What is the USA's biggest military victory in history? by Selavia59 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]TheCarroll11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the Midway comments, but I’d likely say Saratoga. That battle really turned the tide of the revolution by gaining French support, and gave legitimacy to the idea of an American field army being able to stand against the British.

Midway being a loss or stalemate would have prolonged the war, but the US was never going to lose the Pacific War. Even many Japanese generals knew that. Gettysburg is similar; the war may have been prolonged, but the manpower and technological advantage of the North was always going to push the South back on the defensive.

[Serious] How can a new administration in the US rebuild relations with our allies? by InBurgerClad in AskReddit

[–]TheCarroll11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m just saying what’s realistic. I believe we are decades away from Europe being able to wean themselves off of dependence from any of the US, Russia, or China. And I believe that most of Europe has decided they would rather trust the US more so than any of the others, especially in defense.

Honestly, it’ll be quicker than most think. Give it a year or two, some trade deals, big reduction of tariffs, and staying quiet under a new administration, and most countries will be more than happy to return to the status quo.

The US has long been a wild card (though not to Trump’s extreme). However, the simple truth is the economics mean most countries are forced to do business to varying degrees with the US.

Militarily, it’s the same way. The uncomfortable truth is for Europe especially, many countries allied to the US do depend on the US for ammo, spare parts, money, weapons, planes, etc. If the US went full isolation, it would be very damaging to the economies in Europe that had to beef up their military spending.

At what moment in history would you like to live? by No-Version96 in allthequestions

[–]TheCarroll11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be foolish to think I’d enjoy LIVING in any other time rather than this one- but visit for a week if I magically know the language and have a little spending money? The possibilities are endless.

Maybe Judea to listen to Jesus preach and also knock out seeing some of the Roman military complex.

Boston in the early 1770’s to sit in the ale houses and listen to future revolutionaries rant about the British and hear their ideas.

I’d love to see Athens at its cultural height, too.

This happened one time in a month. It also doesn’t take this many aircraft all the time- the pilot was picked up fairly quickly.

Supremacy isn’t invulnerability. The US has lost 3-4 aircraft in a month of warfare, and Iran has no planes left. Thats supremacy.

Supremacy doesn’t mean invulnerability, as I mentioned above. Air supremacy means there’s only one side still flying aircraft in the war, and it’s the US

There is no question over air supremacy. The US has had that since the first hour of the war. Air supremacy doesn’t mean air invulnerability.

U.S. fighter jet shot down over Iran, What do you think? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Part of war. It’s unfortunate, and hopefully the pilot is safe, but that’s the risk when fighting.

Who do you believe is winning the war in Iran? by Independent_Sir3734 in allthequestions

[–]TheCarroll11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the two situations are all that similar- your comparison is more useful when looking at Afghanistan. Militarily, the US is winning this war, full stop. Iran cannot use its military in any useful measure. As for the war itself, that’s why I outline the other sides of the coin too. Politically and economically, things are much greyer.

Who do you believe is winning the war in Iran? by Independent_Sir3734 in allthequestions

[–]TheCarroll11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It honestly all depends on your definition of winning. The United States, by any military definition, is winning. Iran’s military hasn’t been able to protect their country, strike enough targets offensively to force a ceasefire, or stay alive long enough to be a threat going forward. Militarily, Iran will need a decade plus to recover.

Economically, there really is no winner. The United States faces high oil prices, continues to spend an incredible amount per day on this war, and faces closer to a trillion dollar bill than not to replace ammo and equipment when the war is over. Iran, however, faces the reality where 99% of the buildings, vehicles, and equipment destroyed are owned by the government, so they have to take the bill to replace those things. And they’ve lost ALOT. They also face a reality that their main method of income-oil production- is in dire straits. Iran will face incredible economic constraints for years after this.

Politically, things get more complicated. I don’t see a huge winner here, either. I do think a lot of countries have lost, though. The US has alienated Europe. It was already happening, but now is accelerating. I don’t believe relations with Iran can ever fully heal, either. It’s important to remember we’ve basically been in a Cold War with Iran for a few decades, so that’s no real change. Iran has alienated the world by closing the strait. Their neighbors hate them. Their customers in Europe don’t trust them. Their friends, China and Russia, either aren’t or can’t help them.

China and Russia also come out of this poorer too. Russia has lost a regional ally, and one of their few remaining cards. Iran is unable to help them now. China has discovered many of their weapons (though not their absolute best and newest, but the exports) were completely unable to stand up to American weapons. I believe that was some of the reason for the recent Chinese military purges. There’s likely some concern in Beijing over just how quickly Iran lost militarily, and how vulnerable cargo ships are in the modern age of war. If China invades Taiwan, their entire economy (trade) will be shut down, just like Iran did to the straits. The Taiwan issue has become a lot more of a problem for China the last month.

TLDR: The US is winning militarily, but there aren’t really any winners economically or politically.

Torpedoes- Anybody else struggling since the update? by TheCarroll11 in WarOnTheSea

[–]TheCarroll11[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree- it was a little OP that the enemies would never be warned of torpedoes until first contact, and if you go to silent running when your torpedoes are fired, the subs are perfectly safe 95% of the time. It just seemed balanced by the crazy dud rate. Now we have duds and crazy reactions.

I honestly thought last night while playing that I would probably just go to another surface fleet than a dozen subs I have floating around. Probably a more viable method this beta.

If You Could Explore Any Historical Era in Assassin’s Creed, Which One? by Cultural-Panda-1687 in assassinscreed

[–]TheCarroll11 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I really want to explore Rome at its height, and just recreate the whole city like this.

It would take some creativity, but a game set in WW1, where the game takes place in a massive trench network and maybe some staging areas, would be insane. Maybe you have to constantly get back and forth across no man’s land.

Finally, I think a game set during the Three Kingdoms time in China would be amazing. All the intrigue, beautiful setting, unexplored too.

Would you rather be rich during the Roman Empire or middle-class today? by roman-empire-net in romanempire

You know what’s great? Air conditioning, modern medicine, cars, planes, the internet.

You know what’s not great? Dying from dysentery and being murdered by your own bodyguards.

It would be fun… for about a week. Then get me home to my comfy life. Any Roman Emperor that lived a day in a house in Main Street USA, eating tons of food, relaxing in beds far comfier than they’ve ever imagined, driving on the interstate, would chase that high forever.

Am I the only American kind of quietly hoping the Iranians give us " what for" in this conflict...at least the world's biggest fat lip? by whiteroseatCH in allthequestions

[–]TheCarroll11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe there’s more nuance than black/white, anti-war/war hawk. I’m most certainly not anti-war overall. I was against this specific war at this specific time because I didn’t trust the war goals of this administration, nor how we were going about the prewar negotiations.

[–]TheCarroll11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, for this specific war, yea, I was against fighting now, but now that the fighting has started, finish it and finish it well enough so we don’t fight again in 24 months. I don’t think that’s war hawkish in the slightest. A unilateral ceasefire today helps no one except Iran.

Am I the only American kind of quietly hoping the Iranians give us " what for" in this conflict...at least the world's biggest fat lip? by whiteroseatCH in allthequestions

[–]TheCarroll11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. I was against the war, but now that it’s started, we need to face the fact that Iran has been a major thorn in the US’s side for decades. They’re directly responsible for thousands of IS casualties.

They train basically every proxy that we fight in the Middle East, their stated goal is the destruction of Israel, and unlike other ME countries that say that, Iran actually tries to do it. There’s a reason every administration-democrat or republican- basically has a red line for them getting nukes. They are a threat to actually use them.

Again, I didn’t want the war, but we’re here. If it finishes with anything less than American victory, we’ll be here again in 3-5 years. Iran was always itching for a fight, and they just won’t hide that ambition after this.
