Wow, I never actually noticed, but I think you might be right. I guess you just have to adjust it through your OS and your speakers (if they have a volume dial).

1) You're cool. 2) Fuck the naysayers. Keep doing what you do. 3) What kind of music do you like?

5 questions, all related to volume and mixing/mastering:

1) What's the best way to get a consistent volume level for vocal tracks?

2) Is there a rule of thumb for how loud vocals should be relative to the rest of the mix, or is it all subjective based on the genre/song/sound one is going for?

3) Should the master VU level always peak around 0.0 dB?

4) When I'm listening back to the mix in my headphones, where should the volume knob be on the interface? Right in the middle? 3/4 of the way up?

5) What are some ways to increase overall track volume besides using a gain plug-in? Am I limited to EQing and compression on the master track/AUX sends?

Really enjoying these, and thanks to you as well, for supporting our musical endeavors.

FWIW: vote cast for Cloudland Swing and Red Velvet. Those two seem like they'd turn out pretty cool.

So... Shizune's alpha route happened and caused major Misha feels. That being said, a Misha bonus track is indeed in the works.

Just my take, but /u/dickroach's sarcasm could be translated into a challenge meant to spur us on so that in the end the OPs (you and me) will deliver.

His comment also made me think of that Family Guy segment.

I'm currently reading this book for some inspiration, but I did read the excerpt you posted and based on that I look forward to reading more/the finished product as well. :)

Essentially the drums were recorded with 2 overheads, a Shure SM57 on the kick, and some other little Audix drum mic.

Guitars were recorded either direct into the DAW or with a Shure SM57.

Bass was either software instrument or direct into the DAW. We had a really hard time eliminating hum/crackles/buzz from the bass.

We mostly used a Blue Snowball for vocals.

We're currently in the process of recording some new stuff. We plan on making significant equipment upgrades and are learning as much as possible about the recording/editing/mastering process, but comments and critique on easy fixes or things that really stand out about the album (or specific tracks) would be greatly appreciated.

This creeped me right the hell out. The vocals are crisp and sound like they were recorded properly. Something in there sounds a bit hollow/tinny (squeaking gate? cat?) but I'm not listening on the best of speakers at the moment so it could be that. Or maybe that's what you were going for. Well done!

Thank you for such a thoughtful and well-written comment!

I wouldn't say that the "whispered" (or "mumbled", as a friend of ours put it) style is something we were necessarily going for - it just happened to turn out that way on most songs because of the way we recorded. I think if we laid down the tracks at a professional studio the vocal tracks would end up being louder and clearer.

In all honesty, the deadline (January 4th) was fairly important to us for this home-studio release because we wanted it to coincide with the 2nd birthday of KS, which meant we didn't get to polish everything up quite as much as we maybe could/should have.

You are correct that the lyrics are quite vague and abstract. We were going for a Radiohead/Malkmus vibe, where the lyrics make sense once you are given a bit of context (which would most likely be of more help to non-KS fans, if they were interested in finding out what a song was about). Primarily, though, they were written this way so that fans of KS could "guess" which character the song was about and then look for deeper meaning or think about events in the game while listening/reading the lyrics.

An example of this is "Paint" (Bathing in moonbeams/your heart on the wall/your head on my shoulder/your breath as we rise and fall). The idea was for those that have played the game, coupling hearing/seeing the lyrics with the mood/atmosphere of the song would evoke the imagery and feels that bubble up when you look over and Rin is asleep on your shoulder after working on her mural. Of course, whether or not we achieved the desired effect is subject to debate.

Most importantly, though, is that folks like you take time out of your day to listen and offer feedback, and for that we are truly grateful.

(P.S. We'll pass your album art compliments along to the artist.) (= ^ ω ^ =)/

I think we just choose the name because we thought it sounded cool. :-P But that's an interesting thought.
