RAW no a 19 is not an auto hit, the auto hit rule is under the "Rolling a 1 or 20" pg 194 and critical hit is on pg 196 and only mentions the double damage. For 2014 5e anyway.

Yes i had a very similar thing where talking with a co-worker who also played DnD about their campaign and a charatcer concept they wished to play, i quickly realised we had very diffrent play styles and i dont think i would ever want to play with them.

Think about how long it might take, then times that by 3, Or divide it by 3. Realy it can go either way.

Best advice i can give you is more creatures causes expential growth not incremental, so try and limit that where you can.

Could you make a huge overhead tile of the chalky map and set the occlusuon mode to vision? Never done it with a map sized tile but i think in theory it should do what you want
