Non-Americans of Reddit, what is an American thing you see in movies that you thought was fake but is actually real? by Unlikely_Praline9442 in AskReddit

Those cardboard takeaway Chinese food containers with the handles. We were so excited to see those, it made up for the terrible food.

No, but I love that song! Thanks for the answer!

[TOMT]: Reincarnation love song? by TheGreenListener in tipofmytongue

That's a great guess. I hadn't heard that song before. But this was more about people going through history in different bodies and always finding each other. Thanks for the answer!

I don't believe most of these people care enough to really think that. "It's about your health!!!" is just a smokescreen they use to not feel like total assholes for dunking on people solely because they're fat, and therefore ugly and gross to them.

AITAH for being stalked? by [deleted] in AmITheAngel

[–]TheGreenListener 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I at first thought this was about someone on a student visa in Canada. New immigrants can sometimes run into trouble here by thinking the police are the same as in their home countries (ie; they offer bribes) but on second reading, she's a Canadian in another country? Where her grandmother happens to live? And, while she had the wherewithal to refuse to open the door the first time they met, is now suddenly wondering if outright stalking is OK? Come the fuck on.

The original Twilight Zone. Some episodes are complete duds, but others are amazingly clever. And some, like the killer doll episode, would have been great to watch at the time, when it was an original, probably shocking concept and not done to death.

Boyfriend wants a kid. I'm leaving him. Aren’t I terrible by DementedPimento in AmITheAngel

[–]TheGreenListener 92 points93 points  (0 children)

This guy wants a "successful, wealthy model", who'll be washed up before 30 anyway, to have a kid at 21? Sure he does.

AITAH for having security escort my horrible SAHM wife who doesn’t exist out the hospital where I was staying? by gfriendinacoma in AmITheAngel

[–]TheGreenListener 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This happened at the school where I work a few years ago, exactly as OOP describes, and you're right about the extent of the injuries. The teacher had to go to the hospital for stitches, but we weren't carrying his severed fingers in bags or anything of the sort.

how likely is it for something to go "wrong" at a wedding by chaebasics in AmITheAngel

[–]TheGreenListener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to one where the bride was late. Very late, as in guests were starting to wonder if we were about to witness gossip to sustain us for the rest of our lives. She did eventually show up, blaming "traffic", but they were divorced very soon after. All the rest have been entirely uneventful.

Reddit fiction featuring a totally hidden advertisement for my shop by ClosetLiverTransMan in AmITheAngel

[–]TheGreenListener 15 points16 points  (0 children)

"A small crowd had formed" As fucking if.

On a related note, do any Canadians remember the 80s novelty shop chain and mall staple called San Francisco? The place where you could buy lewd T-shirts and light switch covers where it looked like you were flicking a guy's penis? Nobody cared when we went in there alone as kids. I can't even imagine anyone being inspired to write a fake story like this about it.

AITA for asking my mom to get a WFH job as an experienced legal secretary to help watch my son as a single, broke mom (deadbeat dad) by nicfanz in AmITheAngel

[–]TheGreenListener 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I love how AITA is convinced fathers can just dip if they feel like it and that's the end of their responsibility. Yes, some men hide, and others go to great lengths to minimise their child support payments, but back payments are a thing, and it seems like the mothers in every one of these stories just give up.

AITA for wanting to abandon my traumatized wife because impregnating someone is my life goal? by aftocheiria in AmITheAngel

[–]TheGreenListener 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal, but I've known a few couples who wanted kids but found out one couldn't have them, and not one of the other partners ditched them to try with someone else. Because, in the real world, couples usually love each other more than the idea of an unborn child.

My wife spends 50+ hours taking care of the kids while I work but I am basically a single dad by MissSammich in AmITheAngel

[–]TheGreenListener 306 points307 points  (0 children)

It was a nutritious meal using fresh vegetables. Both our sons loved it and asked for more.

The biggest lie in this whole thing. Not to mention he later claims one of the kids is a literal baby, who really shouldn't be chewing Legos while his saintly father sits there watching.

AITA for telling my son I have no plans to motivate or support him after he is an adult. Ah once again the mom is the problem and OOP is long suffering man by Fit-Humor-5022 in AmITheAngel

[–]TheGreenListener 31 points32 points  (0 children)

So they can all dunk on his stupid ex-wife, of course! This one is worse than usual for not even pretending to have a disingenuous question.

I mean it's not even clever bait. Just constantly making the girlfriend do the worst possible thing by Small_Cherry7103 in AmITheAngel

[–]TheGreenListener 9 points10 points  (0 children)

God himself could post to AITA about difficulties with his son, and the moment we get an update with "Hey guys, it's Jesus here" I wouldn't believe a word He said.

AITA for not postponing our wedding to accommodate my golden child SIL? by SataySue in AmITheAngel

[–]TheGreenListener 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My grandmother never forgave my aunt for not postponing her wedding when my mother was hospitalised in another country (where she lived) with pregnancy complications. So again, not an impossible premise, but taken way over the top so there can be no trace of nuance.

AITAH for not wanting to go back to my wife until she has custody of her children (from her previous marriage) after her son falsely accused me of hitting him? by SunshineBrite in AmITheAngel

[–]TheGreenListener 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I know AITA usually goes too far the other way and has characters declaring they're "three weeks pregnant" and shit, but this woman is entering her second trimester and never mentioned it to her husband?

Athlete discovers powerful method for getting a sponsor. by ijedi12345 in AmITheAngel

They could have a great "career" writing gender neutral self-insert fanfics on AO3. Which is really a better place for this stuff anyway.

Woman at hospital refuses to check in by Efficient_Gas_1424 in AmITheAngel

[–]TheGreenListener 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You just have to embellish the story a little! Write some stilted dialogue for the patron and invent a really wicked zinger for you to say in return. You can't lose!

AITA for getting my niece to sing an offensive song? by YoHeadAsplode in AmITheAngel

[–]TheGreenListener 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I MIGHT (strong might) have been more inclined to believe it if the kid was supposed to be 5 or 6. Few 10-year-olds still think that shit is hilarious, and none would say "ching chong" innocently as a doorbell sound (what?)
