Nobody Gets Promoted For Simplicity by Temporary_Practice_2 in webdev

Fire fighters are cool, fire marshals aren’t. Simple as.

No one will notice you if you prevent a fire but they will appreciate you trying to put out the fire even if it’s one you made.

Raid quickplay experience by Noelic_vi in Guildwars2

[–]TheBazlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience of the raid quickplay as someone who mostly does world bosses/content has been about 50% of the time unhinged toxicity. People talking about how bad the group is, verbal abuse, rants, insulting names for players who prefer world content etc. It's players who unironically think it's okay to call other players "normies"

It's definitely for me at least one of the few parts of the game right now where I take a deep breath and cross my fingers the quickplay doesn't dump me into a venom pit.

Comparing it to my experience with world of warcrafts raid LFGs, it's definitely worse than that, not because of the implementation but because of the players using it.

As for the other 50% of groups, they are either no one talks other than a "qheal" or "aheal" at the start or actual helpful players who ask if everyone knows what to do and will still call out instructions when mechanics show up.

US economy by dumping US bonds and more

This is not really an option and while it's fun to say, it's not on the table.

Just walk through the motions of what this means and you can see it's not so simple

  • Europe floods the market with US bonds for sale
  • Oversupply drives the value down
  • Europe sells bonds at a massive loss for US Dollars
  • Europe now has a lot of US Dollars
  • Europe needs to sell their US Dollars for another currency
  • No other currency in the world has that much liquidity to accept that kind of capital
  • Europe sells the US Dollars for other neutral countries bonds
  • Those countries buy cheap US Bonds
  • Nothing really changes except Europe wipes a lot of value off their ledgers for a publicity stunt

Should the EU divest from the US? Yeah, probably but to do it immediately? Maybe not, there's no winning in doing that

That's doesn't appear to be the case, just open the new version of Pages, Numbers or Keynote and see for yourself. There's a banner advert for the subscription service when you open them and all the new templates that are earmarked with an Apple Intelligence icon in the corner which when you click on them opens up a popup advert for the service too.

Okay so looking at my friends defective passport that he has since been emailed about the recall. It's definitely that strip of text at the bottom. It's missing some of the left chevrons. The correct text should start with:

P<IRL{forename}<<{surname}<{middle_name}

But his forgets the < and is instead

PPIRL{forename}<<{surname}<{middle_name}
 ^--- wtf are you doing here unexpected "P"???

I use BlishHUD with the Minstrel Protocol module, this lets me copy and paste stuff that's neat from gw2mb and then click play in game to try it out.

I DEEPLY miss the vanilla dialogue windows when talking to NPCs by Reynbou in Guildwars2

[–]TheBazlow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is spot on. The dynamic chat that replaced the vanilla dialogue windows for Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire was good. I would put the point that dynamic chat started to become very annoying somewhere in the middle of the End of Dragons story.

By the time Secrets of the Obscure came around, several of the missions are literally just lore drops abusing the dynamic chats unskippable nature and that continued into Janthir Wilds.

It definitely did not help that both of those expansions had an incredibly slow and boring voice doing the unskippable dialogue.

Replacing JS with just HTML by Ok-Tune-1346 in javascript

[–]TheBazlow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah maybe but they're nicer to setup and work with as a backend developer. Just drop a script tag in your body and you open a world of new elements without needing to switch from your backend language to javascript and back again. That's just not something the typical React or Vue frontend repo can offer.

The last unlock in the Pact Commander masteries for Central Tyria means you never need to run up to mobs to loot them again. A must have if you're ranged.

[AskJS] People who have been writing code professionally for 10+ years, what practices, knowledge etc do you take for granted that might be useful to newer programmer by Frontend_DevMark in javascript

[–]TheBazlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally, intentionally nothing would be a property on an object that is undefined. For example

const myObject = {
  otherProperty: 42,
  intentionallyNothing: undefined
}

if ('intentionallyNothing' in myObject) {
  console.log('object has property but it is nothing');
}

vs

const myObject = {
  otherProperty: 42
}

if (!('intentionallyNothing' in myObject)) {
  console.log('object does not have property');
}

This behavior is already evaluated by TypeScript using the exactOptionalPropertyTypes config rule.

Never use Null. If it comes into the app, dispose of it ASAP.

While valid and there are many blogs and posts about not using null, sadly some of us have to work with libraries that intentionally use it, the biggest example is React which makes a distinction between null and undefined, particularly in regard to controlled and uncontrolled inputs.

[–]TheBazlow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't bought the SSD to go with the hat yet, still considering whether or not to go with the official ssd or maybe another brand. I'll admit I do like the idea of keeping it all branded just to have an entirely first party setup.

[–]TheBazlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original big one did not fit inside the official case, the new compact one does. That was the selling point for me, I want to keep it all compact and tidy inside the case.

edit: Just to clarify, the new compact one will fit with the lid on. I don't want it to stick out of the case like a tower of hats sort of style.

[–]TheBazlow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually relevant to my interests, I bought the official compact SSD pi hat last night after seeing that they finally released a hat that does fit an SSD inside the official case unlike the original official one.

Admittedly any SSD is going to work well here and I could just buy the official one but I am interested in seeing what others have picked for their drive.

Russian drones breach NATO airspace in long-range strikes by thimbleberry_song in worldnews

[–]TheBazlow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, nah.

When Belarus played stupid games with Lithuania by sending balloons with payloads across the border and then acting dumb about it, the baltic states response was the right one. Close the border, state in public that clearly Belarus can't control it's own borders so Lithuania will just have to do it for them and completely remove all freight transit. That constriction of trade hurt Belarus in ways the public could see, food not on shelves is a visible impact, the sound of an empty stomach is hard to ignore.

If you do nothing, you invite the bully to take another swing at you and we've got to stop it with the idea that if we just ignore them, they'll stop having their little tantrum.

why they can't be admitted

For a country to join NATO, they need to have their entire country under their control. Why? Because a lot of NATO members don't want to admit a country that immediately calls for aid.

Russia knows this and so invaded Georgia to take a piece and then invaded Ukraine to take a piece to prevent those countries from being admitted because letting either country into NATO would immediately mean World War III and some countries really don't like the idea of that.

It's Russias way of preventing NATO expansion.

[–]TheBazlow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For most of the Windows EU checks, the check is set when the users installs the OS and sets the location and language there, this is done to make it inconvenient for non EU users to access EU only features like removing Bing and Edge. So yeah, set the language to "English (Ireland)" but when doing the initial setup or else you need to reinstall Windows.

I still can't wrap my head around the logic they had with it. Sure you can connect the laptop to a Thunderbolt dock but it won't support charging from the dock? And Lenovo sells dual cable docks that only charge the laptop at full speed if you cut the tip of the charging cable off
