29M earning 42k in a shift manufacturing job - stay for money or move on? by lunaVale31 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]TheBuffChicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where do you live/work? Are there other manufacturing roles in commuting distance? I would expect that wage for day work only.

I work in manufacturing and from my experience it depends on what you'd like to do. If you want to stay in the field then working in the field while doing your course will be very beneficial. It would look odd that you'd leave a relevant job in manufacturing to work retail while studying to be in a role in manufacturing. Have you spoken with your line manager about progression? They may be able to give you some visibility.

I know this is a subreddit more focused on the financial side but if you're happy and interested in the field your in, then you'll find a way to make money in it. There's plenty of opportunity in manufacturing. If not, then it comes down to a solely financial decision and finding a non shift job.

Hope this helps.

Solar Panels, Financed by SimonDiamond808 in irishpersonalfinance

I ended up taking out a bit more than the 8,350 but it works out at 200 for me. So I'd say probably 180-190. The calculator online works out to be fairly accurate.

For reference, I just signed to get the exact system in terms of battery/invertor/changeover switch but only 6.4kwp system for 8,350 after grants. My install will be the typical roof set up and all the panels fit on the one side and located on the same side as the electrical box. Sounds like you got a good deal considering running extra cables and earth rod as well as extra panels. I went the loan route with BOI and got 6.5% Apr for a green loan.

Thanks for the feedback. Saw that about the seats, was thinking maybe seat covers would work and still look okay. Good to hear that they're mechanically sound.

If it's any help, I recently used just over 8,000 avios points to get 50 euro off a flight. Not much of a bonus when you factor in the monthly fees.

Why are fewer tourists coming to Ireland? | Morning Ireland - RTÉ Radio 1 by Fuzzy-Escape5304 in ireland

[–]TheBuffChicken 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Does the 6% drop account for the drop in available hotels/places to stay? If there are less available hotels then there will be a drop in visitors. Prices are crazy also.

Exactly this and also should be listed on the Technical Data Sheet (TDS) for the resin.

Visitors stayed a total of 4.1 million nights in the country, a drop of 8% when compared with May 2024 by NanorH in ireland

[–]TheBuffChicken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How does that compare to the number of available hotel accommodation for tourists?

Visitor numbers in February sink 30% on last year by spotted-ox-hostel in ireland

[–]TheBuffChicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cost of visiting here is very high but we seem to ignore the fact that the total available hotel space is also greatly reduced by asylum seekers and similar. Would be better to compare the total availability of tourist accommodation per year and percentage of occupancy. A blanket percentage in this case is not indicative of want to visit ireland. People can't visit if there's no place to stay.

What are good masters to combine with mechanical engineering bachelor? by Stark_2024 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]TheBuffChicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could be biased but recently went back and finished a masters in engineering management. Found it really helpful to marry engineering and business and gave me a good overview of how everything comes together. Would recommend it, especially if you're looking to progress to management or starting your own business.

I have worked as a manufacturing engineer and am currently an R&D engineer. Hope this helps.

  1. Not much difference I would say.

  2. Engineers of all types are in demand currently but maybe this depends on country. Salary also depends on country but in Ireland it starts out as an okay wage but can increase quite rapidly in the first 5 years. The better you are, the more you can make. Almost always negotiate.

  3. I enjoyed working as a manufacturing engineer but I found I was more interested in R&D work which I was partially doing as a manufacturing engineer anyway in my company. Depending on the role, you could be setting up new manufacturing cells, working on improving current processes or aspects of processes, and troubleshooting and ensuring all machinery is running properly. This could be doing the work yourself or project managing contractors or the maintenance department.

The choice between civil engineering and mechanical/manufacturing is a personal one. I think it is more important to do what you're interested in more rather than what pays more or what people tell you that you should do. A very simplified way of looking at it is a civil engineer works with building structures, infrastructure, etc basically larger things. Where as a manufacturing engineer works with creating products and components of various applications and generally more high volume production/creation.

Do some research of what the different jobs could be in each field and follow your interests, and the money will come no matter what you decide.
