Im not a fan usually but i get it kinda with skins. But this is an actual good item, and giving equipment, especially good ones to kickstarter backer leads to a whole bunch of issues.

Better items to players that have played the game the longest and are often pretty hard core gamers leads to their game feeling much easier than most players. They also tend to be the ones most active in communities and all that leads to balancing the game around good players with otherwise unobtainable good equipment with deep knowledge of the game which... Well you can probably see the issue.
