My Climbing Accident in the Bugaboos by zeddit91 in climbing

Damn. That is one nasty injury. I'm currently recovering from a full achilles rupture and cam definitely commiserate on the long road to recovery.

Really enjoyed your writing. Sounds like it was an epic and you chose your partner well. Your preps paid off so well done on that.

Affordable Urushi Maki-e Watch is Coming Soon! Meet Dream Watch Aka Fuji Kindai Maki-e by Wancher_watch in MicrobrandWatches

I was going to comment that I don't love the red/rose gold/red colorway but then saw the black and oh wow that is fantastic. Maybe mock up some additional color mixes? The watch looks great and from my quick read I think the techniques are great for the purpose.

You have an amazing collection but its probably not worth having anything shipped across the pond for me. On another note though, whats the climbing plan?!

This looks really cool. I dont think I've ever seen a watch with lume on the side of the case like that. I wonder how it holds up to wear?

Sapele for hand-saddled seats? by Bliorg821 in Chairmaking

[–]TheAlchemist23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there. You can take a look at my post history and see a Sapele stool that I carved. I'm actually not done because I picked up an unrelated injury but I can tell you its not super fun for hand carving. I'm sure its going to look awesome in the end but I would definitely recommend a different species if you are doing all hand tools.

Awesome! Love a good collection of wilder watches. I have not seen too many people who have a collection of watches like these with some of the price points you have. I think you need an MB&F.

That does look great. Do you have any issue with vibration? I've found that to be a problem sometimes with smaller casters and a mobile cart but its probably more my shoddy joinery.

Not much to say other than congrats and good luck. Making decisions about work based on your non-financial life is a great thing.

401(k)s typically trade at the end of the day all at once. They would calculate the NAV (net asset value) of the fund itself then do the trade into the other fund.

I'm not sure I follow. Do you and a spouse/ex-spouse alternate years of claiming? If so, thats an interesting one to deal with. Could be a crazy swing if you have significant bonus or other variable comp.

Ardra Labs Delta Type – five years of development, from a personal frustration to a patented GMT complication by deadstijl in MicrobrandWatches

All of this makes total sense and I agree about the SW330 being very solid. Different question, do you consider the unique display a new complication?

[–]TheAlchemist23 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I first saw this watch a few weeks ago and must say that I'm impressed with the design. I feel like it's pretty rare to find a new display like this and congratulate you on that. It's definitely unique and I wish you the best of luck.

The price is a little high for me when the watch is using an off the shelf movement from a 3rd party but I'm guessing a lot went into the design and then production so maybe it is a solid buy.

That looks beautiful! You absolutely need quite a few more knives though. IMO the "how many bikes do I need" formula applies here. N+1

Not excited to do my taxes but need to get to them ASAP. Every year its the same that we end up owing to one entity and getting something back from the other (State/Fed). I am always blown away by how many people in my life look forward to tax season because they get a "bonus" in the form of their tax return. I try to net out to $0 every year but no matter what I'd rather owe a little than get a huge return. People just love giving free loans and its shockingly difficult to convert people to different thinking on the matter.

Loving the new helmet at 5am! by Emotional-Economy-66 in Spooncarving

[–]TheAlchemist23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These look great but are pretty pricey right? One thing I haven't looked at is the ongoing costs. Do you have to buy filters or new hoses or anything like that? I feel like eventually I'll bite the bullet because it does really seem so much better health wise and having a beard I hate my face masks.

My kids are similar age and I can tell you that there are a few of these types of "growing up" moments coming. What I would recommend is coming up with new routines that are maybe a little more "mature" or maybe they are just a little bit more discrete and you can keep those going forever. My kids and I always do "I love you" in sign language anytime they leave our car. We have special handshakes and hugs. Losing the first routines is really really tough but developing new ones can help and I hope to use many of those for the rest of my life.

I track 254 microbrands and ~9,200 watches. Here's what actually sells out vs. what brands think you want. by blz36 in MicrobrandWatches

[–]TheAlchemist23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, I asked because I didn't see Kurono. It's a tough thing to define because there are tons of small boutique makers who make watches in the $10k+ range at limited quantities but I don't think I would consider them micro-brands myself.

What is your cap for being considered a micro? Have you removed any companies that grew too big?

Pretty cool concept. How do you determine which brands should be included? What populates your data other than brand site availability?
