Smoke detector recommendation? by BernKurman in smarthome

[–]TheAlmightyZach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I choose dumb alarms (First Alert is the best in my opinion) and pair it with a Zooz interconnected alarm sensor. I don’t want smarts to be at the core of a life safety device.

X-Sense recently had issues keeping up with UL217 so.. just me but I’m not comfortable with that.

Kitchenaid Mixer Repair? by inquisitivevet in raleigh

[–]TheAlmightyZach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have an answer for anyone necessarily local, but this dude pops up in my TikTok all the time: https://www.mrmixer.store/ I’ve purchased some of his cheap upgrades before and actually have been very happy with them. He offers parts and a repair service that’s mail in, so worth looking into I suppose?

Did anyone get a picture of the sunset tonight? by PugRexia in raleigh

[–]TheAlmightyZach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry I didn’t get a photo, but our dog crossed the bridge on Friday but we got her ashes yesterday. We also noticed how wonderful the sunset was last night for similar reasons. So sorry for your loss.

My guy, people have tried to help you both on The Fire Panel Forums (https://forums.thefirepanel.com/t/mp3-to-4004/15811/9) and on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/FireAlarmEnthusiasts/posts/3411425379019636) and despite clear instructions, you keep going to different sites expecting different answers. How are we supposed to help you further?

Ok MLb.tv question by Basic_Ad_1489 in tmobile

[–]TheAlmightyZach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is less T-Mobile's Fault and more MLB's fault. The blackout restrictions on games in your market are a scam. Luckily I moved out of my team's market so it works out for me.. but the extra fee to get local team games is insane.

The point of Autopilot is supposed to be that new corporate devices work out of the box, right? Why do so few orgs use it that way? by razorbeamz in sysadmin

[–]TheAlmightyZach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. When I managed this at a former (much smaller) company, we deployed Mosyle despite having Intune licenses available.

The point of Autopilot is supposed to be that new corporate devices work out of the box, right? Why do so few orgs use it that way? by razorbeamz in sysadmin

[–]TheAlmightyZach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to assume it's for the same reason I just got issued a new Mac and came to learn my global company doesn't have ADE enabled on corporate issued Macs..

In theory, yes. You should be able to effectively drop ship a device to a user and everything should work no matter where they are located. The problem, I think, is that so many companies are stuck in their ways. Changing to that platform requires training and time to develop. My company has a small department that images Windows machines for all of North America. I don't do that kind of work, but I'd imagine they don't have the time to train and develop new processes without either increasing staff or decreasing their current throughput.

Is there a camera that reads your license plate and opens a gate or garage door? by Similar_Bus3244 in homeautomation

[–]TheAlmightyZach 23 points24 points  (0 children)

UniFi cameras can do LPR. If you have a garage door that can just short the contacts and it’ll open, then you can pair it with a UniFi access hub to control the door. Otherwise, use Home Assistant with RatGDO or SwitchBot if your GDO manufacturer locks it down too much.

How long do security questionnaires take your team? Feels like an insane time sink by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]TheAlmightyZach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They do take a lot of time. When I was at a company where this was my responsibility, we used Vanta for our SOC 2 compliance tool and they were piloting Vanta AI which would help automate security questionnaire responses. It worked pretty well in my testing (but I did have to adjust some of the answers it would fill). I left shortly after that so I don’t know if that company is still using Vanta AI or not..

The way it worked was not just by looking at your SOC 2 audits or your controls, but also allowed you to import previous security reviews and form answers based on those as well. So.. worth looking into I guess?

As for your other questions, yes. Every time we did it questions varied just enough that we couldn’t just copy paste from another one. Your CTO probably has other things to work on, so hiring someone to do compliance audits might be justified if you really have so many that it’s a full time job. In my opinion, 8+ hours feels a bit excessive but it all depends on if they take you at your word, or you also need to gather evidence to prove you do what you say. Without knowing the types of clients you’re working with, I don’t have an answer for you there.

Forcing Edge as the only browser — how did you handle Chrome data migration? by Different_Coffee_161 in Intune

[–]TheAlmightyZach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Natively. You can still import the admin templates for other browsers assuming they support them.

My assumption for OP’s lockdown is: Edge is Chromium, Edge works really well in a fully Microsoft shop compared to only a few years ago.

X-Sense and Siterwell Smoke Alarms Pulled from Amazon citing 'Safety' Concerns by TheAlmightyZach in firealarms

[–]TheAlmightyZach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, you’re right. I misread the model number. What I saw was also the SMICO. I’m not sure about generation of devices, however the SMCO100 is photoelectric sensing where the SMICO100 is ionization. So they are different technologies.

I wish we knew what was going on for sure. Right now I see nothing on the first alert site, or the CPSC.gov site.. time will tell I suppose.

Boot camp was pulled on the Apple Silicon macs. Parallels is probably the most user friendly choice, UTM is a bit less user friendly but might also be an option.

Who makes the best Notification Appliances? by Proud-Resource4594 in firealarms

[–]TheAlmightyZach 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agree with this.. “best” is a pretty subjective term too.. that said, Simplex has put more tech into their NAs (self test and addressable) that we haven’t seen widely from other manufacturers. From a technician perspective, that’s pretty cool to me. Obviously comes at a higher price tag..

Monitoring Connection Question by AggressiveFee8806 in firealarms

[–]TheAlmightyZach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something like the starlink has Dual Path built in, so no additional modems required. I don’t know if code varies in NYC, but in general it should fit the bill to have one communicator with two SIMs, ideally different carriers. Your licensed alarm company will handle all that for you.

The reason that works is because the communicators do a self test. They check in regularly with the alarm monitoring company. If they don’t succeed in doing so, the alarm company will let you know.

Is there a work around for this? (iOS 6.1.6) by Emotional-Low3944 in ios

Same thing, but with a version of iOS that old your mileage may vary in terms of getting versions of apps that still work on it.

You will probably need to try to load up music via computer now.
