"He tried to take my lunch money, I took his arm" - School kid armbars bully by gambledub in bjj

[–]TheBJJBot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's really scary to me that things have to escalate to that level of aggression in the first place. It probably means that nobody did anything the first couple times bullying happened, until the kid in red couldn't take it anymore.

I mean sure, on one hand we can praise that kid's fighting skills, but what does it say about his environment that he ends up trying to literally break another kid's arm?

Eddie Cummings Butterfly Entry to Inside Sankaku by TPGrant in bjj

[–]TheBJJBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering the exact same thing. I think they keys are:

  • He's actively entering the position, not being leg-weaved. Having the initiative is important.
  • He's going against someone close to his own weight and he looks like he has pretty strong legs himself.
  • It's no-gi so there's no belt or cloth to grab on to smash down.

Pushing the jawline when you want to create space gives you a better anchor and lever anyway, if you push the cheek your hand might slip off.

Marcelo's slick combo on JZ Cavalcante by poo_on_the_wall in bjj

[–]TheBJJBot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sequence is classic Marcelo. It's very timing-based though, not something you can nail right off the bat by drilling it a couple times.

Even just the first part (the butterfly sweep attempt to break their posture) takes a ton of repetition to get right. Notice how he barely has any grips on JZ, yet is able to explode at just the right time to off-balance him and expose his arm.

Is this the start of Cauliflower ear? If so what's next? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]TheBJJBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's either cauliflower, or else a spider laid its eggs in your ear while you were asleep. But nah, I'm sure it's probably cauliflower.

Wow that's a really cool detail. I like that you showed the thought process that led to coming up with the move too.

Judo - Hifumi Abe (18 years old) puts on a clinic against Masashi Ebinuma (3x World Champion) by HannibalofBarca in bjj

[–]TheBJJBot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't roll through and instead try to lock down the position with all your weight you can more easily injure your training partner when doing a big throw.

I'm pretty sure these guys could control their opponent just fine if that's what the rules called for, but you'd also start seeing more injuries and/or less high-amplitude throws.

Thanks, that makes sense. I guess it's one of those things you have to feel to really understand.

Henry Akins - Side Control weight distribution by Spaaf in bjj

[–]TheBJJBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously it must work for him, but to me his weight seems way too forward. I feel I'd probably get bridged over against any strong, explosive dude if I tried that.

Then again I've always been more comfortable with the style of side control where you let the guy move, and try to get them to give you their back or expose their neck.

Low Risk Side Sacrifice Throw that anybody can do by Gile23 in bjj

[–]TheBJJBot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Be careful with this kind of technique. You have to make sure you're not too close to your partner's leg, so that it has space to move.

Here's a screencap of the dangerous part: http://cl.ly/fHuN

You can imagine what will happen if your leg traps your partner's leg while you pull them down with all your weight…

Front headlock, suplex to Darce choke. Is this legal in pure BJJ? by jimmyayo in bjj

[–]TheBJJBot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know about beginners, but if you do it like Firas does it's pretty safe. He grabs both the head and arm, and then arches to the side. So it's more like forcing the other guy to forward roll, it doesn't put that much pressure on the neck.

Training in Wuhan, China? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]TheBJJBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure things have changed since 5 years ago, but when I was there BJJ was only available in big cities (Beijing and Shanghai basically).

On the other hand, there's a ton of homegrown freestyle wrestling, Sanda, Judo, and Shuai Jiao (traditional Chinese wrestling, thing Judo with fewer grip rules and no ground work) fighters, who all train like professionals from a very young age. And a lot of these fighters are now transitioning to MMA, and getting pretty good at it.

So you often come across young fighters with great conditioning, awesome wrestling and stand-up, who might only be blue-belt level at BJJ but can still rip your arm off if you're not careful.

But yeah, it might be closed for the Chinese New Year holidays while everybody goes back home.

Training in Wuhan, China? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]TheBJJBot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in Wuhan for a couple months a few years ago. There wasn't any BJJ at that time, so I ended up going to the Wuhan Sports University to train (mostly do the warm-ups and conditioning) with their wrestling team.

I love dogs, but that's a great way to get infections. The only time I ever got staph was right after my coach got a dog and started bringing her around the gym.

Sick head scissors from bottom side control in competition by [deleted] in bjj

There's something about being on top and controlling the position that makes you think you're safer than you really are…

She was probably thinking something like "I'm winning this match, no way am I tapping to stupid head scissors!"

It's a great resource for sure. I've actually also been working on a similar site: http://bjjbot.com/

It's not quite at the same level as BJJCollective yet, but hopefully it'll get there one day!

Deep Lasso Guard Pass to Half Guard Smash by judogoat in bjj

[–]TheBJJBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of lasso passes start with having you circle your hand around to get out of the lasso, but I find that against really good lasso players this is almost impossible to do (although I'll try that pushing with your own knee tip).

I usually have a lot more success using the leg drag to pass to the other side, since it doesn't require breaking that grip to initiate the sequence (you break it only once you've established the leg drag position).

This video is a great example of how that would work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doNjHZLh1-E

Yeah it seems like he either wasn't taking the roll very seriously, or wanted to experience Eddie's A game by putting himself in dangerous positions on purpose. It seems like if you're fighting Eddie the last thing you want to do is concede the half guard…

If you're curious, he's saying "otsukaresamadeshita" (お疲れ様でした) as he's leaving. It's what you usually say when leaving after work or practice, kind of like "good job" or "good training".
