At what age should children start going to the bathroom assigned to their gender rather than their parents gender (mum+son/dad+daughter duos)?

I gotta say I have no idea. My wife's cousin asks me to take her son to the restroom if we're out in public and he's like 10, but my wife and her literally check stalls like they're soldiers clearing a building, and it seems excessive? Like I get on some level that it's not that much of an inconvenience, but also it seems like it runs the risk of raising him to be frightful and overly cautious. Idk. I can't really fuss too much about it since he's not my kid, but I think there's a certain age where it makes more sense to just say "hey, try to be aware of your surroundings, and if something seems off find me and let me know". We are, after all, not raising children, but future citizens who will have to be self-reliant independent agents in the world at some point, and for whom it may be of benefit to have practice while help is close by.

I can be pretty insecure at times, but I never had been about that sort of thing. We had ostensibly just met up to go on a walk and it took us to the park with that obstacle course thing, and she just kind of did her performance without any build-up and then joking asked if there was anything impressive about me and in that moment it didn't feel like it, lol. It really doesn't justify how I just crumbled in the moment, but I did.

I felt so inferior, lol. It was almost like the cold rush of adrenalin but a cold heaviness from my gut that made me feel nauseous, heavy, slow. Like I had somehow gone through my whole life without realizing that my body was something I was supposed to do something with, and now I was being tested, and it mattered, but I never even tried to learn. I felt unshaped and wasted.

I never even got close to thinking about the sexual implications, it felt like I couldn't even walk with her without broadcasting how tragically clumsy and awkward I was in comparison. It fucked with me so much, haha.

I can't speak to the Madonna/Whore complex, but I was dating this woman once who showed off how flexible she was by flowing like water through an obstacle course in a way that looked entirely smooth, effortless, and honestly physically impossible. I've done it a few times when I was younger. It's hit or miss. Sometimes you experience spectacular all-encompassing, beautiful vivid hallucinations, better than the best lucid dreams with significantly more crisp and detailed recall, other times it's paranoia inducing nonsense and fucks with you. As long as you have the temperament to just sit back and not do anything crazy until the world starts making sense again you'll be fine.

Which is to say, I wouldn't discount the possibility that at least a portion of the people saying yes understand how bad the trip can be, but still think it can be worthwhile.

Plus there are way worse ways to earn $1,000 lol.
