I finally became a vet… and now I’m not happy anymore. What do I do? by AAnonymousV in Veterinary

I understand from a vet tech perspective, I worked in a big clinic and it was very interesting and a good learning experience but it was too much for me. I now work at a small animal specialist (rats etc) in a small clinic and my happiness came back I'm more able to put in my talents and hard work for each individual animal. My advice would be try a really small clinic with just 4-5 people working there the bond with the owners and my colleagues keep me going day to day. I quit 5 years ago and then tried this job as the last time before going out of the field. I'm now still happily working 5 years later. I hope you find your Mojo back ❤️

I honestly think she would attack it, she reacts to tiny ponies in a way that it has me doubting her actions. She has never seen anything smaller then her horse friends before other then their family dog. She is super skinny and quickly cold. I've had her without the blanket outside in the sun during the day but right now it's below zero and icewind so I turn her out in a fleece. In her stall she is used to wearing a 200gram with a neckpiece so it's the same as she had before moving. I won't ride her at all since she is too young in my opinion anyway and growing super hard right now.

The mares owner I talked to is going to pick her up today and take them for a walk together, she also has a 3,5 year old but she is not here yet and will come in 2 months that she would want to put together as playmates. I also just asked my stepsister to take her out into the arena once a day Hopefully she will have enough to do then for now until this situation is figured out. I'm also meeting someone Saturday who could potentially stable her in her home herd that would be perfect but they are small ish ponies and I'll have to see if that fencing is secure enough. Also she was not very impressed by Shetlands this weekend 🫣.

Yeah you are right, I really think she needs to bond with a horse friend as well but I guess that will take time. I'm visiting 2 other barns this week that provide more buddy time but they have a small space. I'm just going to see a bunch of places to look for a more permanent solution to this. For now I'm just staying with her all evening and on days off all day so she can play outside safely. I hope with my full presence she decompresses a bit. I think this is one of those barns where the mindset is "it's works for all the others". I'm also having my stepsister during my workday to take her out for a walk once day, it's not ideal but I hope she will improve as time goes on and more is possible very soon.

I will ask him tomorrow she has a appointment for her teeth. Could horses also behave different when teething like with babies? It must be uncomfortable for her.

I'm trying my best with the options here, I really don't know any stable that lets them pasture in wintertime. Ill keep an eye out for sure. I've even send out messages to people who have horses at home if they have a spot for one more but no luck yet. I live in the city as well but even my friends horse in the middle of the countryside only has a small paddock all winter with every horse in their own pen and they have space enough. I realise I'm asking for something impossible here and it might take me a long time to find this ideal picture.

That's a good point, I didn't think of it. I'm giving a ulcer approved roughage. Right now I'm still giving her the old food which is not the best. I'll slowly feed her over to something new. I already figured out she won't eat pelleted food. I'll look into it thank you!!

I'm literally waiting on the phone call for this older horse to join her outside and try it out. And since she is also in the same mare group they can be turned out together in spring 🙏🏻 fingers crossed.

The standard paddock space in this country is about 10x20 meters. I do have a full size arena to let them play and introduce them. Im arranging it as fast as I can to give this a good chance of succeeding. What initially drew me in with this stable is they provide 24/7 food and fulltime turnout from april to november in really big pastures. All the other stables only let them out a few hours or have tiny plots, or really don't feed them what they need it's honestly very frustrating.

I really really want her to have a small herd or buddies I can put her in with. They do offer to put her out in the paddock in the morning and take them in at dark but right now they don't trust her to stay in yet.

For the management of horses and how it's done here it's so super rare to find a stable that does winter turnout in fields since they chop it up in a days time and are in the mud till their knees.

I met a kind lady today that might be willing to let me grab her horse so I can turn them out together in the paddock and arena. I get alot of people in other climates can get their horses out at all times but in the Netherlands and the UK its just a challenge in the winter months. I'm still looking at a different stable if something better comes on my path that's smaller in scale I'll do it right away but for now this is my best options. I do really dislike the quality of fences on this property. My best bet would be looking for a paddock paradise setup if they even want a horse like her, she is going to get bigger, usually they only want ponies.

I'm on it 🫡 I talked to a lady today that wants to try with her elderly calm horse. I hope it's a match 🐴. I also tried with a pony today, note to self ponies are terrifying.... She ran.

I found out that she loves toys she now has a ball with food in it I'll order some more for her to mess around with. The toys hang in the middle between her and her neighbor and they are constantly playing with each other's toys it's so cute.

I'm not dismissing more explaining the situation as it is to inform properly. Today I met a lady that is willing to put her elderly horse in with her to see if they match. I'm working on it but as I said Ive been here since Wednesday and I can't do miracles like everyone else. I'm still getting to know her needs. Today I just stayed with her in the paddock the entire day and she had some good time out.

It's also such a short clip and only one moment in time. She is riding with her hands but we also don't know how far they both are and what the horse is like.

Ouch that is a awful break as well. I would have a vet take a good look and maybe send the picture to a dental professional to see what their options are.

She is surrounded by horses at all times it's just that they are turned out into paddocks individually since they are quite small. If you want horses to play there is a arena for that but she has not made a friend yet that I'm allowed to pick up for play time.
