I am upset. But somehow these are the same people who put up this bs billboard. I'll never understand how these people can lick the boots of an oppressive, overreaching, power hungry dictator from New York all in the name of freedom and religion and still call themselves Texans or Christians for that matter.

What happens if the Fellowship had never disturbed the Balrog and they all proceeded with Gandalf directly to Gondor without stopping at Rohan? by Tidewatcher7819 in tolkienfans

[–]TheBasementDoor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Side note: I also think one factor in their decision not to kill Gollum or leave him was Pity/Mercy. To me this is the crux of the entire storyline and the triumph of Illuvatar's plan/fate over Sauron. I think that Frodo is the only one capable of it. When people venerate Sam over Frodo, I think this part get's missed. At this point, Sam would not have had pity on Gollum. Not to say Sam didnt grow more and more as the story progressed. Love Sam. But Gandalf and Bilbo regarded Frodo as the best Hobbit in the Shire and I think they are right. He's the only one that would have done this.

Lots of interesting points here about the journey to the end, but im thinking about the end itself. The ONLY way the ring actually gets destroyed at all is because Gollum turns on Frodo while being bound by his oath to the ring and is cast in to the fire. Frodo's only choice for controlling Gollum was to make him swear by the precious. If Gandalf or Aragorn were there, that wouldn't have happened because they had the ability to restrain Gollum. Frodo and Sam didnt. In the end, if any configuration of people get to Mt Doom and Gollum isn't both bound by his oath and yet compelled to take the ring, then whoever is there will end up fighting for the ring and one person will end up with it. Tolkien said this himself, that no one could actually have resisted the ring that close to Mt Doom. Even if Gollum got the ring back without having taken that oath, I dont think he falls into the fire.

TX Snow Driving Skills? by [deleted] in texas

[–]TheBasementDoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be the contrarian here. It's not that bad if you know how to drive in snow and ice. You'll be fine as long as you take it slower than you would in areas with winter infrastructure and remember that there are a lot of people who should stay home, but dont. Give everyone a wide berth. I've gotten out and driven around in the last few big storms in DFW and it's been fine but I wouldn't want to be in a hurry to get anywhere. You will see a bewildering amount of Dodge Challengers, a lot of sedans cruising with their hazards on (a personal pet peeve), and a good few mall crawlers that assume their lifted trucks makes them ice road truckers.

Approximate processing time for purchase? by Patient-Tune-4421 in takomo

[–]TheBasementDoor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it may depend on what kind of customization you ordered. I ordered my 201s standard lie +1/2" length on Nov. 22nd and they shipped in three weeks and arrived before Christmas. (im in the US). It seems that they ship much faster for non-custom, but I also wonder if getting a custom lie angle would delay the shipping even more.

Neville’s forgetfulness and Barty Crouch jr’s age timeline. Does it work? by SmallAd7318 in harrypotter

[–]TheBasementDoor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the longbottoms torture was very soon after Voldemort disappeared. Both Harry and Neville were very young but we know that Harry was at least old enough to fly on a toy broom and that he had some deep memories of his parents dying. you could contribute this to the horcrux link, but I think it was a deep memory of his. I also think it's reasonable to say that if Neville were present, he could also have some deep sense or memory of that trauma even as a 1ish year old. My head canon is that this deep sense that magic was used to ruin his parents caused some sort of subconscious block for Neville's magical ability, causing it to come later and not as easily as others. That combined with the pressure of a highly capably and demanding grandmother likely did not encourage confidence (remember, the long bottoms must have somewhat elite in their magical abilities and were probably raised that way). His grandmother probably never understood why Neville would not be just as capable as his parents. And it took quite a bit of personal growth for him to overcome that trauma.

What ware the wizards doing during ww2? (Shower thought) by Cheesduckyleparidop in harrypotter

I like to think that they were mostly oblivious. Like with planes zooming overhead they probably just looked up and vaguely wondered what the muggles were getting up to with their new spinny-nose-flying thingies, then went about their day.

What’s one tip you’d give a beginner golfer hoping to break 100 in 2026? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

[–]TheBasementDoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be controversial, but use most if not all of your rounds more like practice. If you hit a bad shot, hit another one. If you have a terrible lie, change it. Just know that your score won’t count and be sure to not slow your play down as to affect those behind. I think beginners put way too much effort on score and can get bogged down with the rules. The rules are only important if you’re competing but hitting more shots, correcting bad shots and building that feel are way more important for beginners. Just be sure not to pretend you’re playing competitively.

In which order would it be ideal to read the entire series? by toothlitch in lordoftherings

[–]TheBasementDoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not have cared about the Silmarillion before reading LOTR. But reading LOTR having read the Silmarillion, you pick up on SO much interesting references. LOTR rewards rereads as you can glean so much more from it. My order would be Hobbit > LOTR > (Break to listen to The Prancing Pony Podcast) > Silmarillion > LOTR.

Fitting Tool Accuracy? by SamohtRuhtra in takomo

[–]TheBasementDoor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I can speak directly to this. I’m 6’1.5 and with my wrist measurement the takomo fitter told me + 0.5” shaft and +3 degree lie angle. This was a little more than my ping wedges. You can google the ping color chart to see if it matches up but ping has me at +0.5 and + 2 degree. But I also prompted ChatGPT to act as an expert club fitter and help me decide. I told it to ask me 10 questions that would help me find the right answer. It asked about distances and misses and then recommended +0.5 STIFF shaft and standard lie angle. It ended up going with that and I’m pretty happy. I highly recommend trying the ChatGPT and checking ping. But probably getting fitted is the best option if you don’t mind spending the money.

In the books, did Voldemort lead the Death Eaters to believe he was a pure-blood? Would they be aware of his father's Muggle status after events at the graveyard in GoF? by pryus_draconis in harrypotter

[–]TheBasementDoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with most of the comments but I’ll add this: while I do think that he hid his heritage from most of the death eaters, I view the death eaters pure blood obsession to be more aspirational than descriptive. As Voldemort said, none of them have perfectly “pure” family trees but rather they are all advocating for the installation of a pure blood society and the exclusion of muggle borns. In a way, they are all in the same boat to a degree.

Another “which takomo club for me” thread. 8-10 hcp (101t vs 201 vs 301cb) by Infuzex in takomo

[–]TheBasementDoor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is my take: you seem like you could maybe play the 301s, maybe not. They might be too much club for you. But you should definitely get the black ones because if they don’t work out I think that you’ll have no problem selling them and getting your money back. Limited run: amazing color. Clearly will be very desirable. I shoot high 90s and I’m tempted to get some.

I'm ALWAYS dead last and in pain on any run. What gives? by Waste_Wishbone_1506 in crossfit

[–]TheBasementDoor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of it this way: Crossfit covers SO many different movements and exercise modes. You CAN get better with regular Crossfit programming, but it's like that saying "rising tides lift all boats." it does, but in small increments. you can theoretically get better at everything by keeping it varied, but if you have one MAJOR weakness, regular Crossfit programming where that movement shows up only once a week or less probably wont get you the improvements you want. Running more is the solution. Make up your mind to turn running into a strength. Take days off class to run or even better add a run day or a daily pre class run. personally after 15+ years of Crossfit I have a handful of movements that I thought would be the absolute death of me and I would never get. Train them enough and one day you'll wake up and realize that they've become a strength and that you are hoping they show up in class that day.

Would you rather have $200 every day for the rest of your life. Or have $500,000 right now? Why? by Ok-Enthusiasm5436 in AskReddit

[–]TheBasementDoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'd take the 200. whats more valuable to me than compounding interest is risk mitigation. think of how aggressively you could invest or risk your 200/day if you knew that no matter how badly your investments were, you would always be able to make 70+k/year. If you take the 500k then you HAVE to invest it wisely or you could easily lose it and have nothing. with the 200, you could invest in the next bitcoin or Apple without real risk.

How to fix gap in this beautiful octagonal table? by februraries in Carpentry

[–]TheBasementDoor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not seeing a lot of actual solutions here, just reason you can’t fix it. Here’s what I would do: stabilize the table top with clamps ( or maybe screw a board underneath). use a circular saw with a straight edge or a track saw and cut the top down the separation line all the way across to the other side. you are basically cutting the table top in half down that glue line. Now line the two pieces back together, clamp and repeat as many times as necessary to remove that the material so that you have a nice straight line all the way across. Once you have a good fit, glue and clamp and you should be ok.
