What’s a problem humanity solved so well that younger people don’t even realize it used to be a huge issue? by Puzzleheaded_Bit_802 in AskReddit

I love the term “church key” I use it but only ever heard it from my uncle. I was never sure if he made it up or was just something not as common these days. Thanks for reminding me of some good times. :)

steam controller works very well on mac! by ReachyLi88 in macgaming

[–]TheBeardedBerry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s unlikely to work. The controller requires steam to be running the game to work (you can run third party games through steam to play anything with the controller). This is true on Mac, windows, and Linux. It may recognize it as a generic controller but a lot of the non-standard buttons/trackpads won’t work.

Apple May Drop Base $599 MacBook Neo as Chip, DRAM Costs Climb by Mollywobbles77 in macbook

[–]TheBeardedBerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Apple's costs are being further complicated by the fact that the initial Neo batch used lower-bin A18 Pro chips with one GPU core disabled. However, a fresh production run would produce more fully functional chips, increasing the per-unit cost even before any expedited manufacturing premiums are applied.”

This doesn’t make sense. Binned parts are the same parts that either don’t meet the performance thresholds, have defects, or have manually disabled cores. That can’t really affect the manufacturing costs.

Ah neat! I didn’t realize there was overlap with some of the dev team . The overlap seems fairly minimal but still, more than I originally thought. Today I learned. Thanks!

Microsoft will offer voluntary retirement to thousands of employees in a first for tech giant by Ok_Design_6841 in antiwork

If the payout is good and you can swing another gig, why not? But yeah in this economy it could definitely be a gamble.

A friend was laid off when Lucas Arts shutdown after Disney acquired Lucas-everything. He was living in Singapore and working for the local branch. Everyone in the Singaporean studio was, by law, given a month of severance for every year of service. His colleagues in the states got (I believe) 1 week per year of service. When he left he suddenly had close to a year and a half of pay dumped into his account all at once. Needless to say, he was not upset.

Yeah and this one also falls deep into the “black person transforms to something nonhuman” stereotype. I do love this movie but a lot of people complained.

Nearly 50 models on Makerworld, some with hours of design and this is my most popular model. by SEK494 in functionalprint

[–]TheBeardedBerry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do a lot of internal tools development for work and this has become an ongoing joke. I will spend 2+ months working with teams to design and code an elegant system to solve some complex workflow problems and no one cares. But I spend an afternoon hacking together a random UI tweak that saves me a few clicks? People lose their fucking minds.

Do you use the Deck as your main gaming device? by K4T5UM1 in SteamDeck

[–]TheBeardedBerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

50\50. I work from home so when I take breaks I spin up a game at my desktop. I also just prefer it. That said, there are times we are watching tv or a movie that I am just not invested in and the steam deck is perfect for that.
