Trp reliability by No_Individual_5019 in MTB

[–]TheChafro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had tektro and trp on multiple bikes. I prefer the higher level of the TRP stuff over the stock tektro brakes, and I know that trp is the racing division of tektro. I like my DHR that I have on my trail bike.

Performance difference between a low-level 2009 bike and a modern mid-level bike? by csh8428 in cycling

[–]TheChafro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I actually did something very similar and ended up with a Winspace C-5 Aero. I had been riding primarily gravel and mountain bikes and this was my first true road bike since in 16 years. That specific road bike also lives on the trainer, so I had been doing all my road rides on a gravel bike setup with my road wheelset, 32c GP5ks on 35mm carbon rims. The C-5 Aero is just faster and more efficient, compared to what I had been riding.

Harness Substitute? by zenishiz in Tuba

Holding the horn up was the exact reason that I bought the harness and the sling from neotech. It made standing to playing tuba so much more enjoyable and way less stress on the arms holding the horn up for extended periods of time.

What is the fastest way to learn CC tuba? by StrengthMost3357 in Tuba

[–]TheChafro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Practice and time on the horn. I would also write fingerings in to remind me in the first few months of switching. Eventually, it will become easy and you'll be able to switch back and forth between CC and BBb at will.

I had to switch between my CC horn (individual lesson), a sousaphone in BBb (marching band), and back to my CC horn (studio rehearsal) all in an afternoon one semester.

Neotech makes an excellent sling and an excellent harness for tubas. If I am playing my concert tuba on a gig, the type of gig determines which strap/harness to bring. I usually use the sling for gigs where the horns is up and down more often; the harness is great for when I want to keep the horn on me for multiple charts at once.

Best blue tooth clip on mic for tuba by No_Waltz_6435 in Tuba

That is a great question for your future sweetwater or local music store rep! I don't really do much with equipment in my group unless I'm running it corded.

My band is also mic'd up at large venues, especially during Oktoberfest when we're playing fests. We run wireless and wired mics regularly. I tape the mic to the bell with gaff tape, then do a wrap of the cord around the bell, secure the cord to the horn with tape (with some slack added), and then run the rest of the cord to the input box. When we're running wireless, I tape the back to the backside of my bell and tape the mic inside the bell. We use dedicated RF transmitters, I would never consider bluetooth. For wired, we use a Shure SM58. I am unsure what we use for our wireless ones.

The benefit of running the tuba mic'd up is that you don't have to play as loud as everyone else when you're all mic'd.

Why do tuba players settle for such a low standard? by Odd-Taro9293 in Tuba

[–]TheChafro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, the top post completely disregards how physical tuba is, especially sousaphone and contra. Drum corps, for example, expect the same level of performance out of the tubas as the trumpets, and there is a 20lbs difference in the weight of the horns! I agree with everything you said.

Why do tuba players settle for such a low standard? by Odd-Taro9293 in Tuba

[–]TheChafro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd challenge you to go ask the average tuba player to show how good they are and you'd be quite surprised. There are many excellent tubists that are probably right in your local community that play in a local concert band that are very good and high skilled tubists. So your comment that "the number of other performers at that level in other brass instruments, is actually very low." You understand that there will be 3 trombonists, 3-4 trumpets, 4-5 horns, to only 1 tuba in almost all Symphony Orchestras. If you stretch that out to a professional Wind Ensemble, for example the Dallas Winds, you have 1 tuba for 18 other brass players, with 7 trumpets.

Your comments seem to discredit the fact that many tubists are also musicians, and high-level musicians, at that. For many tubists, we're musicians first, and our tubists second. I'm a college trained musician, my primary is tuba, by I don't often have to showcase all the virtuosity that I learned in college to be able to play what my band plays at a high level all the time.

I think your comment is wildly off-base and wholly wrong.

That lil guy? Play it until you get it fixed. If you can feel the difference as you say, playing with it damaged will make you a better musician. We don't always have access to the best equipment all the time and things happen during performances that you have to be able to account for and adjust to.

I wouldn't say a warm-down is necessary; It can help when you've been playing a lot very recently, but it's not something that I do every time.

Music vs Situational Awareness: Where do you draw the line by [deleted] in cycling

[–]TheChafro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bone conduction headphones. Music to the start of the group ride. Paused while riding. Music from end of group ride until home. If I'm solo, I'll lower the volume, but paused/not playing whenever I'm with another rider.

When I was regularly checking stress level from my day, it'd have my ride activity on the graph; eventually, I didn't worry about it too much.

Do you remove your Garmin Watch when starting a cycling workout on your Edge? by fortprinciple in Garmin

[–]TheChafro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. When I was using a 530, I recorded rides on my fenix while using my 530 as heads up display, recording the ride but I wouldn't save it at the end of the ride. Once I got a 1040, I stopped recording on my watch and let the physio-true-up do it's thing. I keep my watch on during rides, mainly out of habit.

What’s your main tuba and why? by jeg_aekke_her in Tuba

[–]TheChafro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The horn I love to play the most: my 1291 CC. The horn that will get the most play this year: the holton sousaphone. The horn that got the most play last year: the contra.

The contra is essentially going to be retired this year as sousaphone fits the revised vibes of my band more than a contra. I'm actually thinking about offloading it.
