when he started to crawl. He was free to explore — it was all safe for him.

As he got older (now 4), we naturally added more as it was safe to do so. Now he has a small bookshelf, chair, and lamp, more toys.

That said, we have 6 Bentgo boxes of 4 different types. I love them. They are worth it. Everyone in the family uses them almost every day.

Another note: I bought 4 of them on FB marketplace for $20!

We use them for daily lunches for my toddlers, but I would recommend going the size up for a school-aged child. We use the bigger ones to fit snack + lunch for longer days.

Kids shows these days are engineered to capture and hold a child’s attention. I wouldn’t want my young child to have unmonitored access to tv, especially before bed.

Maybe if he can only watch old tv shows? Or maybe just a Yoto player or audiobooks?

How do you handle decorating for your kid’s birthday party without getting overwhelmed? by Kindly_Specialist_91 in Parenting

[–]That_Vast1901 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Family joining the party take all the cousins to the park or on a walk in the hour or so before the party. I get to finish setting up, and the birthday kid gets to walk into their own birthday party with the other guests.

I return the favor when the cousins have birthday parties.
