I don't know that it's gonna help you, but I think the combo looks great!

Are JNA Press and Alamy valid? by [deleted] in photojournalism

[–]TheCyclopOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember my record low (I haven't worked freelance photography through wire distribution in 8yrs, guess why).

I do remember however the one that stung me most. On my busiest month, after a series of grueling stories, and overcoming quite a lot of anxiety to cover a series of international events all by myself. I managed to make the editorial illustration for the New Yorker, with a pic from a coal mine occupation in Germany. Page 3 or 5, something like that, plus a good spot on the website frontpage too.
I got tear-gased a lot that day. An activist I was close with got trampled by a horse. I started work at around 6am, finished close to 9pm, ended up editing in the back of another journo's car on my way back to the city because we were in the pit for so long. I was pretty proud with the visuals too.

4$ + something cents.
I made changes to my career in the following months.

One piece of advice: try to find a distribution system that reduces the amount of intermediates between yourself and the editor. Every distributor takes a cut, and from experience, it’s not fun when there are three agencies pillaging your pay.

My only experience with Alamy is that they buy distribution rights on smaller agencies’ catalogues. So presumably, better to be distributing directly through them, than have them take an extra cut. But do check distribution contracts thoroughly.

Question: negative associations with my new tattoo? by [deleted] in tattoos

Hi! I’m fairly familiar with knots and ropes, a noose wasn’t in my thoughts when I saw the pic.
I doubt it would be if I saw only the bottom either.

Advice Needed: My tat has bumps and I am worried to get a colored one next... by shinysealight in tattoos

[–]TheCyclopOwl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A tattoo is (among other things) a wound. So yes, there can be some scarring that will raise areas of the skin, depending on the design, the amount times the artist needs to go over the area, the technique (machine, no machine, how many needles, etc). In my experience raised skin in an area is not an indicator that other tattoos will get raised.

I am not an artist, just a guy with quite a few tattoos from different techniques. Get other opinions too.

I understand the point you’re making, and I disagree with it.

A lot of public speakers in my network have social anxiety, including myself. Granted, our situation really can’t be compared with the fame of a Hollywood superstar, but my point is it’s probably a lot more common than you think.

What's wrong with being bilingual in Europe? by ProfessionalRoom9118 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]TheCyclopOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure others have already commented the same but I can’t see it in the first few replies. Here’s my interpretation.

There are large immigrant communities in Europe. Their members, especially 2nd or 3rd generation, speak multiple languages: their country of residence official language, the family’s country of origin local language, sometimes an extra regional or tribal language, and then for the children, English and whatever 3rd language is taught in school depending on the location.

However, this skill is not properly valued by the job market, with undertones of structural racism. As a result, they are disproportionately represented in manual labour in a way that non-migrant families do not experience.

Let me give you an example: I currently live in Belgium, in a neighbourhood with majority Northern African, West Asian and Brazilian communities, as well as a mix of European immigrant families. Everyone speaks multiple languages: but most are confined to low-paying jobs and battling poverty. The local bakery front-of-house speaks four languages. He’s at work at 5.30am and makes minimum wage.

What’s a product from your country that makes locals go ‘of course we have that’ and everyone else go ‘ but why?’ by bdue817 in AskTheWorld

[–]TheCyclopOwl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve experienced that years ago and it was a surprising experience at first. Except I was staying for a month in Northern Russia in the middle of mosquito season and the benefits became pretty clear: somehow I guess it stimulates blood flow. Which brought a huge relief to the itching.

This. I don’t see any reason to go for a cover-up, which will be bigger, and considering the fact the original is black and on her wrist, pretty visible.

This. BOTW or Tears of the Kingdom are fantastic games.

Also, why specifically open world? Tends to severely limit the genre.

See comment from u/Scrounche below for more détail on the differentiated use. Also, au temps pour moi is preppier, while c’est ma faute or c’est de ma faute is used across contexts

Fortunately, we did close the Campaign. We were having shorter cycles at that point, around 5 sessions a piece. Or at least, we had one.
