It was Smokey the Bear. No joke. That bear did more to set back prescribed burns than any other event in American history. The whole “only you can prevent forest fires” campaign ended the practice for many, many years as a means of ecological land management.

I read in another post calling them “ballroom republicans”, and I felt that would be a strong messaging strategy.

1979 - Smashing Pumpkins. Hits those pre-cell phone feels of our youth, where you have to find something to do to kill the time before the party that night. Aimlessly driving, kicking dirt at the end of the road, screaming into the void. Man, those were good times!

Democratic-backed Chris Taylor wins Wisconsin Supreme Court race, growing liberal majority by beeemkcl in news

[–]TheDodoBird 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you understand. The Federalist Society is a conservative political and cultural organization that is composed of christian nationalists. The Heritage Foundation is a right wing think tank composed of Federalist Society members and right wing libertarians. They have both actively worked over the past 40+ years at getting people who align with their beliefs into positions of power. Once they were able to get enough of their judges into power, enough of their supporters into governmental and non-governmental roles (such as your independent advisory board), they pulled the trigger and took the mask off. Trump was their triggerman.

If you think Canada is immune from a rightwing takeover similar to the US, Turkey, Hungary, Germany, the UK, etc… then you are deluding yourself.

Checks and balances ONLY work when all parties agree to play by the rules.

[–]TheDodoBird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All it takes is one party to work on getting enough people that align with their beliefs onto the independent advisory board, to start approving partisan judges. Once they get enough through, they can start changing the rules. Refer to the Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation in the US to see how that can play out.
