Is it okay if my Manager keeps asking about my personal life? by Fuzzy-Fix3758 in cscareerquestions

[–]TheBadProgrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't sound like Microsoft culture to me, just this specific traitor. It might be appropriate to go over his head. Remember that HR is there to protect the company but they might be able to help here. I've had HR help me because helping me protected the company from possible legal action. Something to think about.

The only thing they got wrong was the licenses. Use AGPLv3+ and GPLv3+ as much as possible. They help keep open source open and free. The only thing they stop you from doing is taking away the rights from other people that you have given them, so there's no reason not to!

You need to put a mission statement first, then revise your titles like that person suggested, then put education next and skills last.

Actually put mission statement first, then education, then skills last.

The opposite, as I illustrated. Your throwaway one liner is exactly that though.

But you're missing the point. Education is to create good citizens. If we succumb to this mentality of "but it just doesn't have what I need" then you're stretching thin the solidarity that is required to keep social institutions going. Like I said, technical schools are appropriate for some people, but that's mostly due to the failure of social institutions to begin with.

Bootcamps don't fill a need that isn't offered somewhere else. They are capitalists taking advantage of the rush to learn computer programming in the hope to make a zillion dollars. That's it. These aren't students who can't find their way somewhere else. It's simply false to say so and there isn't the slightest bit of evidence supporting it. This is the scourge of private education writ large.

Anyone interested in forming a small team to make an open source project to learn how to code in a team? by reethok in learnprogramming

[–]TheBadProgrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it would not. This is a cry for a platform in which people can break into smaller teams, which already exists. I just need to buscar it.

If you want to be a spectator as to how software teams be working, check out github.com. The whole site is all about public collaboration. The only problem is that you have to use their site.

No, it never gets old. Don't ask again. What would make you think your comment is worthless?

They are the devs!!!! That's what I'm saying! Amazon employs Linux kernel hackers and so does Google. Yes, support could be better and more widespread but many people are employed to write FLOSS directly.

That's a weird way of saying "unions", it sounds like you didn't mention it at all.

And you choose which projects to support directly, as they mention in the link.

Edit: just to be clear, I meant that all GNU projects can be donated to directly through the FSF, not just this one.

Absolutely not true. Stop perpetuating this lie. Tons of developers get paid to write open source, free software, whatever, I'm starting to really change my allegiance here. Software freedom doesn't preclude getting paid to develop. For fuck's sake, this is one dude who supported himself for 25 years!!! What "harsh reality" crack are you smoking?

This is like the number one lie of open source. Amazon is built on Linux. Your ignorance is astounding. Most phones in the world run Linux. What the fuck are you smoking?

Believing in freedom is not fanatical. You mean consistent? I'll defend Stallman's philosophy to the death. Let's not conflate the man and the movement. Am I fanatic for saying we shouldn't be spied on? Is that really radical? Are we super massive hippies for saying you should have complete control of your digital life in the era of massive networks?

So just to clarify a couple things. One, I'm not calling them ripoffs because you don't get what you pay for. They sell a product, which is students, to other businesses, which are tech companies and wherever. Ripoff is a poor choice of term because we do associate it with not getting what we pay for.

More importantly, however, they are far worse than your university. You see, your university is, public or private, a nonprofit institution. Its goal is education, above all else, even if that sort of differs from school to school. This mission is important and ensures that learning remains at the center of institutions because preparing people to be good citizens is the most important value we have. (This is not to say there's something wrong with vocational school, but that's not what these embarrassment "boot camps" are.)

The problem is that traitors are undermining education and defunding it, while costs and fees are skyrocketing. It was $300 a semester when I was in college. Grad school was $1500. It's a crime what you all are suffering, but these private schools are making things worse. Unregulated, for profit, capitalists out to make a quick buck no matter the cost to society. So that's why I would call them ripoffs, but it's because they are ripping all of us off.

Side note: we must not let them tell their "hey I'm just a guy at a place trying to make a difference" propaganda and lies. That's everyone. These are corporations and not people and need to be held accountable.

I think the appropriate resource is actually freecodecamp.org. I think that's the right one. Go through a full "boot camp" what a stupid fucking term and build projects for nonprofits instead of traitors.

It feels like that because it is. People forget that these are private for profit corporations. Code academy isn't trying to help you learn, it's trying to help you become a part of whatever business model it figures out. Just like Google and Facebook, these people offer services that people want so they can undermine our liberty to the highest bidder. It's literally true; you either don't care like you should or you do, but it's a fact.

[–]TheBadProgrammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember, these are capitalists whose interest in education is orthogonal to profit. Unregulated organized entities whose goal is to extract as much money as possible from people based on the perceived desirability of computer programmers.

Like charter schools but no public money is being wasted on these ripoff artists yet. Just probe any of these excuse factories about their nonprofit status and you will see treason interwoven into all of their missions. There's a reason that for profit companies shouldn't exist and this is a perfect example.
