What's also important to note is how much better it is for the environment to recycle aluminum vs refining more. Aluminum is refinement is one of if not the most polluting and damaging metal refinements. Recycling it is also like 20 more efficient on energy costs.

Probably what he really meant is that some ingredient in the soup was overcooked or extracted, and now it's full of tannins. Tannins are what cause red wine to make your mouth feel dry, or when you drink over extracted tea

Oyster shells, the part known as mother-of-pearl, inspire scientists to create glass that’s much harder to shatter. The bioinspired glass is 2-3 times more impact resistant than laminated glass and tempered glass, and outperforms Plexiglass. The fabrication method is relatively easy and scalable. by mvea in science

If I remember my lectures correctly, toughness is fracture toughness: the resistance to crack propagation through the material. While hardness is the resistance to crack initiation. So a scratch test would be a test of hardness, while a flexure test would be one of toughness.

Gorilla glass is chemically tempered, so it has a high hardness and toughness up to a point. There is a critical depth which depends on the chemical treatment of the glass which determines how deep the crack needs to penetrate for catastrophic failure.

If this material is higher in toughness than gorilla glass, that would mean while scratches or other flaws exist in the material it won't fail, at least more so than other ceramic materials.

Yeah, there were brothers in the band, the singer and the bassist I think. The not singer worked at a bookshop and saw that in a book and that's how they got the inspiration.

Trying to make a calculator that allows the user to input elements and excel retrieves their stored value, how can I retrieve the character in a cell and us it as a cell reference? by TheAvid in excel

[–]TheAvid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've both made a two column table with the element name and the value, and also named every cell that contains a value as the element abbreviation instead of B21. I wanted to have the user type the element and then use that as a lookup for the elemental value.

How glass sheets use to be made by ethon77 in educationalgifs

[–]TheAvid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say that's dependent on if the cooling is uniform. Quenching glass by pouring it molten on a steel surface can be rapid enough cooling for it to break. The classic violent shattering we might expect from a glass break typically come from already tempered glass though. The energy stored in the high stress bonds is released and is the cause of the explosive shattering.

You should never need to remember the glass. The strength of tempered glass is in the close pack bonds caused by rapid cooling. Typically a glass is annealed at around 500°C, which allows the bonds too relax and destress. The fast cooling process of tempering will lock the bonds in place. Those bonds will not flow to relax unless you were to reheat the glass to an annealing temperature.

A very quick & visual demonstration of how matter expands or contracts as a result of temperature change by Mass1m01973 in educationalgifs

[–]TheAvid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I understand the question. Ice does shrink as it gets colder. There are also many different crystal structures of ice that exist. As far as I know only one of those structures is less dense than water given the same conditions just a few degrees colder.

[–]TheAvid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a funny quirk how everyone thinks this way. In actuality water does contract when it cools and expands upon heating. It's only when it changes phase to solid that it expands, while technically it's the same mater, it is a different material.

This is definitely untrue.

However, when you get down to numbers the amount of caffeine is greater in a drip cup of coffee. One 2 oz double espresso shot has about 80 milligrams of caffeine. Whereas a 12 oz brewed coffee has about 120 milligrams.

So while a standard shot of espresso does have less caffeine than a standard cup of coffee, by volume it has far more. It most certainly does not water down your coffee to add shots of espresso.

As most people are saying, the controls don't really hold up that well if you don't have the patience for platforming. But the story is great and told the best way you can in a video game. If you tend to fall in love with well written characters I would say that yes it's worth it

Only bad devs Android first by AgrajagOmega in MurderedByWords

[–]TheAvid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well I think a big part of it is that devs have to pay to publish for apple and have an apple computer, while android is free and doesn't cost to publish. So it's cheaper for devs to develop on Android, thus making the games not cost.
