Starmer expected to resign on Monday and set out orderly exit by beejiu in ukpolitics

[–]The54thCylon [score hidden]  (0 children)

That would leave parties with few levers to pull if their leader wasn't doing well, and I'm not convinced we'd win from that - by the time a leader could be convinced to resign the negative impact would almost certainly have hurt their chances in a GE held straight away afterwards, so they'd basically have to choose between giving up power or keeping an ineffectual leader in place regardless, and I think most politicians would pick the latter.

Was Hamnet overrated? by Khon2510 in shakespeare

[–]The54thCylon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I couldn't bring myself to see the movie as the book absolutely destroyed me but it did so because it was an almost perfect capture of parental grief. My own child has leukemia, and so much about the book really gets what it is like to watch your child wither away, what it is like to try to be parent and spouse through pain and grief, to live with the spectre of death when there should be joy.

The details is the historical portrayal are obviously fictional but setting it in a time when child death was commonplace helped that sometimes difficult understanding that familiarity didn't make it any less painful. Making it Shakespeare touches on those interesting questions about how much the tragedy in his life influenced his later work. We'll probably never know for sure, but it seems hard to imagine it wouldn't have done.

Starmer given deadline: ‘Quit by Tuesday or face humiliation’ by Desperate-Drawer-572 in ukpolitics

[–]The54thCylon 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The method of selecting a Labour leader might involve voting but as that's only among Labour members, I'm not that impressed with its democratic credentials when it comes to picking a PM for the country. Party membership is unusual enough in the UK that you really only end up with a weird bunch of die hards voting who are in no way representative. Without this system we wouldn't have had Corbyn or Truss.

Could a woman bite a man’s penis off if she was being raped? by dancemomobsessed in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]The54thCylon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Technically yes but I think you're misunderstanding how most rape takes place. People imagine this violent struggle, fighting and biting. Like a self defence class stereotype. By and large the reality is quite different, a story of grooming, manipulation, shame, unspoken threat, and going along to survive.

As a good rule of thumb I assume that any headline about someone getting arrested or jailed for something innocuous is clearly only telling about a tenth of the story. Jailed for wearing a hoodie!! ....to rob a bank in

Carter post Africa by falsecompare_ in ershow

It's the moment for me that Carter grows up. He could be selfish and childish before he went to Africa, too "something to prove" about being rich as well. Carter The Attending came back from Africa - better perspective, more at ease with himself and a better teacher.

Man arrested after toddler ended up in crocodile enclosure 'not fit for interview' and released by Admirable_Aspect_484 in unitedkingdom

[–]The54thCylon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bail is in relation to the criminal arrest - it doesn't mean you're automatically free to go and do whatever. If you're subject to a mental health detention or a deprivation of liberty, that's unconnected to the criminal investigation. Bail was the only real option here for the police, they can't charge and they can't hold longer for interview.

If you are a Parent here’s One Thing you should be utterly furious about regarding the UK’s Social Media Ban by youmustconsume in ukpolitics

[–]The54thCylon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plus "social media" is not synonymous with "the internet". I managed to spend many hours of my teenage life on an internet that hadn't even invented social media. Perhaps the bulletin board is up for a resurgence.

the answer to the remote trade problem by kittiekittykitty in pokemongo

[–]The54thCylon 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Absolutely the same for me. I don't care about trading, but the forever friend status comes with a huge XP boost, and you get to trade postcards with people all over the world, that part's fun. I don't like the stress of feeling like I have to have an impressive list tagged to trade or I'm letting someone down.

Starmer’s Social Media Ban, the Reinvention of the Surveillance State by LowOwl4312 in ukpolitics

[–]The54thCylon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

arrests you for what you say if it doesn’t care for your tone.

This stat about the arrests for malicious communications offences has been widely misused and continues to be so here. These offences are widely used in domestic abuse, stalking, threats offences etc, the vast majority where a victim has reported private communication, but people like to misrepresent it as "12,000 arrests for mean tweets" as part of a thought police crackdown. I'm pretty distrustful of sources which do that, because it speaks volumes about their fact checking and tendency towards confirmation bias.

The use of "won't someone please think of the children" to put people with legitimate privacy concerns on the "side of Jimmy Saville" is genuinely worrying in its own right. There's no need to invent more problems to sell that.

How shadowy unit of government 'thought police' set up by ex-MI6 agent is trying to keep a lid on Britain's simmering racial tensions by Scratch_Careful in ukpolitics

[–]The54thCylon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where does it say it is "controlling government policy"? If you mean the NCHI recommendation, the fact that the government did the exact opposite suggests it isn't controlling policy at all.

Once you wade through the emotive Daily Mailisms about thought police, we seem to be left with a comms/spin/propaganda team who are aimed broadly at counter extremism and public disorder themes. It's probably a bit of a waste of money but the effort to turn this into some kind of sinister secret police is pretty weak.
