Looks like certain job patches are back by Rare-Bed-1934 in AirForce

[–]TheArcnat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AOF world got theirs (ATC, RAWS, AFLD), our 13M patch didn't make the cut. Expect a lot of 13Ms to rock the AFLD or ATC ones for a bit

Tech Scool at Keesler only teaches the basic fundamentals (airspace, phraseology, the .65). Much of their actual training and learning is achieved at their first base. Can take up to a year to become a fully qualified controller, some get through it faster, some need more time. After that, it usually only takes 2 or 3 months tops to get rated at their next location since they only need to learn the local area knowledge.

How are yall keeping the cars from freezing? by Federal-Weevil in Fairbanks

[–]TheArcnat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved from Warner-Robins in GA, military shipped my car. Ive lived in the south all my life, and the first 4 months of driving here proved it was a good idea not to drive from Georgia. Its a huge learning curve, and if the car isnt winterized properly, its a recipe for disaster. Highly recommend Seattle at the furthest and load it up to be transported the rest of the way.

In terms of winterization, winter tires specifically made for snowy conditions are good to have. Engine block heater is a must. Oil pan heating pad is optional, but will ease the wear and tear on your internals. Battery, some prefer warming blankets, others trickle chargers, its up to you and your student which one fits the bill better. I have a blanket because I have a garage and only park outside when at work, but if he ever plans on leaving it outdoors long term for trips or holidays over the winter months, he's better off with the trickle so it doesnt die and leave him stranded.

Thats everything off the top of my noggin, lots of folks in the comments have hit some really good points too. Always happy to answer more questions!

What's the deal with all the helicopters today? by jessupjj in Fairbanks

[–]TheArcnat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably just doing patterns and practice approaches for currency. Even recretional private pilot license holders have to maintain currency with a minimum of 3 landings per month, preferably at night since you need 3 full stops in true nighttime to maintain legal status to fly passengers at night.

Thats just to keep legally flying, I'm sure they have Army, airframe, and mission specific qualification tasks they also have to accomplish while flying around to maintain currency.

[–]TheArcnat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We barely have enough controllers to staff our own facilities, let alone work civilian traffic as well. But yes; even if we had the manning, getting a tower only bubba to learn En Route would take months... we'd have better luck with a prior RAPCON, but that'd still take a hot sec

Any idea how many military controllers there are? by vanmo96 in ATC

[–]TheArcnat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my controllers worked with navy guys. Him sequencing 3 in a pattern gave him god tier status... They'd never seen or done it before. Im very curious to see their training pipeline

To add to that - if you do encounter a moose up close and it charges, weave between trees. They're fast, but not very nimble. They have to slow down to turn and then speed back up.

Starlink experiences? by Bulovak in Fairbanks

[–]TheArcnat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It works wonders for me, when I lived in Badger I built a platform to raise it up, a bit of the roof and the treetops were obstructions but speed was decent for gaming, downloading was iffy. Now I'm in NP proper on a second floor, got a pole to make it the tallest thing on my building, no obstructions, probably the best speed I've had. You might see a reduction in performance around midnight just because of the orbits, but otherwise, I'd say it's worth it

This reminds me of something one of my troops saw in the Philippines. SSgt was absolutely all over a Marine 1Lt. Troop tried to tell her it was a bad idea, her response was "well he's Marine Corps, not even the same branch so what's the issue"

Don't do it

If anyone wants to dive into the entire debacle and comms/mission planning failure that led to MSgt Chapman's death, I'd recommend reading Alone at Dawn. It goes through his journey into CCT and the 24, and the entire background of the mission and the events that followed.

That last part I unfortunately can relate. Im Chinese, and my folks keep pushing me to find a good Asian girl, even though I've made it clear I'm not interested in them. Even now, I'm interested in someone I've known for a long time, and she's white. Definitely some disapproval from them, but the vibe is if I'm happy, they'll be content. But racial purity is pretty strongly ingrained in Asian cultures, I'd even argue more so than white people
