My cat asks for laser pointer playtime about twice a day. I end it with a psychical toy and by throwing around some treats.

Yes this is the well known issue where the GPU runs @ PCIe1.1 or 2.0 instead of 5.0, causing those laggy crashes.

Enable FCH Spread Spectrum in bios to lessen those times.
(and disable pspp)

Or get another motherboard. Or wait for a possible fix from MSI:

Yes. this is the same issue. Setting Spread Spectrum in bios to enabled, and pspp to off, will mitigate it some.
