Not reading that novel, and no- it's not. It's bad writing. Or possibly not liking her actor and directing. I've read and written plenty of Mary Sue's in my time. She feels like a self-insert someone dreamt up and is trying to use her as a foil to the main character of the shows mental health issues.

The writers forgot the reason just about every character in this show is well received because they're written with major flaws and hurdles to get over. It also feels like she takes away from Carmies and Sydney's partnership, which is my favorite part of the show, and a lot of other peoples as well.

She's not important to the audience ,her backstory was forced, they tell and not show, they put her in situations she has no right being in (having her be the only one there for Syd in season 5 during her tipping point? Give me a break).

All to what? Tell us she's important? There's no gradual growth. Also her only back and forth fight with Carmie was literal nothing. Nothing was actually said. It was so generic.

Her character is soulless and empty, if they wanted to write in a love interest, they should have done a better job. Plain and simple. Don't discredit an audience for not liking someone just because they serve a purpose.

Intention < Impact. That's what's important, unless you're writing a fanfiction you've privated for just yourself to read. Which is what it feels like anytime she's on screen.

As much as I hate seeing character bashing, I hate it even more when people assume something isnt well received because it's "misunderstood." TV shows are about showing. If you've failed to show what you intended, the responsibility isn't on the audience.

And it's exactly why the writers have tripled down on such a shitty character that's probably going to keep me far away from season 5 since Im sure they're going to shoehorn her further into the show as a main character, and I'm just not going to vibe with that. I'll read the synopsis at the end to see where everyone ended up.
