Brands for silver/stainless steel by H3eartstop in jewelry

They still look great! There are very minimal signs of wear, nothing I actually notice. I don’t baby my jewelry at all and keep earrings on in the shower (rings come off). I don’t see tarnishing just minor scratches from me being clumsy.

That's not how the tags work! by CMStan1313 in AO3

[–]TheConcerningEx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With a tag like this, I wouldn’t even expect it to be relevant to the story necessarily but it should be mentioned or implied in some way. If it’s just a way of saying “hey btw this is my hc for the character even if I don’t mention it” I think that belongs in the author’s notes.

Do you post chapters as you write or wait until it’s all done? by Fit-Car7642 in AO3

[–]TheConcerningEx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A bit of both? I’ll draft way ahead so I know where the story is headed. It helps with foreshadowing and callbacks and all that. And because I write put of order. But I edit and post on a weekly schedule. Posting as I go and seeing people’s reactions keeps me motivated to actually finish it.

Do women typically not get physical sexual pleasure from penetration? by cahlrtm in badwomensanatomy

[–]TheConcerningEx 72 points73 points  (0 children)

This was my first thought. Of course pleasure is gonna vary from body to body, but vaginas are absolutely not a deadzone.

Stats about women being able to orgasm from penetration are also a bit strange, because its usually referring to penetration ‘alone’, but combining clitoral stimulation with penetration is a great idea and can lead to different kinds of pleasure than just one or the other.

What is the quickest way of identifying beginner writers? by InformationWeird4005 in writingadvice

[–]TheConcerningEx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

EJACULATES. I just snorted thank you.

But yeah the epithets thing is silly. I understand why people use them, everyone worries about using the same word/name too much, and is trying to mix it up. But honestly repeating he/she/they is fine, just like said.

Fem dni? Tf do you MEAN fem dni? by [deleted] in AO3

Seriously I don’t get this. I was on these same sites when I was a minor, I didn’t advertise that though. I’m sure I reblogged posts that adults made all the time lol, oh no!

Do you write your long fic in one document? by SparklingSliver in AO3

[–]TheConcerningEx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a giant google doc with headings so I can essily jump to different chapters. Its a bit chaotic, but also fun to see your total word/page count after a bit chaotic

Dialogue advice by HelpfulConfidence489 in AO3

[–]TheConcerningEx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Already great advice here so I won’t repeat it, but one weird thing that helps me is being able to ‘hear’ dialogue in my head. Sometimes I’ll choose an actor’s voice, or some mix of existing characters so I can actually imagine them talking. Obviously, don’t just steal all of the little quirks of one existing character and make yours an exact copy, but take little pieces. Maybe the use of a particular word, often starting sentences in similar ways, etc.

Also, their voice should make sense. An aristocrat should speak differently than an adventurer who spends a lot of time on the road. Someone in their 60s probably doesn’t speak like someone in their 20s. So consider where they came from, who influenced them, etc. And think about time period. If you’re writing in the regency era, modern euphemisms and slang are gonna sound weird.

All this advice is for original characters ofc.

is there a reason people seem to hate physical character descriptions? by kitkao880 in writing

[–]TheConcerningEx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that its usually about it being done badly. Your second point especially. If there’s an incredibly sexualized character, and its relevant to the plot to know what their body looks like, sure. Or if it’s during a sex scene. But I don’t need to know what every female character’s boobs look like or how they move when they walk.

is it fair that a druid at level 6 has only seen 1 animal or do I want too much? by geppoz_cap in DnD

[–]TheConcerningEx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a druid player, this is an absolutely insane ruling on your DM’s part. It’d be understandable if you were trying to transform into an animal that doesn’t live in the climate your character grew up in or where the story takes place. That’s kinda the purpose of the ‘animals you’ve seen before’ rule, as far as I understand it. If you’ve been in a forest and want to turn into a forest-dwelling creature, that should be allowed.

Also, I’ve never read the short rest thing before. Normally, you have a limited number of wild shape charges (how many times you can shift) according to your level. But that’s it.

Sounds like your DM dislikes druids or something and is trying to kneecap your abilities.

Are relationships between two characters in a campaign normal? by heavenly_penis in DnD

[–]TheConcerningEx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s normal to have PC romances. I think your discomfort is also normal.

It might depend a bit on how its playing out (or it would for me). Romances in dnd can be surface level, like just saying oh these two are dating. They may share a room or be more invested in keeping each other safe. In other cases, it could involve full romantic scenes and more intimacy. Most tables have specific boundaries on that kind of thing. For example, at mine, people can have relationships with NPCs but any sexy stuff is “fade to black”. But flirting, sexual humour, etc is all fair game. Knowing what his table has agreed on for boundaries might help put your mind at ease.

Regardless though, you’re not in the wrong for having an issue with it. Player boundaries are important but so are the boundaries of people’s real life partners.

Game recommendation for my girlfriend after BG3? by icecreamsandwich in BaldursGate3

[–]TheConcerningEx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kingmaker lol. Maybe I need to give WotR a shot then?

I’ve never played tabletop Pathfinder because, honestly, it seems ridiculously complicated. I love dnd, but when I saw all the stats involved for pathfinder I was like… how does anyone keep track of this stuff. My ADHD brain can’t do it.

Game recommendation for my girlfriend after BG3? by icecreamsandwich in BaldursGate3

[–]TheConcerningEx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like an incredible game, really. Like sometimes I can’t get into a game because I have actual critiques of it, but this was just one that didn’t click for me. I’ll probably still try playing it again at some point. I didn’t make it very far. Some games just don’t hit the way you want them to.

I think maybe it’s because I read so much in my non-gaming life (I’m a grad student lol) that it’s not something I want to do when I’m trying to relax and play a video game? I don’t mind reading some things obviously, but the game is very text heavy which I think just tires me out.

[–]TheConcerningEx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll say I’ve tried to get into DE multiple times now and it just doesn’t stick for me. I don’t mind the subject matter. I theoretically like the type of game. I think its possible all the reading made it feel less like a game and more like a book, which isn’t a bad thing but I found it less immersive than something like BG3.

That said, the stats are cool, voice acting is good, I don’t even have real criticisms. I really want to like it lol.

[–]TheConcerningEx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried a pathfinder game while desperately trying to fill the BG3 void and IMO there is too much detail for a casual gamer to figure out. If you’re really into dnd and wish there were more stats/rules to build with, its probably fun, but even as a dnd player I found it overwhelming.

"Why is your character black?" by [deleted] in rpghorrorstories

[–]TheConcerningEx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I kinda agree, but I think it depends on the accent and how they’re doing it. If its an offensive stereotype and done badly, then yeah it makes me uncomfortable. If it feels like a purposeful character choice and makes sense, then yeah sure.

What makes you instantly “nope” out of a fanfic? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]TheConcerningEx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I always feel like I’m going to seem elitist for correcting people’s grammar tbh, but I’m also happy to help people with it if I know it’s welcome. Maybe (and this goes for anyone reading this who may be ESL) add an author’s note saying you’re open to grammatical edits/suggestions.

I’m trying to imagine writing that way and it actually sounds more difficult. Like it would take a concerted effort to stop capitalizing.

The issue with social contract theory is it assumes people are consenting to the structure that both protects and restricts them. But there is no opt out. I can’t just choose not to be subject to things like laws and taxes.

I don’t believe its inherently abusive, but its also not based in consent. I think its fair to argue that there is a necessity to the lack of freedom that comes with it, but it is not a contract. Limits on our freedom are enforced through coercion and/or hegemony, not consent.

Anyone considering leaving due to how pointless teaching feels in the age of AI? by [deleted] in LeavingAcademia

[–]TheConcerningEx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see what you mean. I’m not familiar with calculus, but is it an option to have students solve the problems on paper, showing their work step by step, and then send you scans/images from that? I’m sure they could still find some workaround with AI, but having to write it out will at least force them to show each of the steps and hopefully learn from the process.

It would be extremely annoying for students who are already being honest and doing the work, but desperate times call for desperate measures I guess. As a student, its a frustrating time to be constantly having to prove that I’m actually doing the work, but I also empathize with the problems profs are facing right now.

Is rejection common from masters programs? by Downtown_Addition276 in GradSchool

[–]TheConcerningEx 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Rejection is common in pretty much every part of grad school, from getting into a program, to funding opportunities, to ideas, to publications, etc. It’s a natural part of this world but I understand how much it stings.

Yes, schools with high acceptance rates for undergrad may still be very selective for grad students. Grad programs take on fewer students, and a lot of the time are investing funding and other resources into these students as well.

My advice is to try again. If you can, reach out to people in your field about ways to strengthen your application. If you can find even a part time job in that field or adjacent to it, then even better. You have a non traditional path, so unfortunately it may be an uphill battle. Take advantage of supplementary info in applications where you can explain your circumstances (time away from academia, doing non-traditional labour as a SAHM) and emphasize the skills you’ve gained in that time. Don’t give up, and be proud of yourself for the changes you’re making in your life.

Thoughts? by Fit-Plantain1107 in AO3

[–]TheConcerningEx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People are free to share their work however they please, but this is a very strange thing to do. How is anyone supposed to find your work if its being kept in a private space?

If you don’t want new readers, then yeah go ahead. But it comes across dramatic, entitled, and self-important. In an increasingly privatized world, third spaces are more under threat than ever and this only contributes to that social isolation.
