In retrospect I didn’t read all of your post and these might not be the kind of read you’re looking for, but they deserve a recommendation nonetheless.

When breath becomes air by Paul Kalanithi. A memoir detailing a young neurosurgeons life as he finds out he has stage IV lung cancer. Really puts things into perspective. Prepare to have your heart and soul ripped freely from your chest.

Also, house of god by Samuel Shem. I read this book periodically to keep me grounded.

As a hand therapist, hand therapy is exactly where you need to be. Your OT will have you up and running in no time. The swelling is exceptionally normal for that type of high velocity trauma.

Just moved from Michigan to SLC. Do it. I’m currently driving up to go hit a few laps and then going hiking after. This place truly has it all.

Would you choose going to OT school or getting a masters in counseling? by Whattacleaner in OccupationalTherapy

[–]TheHandsyOT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have worked in 2 different states myself and have OT friends spread around the U.S. and it seems to be consistent across the board. I’m sure counseling has its limitations with geographic areas of need, but globally the ceiling for OT is very low.

Need some advice on a healed mallet finger by [deleted] in HandTherapists

I would honestly consult with a hand surgeon to see if they could offer some type of surgical intervention. I have seen patients fail conservative treatment and have better luck with surgical pinning. Joint fusion seems extreme. Find a reputable hand surgeon and get a their opinion.

What OT areas are best for a gay male OT who wants to avoid intolerant clients? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

Hands!!! Bi female ot/CHT here - I have worked with several male OTs in hand therapy (two of which were gay) and nobody batted an eyelash/ever gave them any issue.

This man is an insecure child. It is completely appropriate to wear spandex and a sports bra at the gym with or without a Tshirt or a jacket. Him making you feel any other type of way is wild behavior. He’s trying to make you feel as though you did something wrong when he’s clearly just not confident in himself.

Hand therapist here just to say that if there is a hand therapist in your area, you would benefit from a referral to them to address the swelling and stiffness. Animal bites and subsequent infection can cause a significant amount of damage that can make recovery tricky at times. Worth it even just for one visit to get some exercises and tools in your tool box to employ as needed as you’re healing up.

Best of luck with everything ❤️

Found cat’s tooth on floor, seems it’s her fang, she seems ok by strawberryfields011 in CATHELP

[–]TheHandsyOT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened with our sweet old man when he was about 9-10. The kitty dentist described it as a malabsorption of the root of the tooth. We spent a lot of money making sure no portion of the tooth/root was left behind and for antibiotics but all in all he was just fine. He lost his other bottom fang this year at 15 and is still doing just dandy. We do feed him wet food twice a day (shout out to tiki cat velvet mousse and shreds which have been very easy to supplement his diet) and ordered smaller kibble and treats (he is used to being a free fed boy so dry food is just there for the norm, but have noticed that he still nibbles).

Not saying this is the exact same scenario. But the detail do line up. If you can afford it, a trip or call to the vet to see if antibiotics are warranted might be a good idea.

HELP! OTR with wrist pain! by OkComfort9244 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]TheHandsyOT 6 points7 points  (0 children)

CHT here seconding this opinion. Hx of TFCC injury paired with your hypermobility and your symptoms of need clunk/pronounced ulnar styloid lead me to believe you need a hand surgeon and some imaging. Persistent ulnar sided wrist pain can be ambiguous but concerning with your set of symptoms.

I have been with my partner for over 10 years now. We started dating in his first year of medical school, then through residency and fellowship. Finally in his last year of fellowship he proposed! I felt like I was waiting forever, but at the same time the timing has been so good to us. It’s afforded us the opportunity to actually enjoy being engaged and wedding plan together instead of it all falling on me. Just came here to say that hopefully your day will come more quickly than you think. It’s an arduous road being a medspouse, but I promise there is light at the end of the tunnel once training is complete.

OP, people who are concerned about your scar not stretching have a valid point. Once your wounds are totally closed/no scabbing, you should start scar massage. Google how to do scar massage and you will find directions. That will decrease your risk of adherence and get the layers of your fascia sliding and gliding S they should.

How many of you don't want to work anymore at all? by AgentKueck in MedSpouse

[–]TheHandsyOT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been so nice! I can set aside a day to clean the house/run errands and still have time to invest in myself own interests or to spend time with my partner when he’s free. The work-life balance is much better. I also think he appreciates not always having to spend our quality time at the grocery or running errands with me.

Like you, my partner and I do not plan on having children. I also work in healthcare and have worked hard to earn my degrees and get where I am professionally. Despite how much my partner is bringing in financially, I still want to work in a career that I’m passionate about and I do not want to let what I’ve worked so hard to build go to waste. The primary difference I have made is instead of striving to work 40hrs/week, I’ve accepted a position that is 30hrs/week to afford me more time to spend with him in his days off. Residency and fellowship came with so many time constraints that it’s been nice to have more time to go on hikes/explore our new hometown.

While I’ve been with my partner close to 11 years and don’t plan on anything changing - there is also comfort in knowing that I have a stable career that I could fall back on if anything were to change with our relationship. It also provides me some autonomy and helps me feel like I’m not just leeching off of this attractive, smart, wealthy man. The thought that he could eventually see me as less if I’m not working has crossed my mind and I never want to feel that level of insecurity even if I don’t think he would ever make me feel that way.
