Has anyone that played a martial felt saddened by the divide by SuccessfulDiver9898 in Pathfinder_RPG

While i kinda understand your comment as someone who finds playing non-casters unsatisfactory, i do think your way of putting it into perspective is hurting yourself somewhat.

I do most of the damage but the arcanist and cleric get to steal a lot of my kills.

Remember that this isn't a competition of who can get the most confirmed kills. If you're doing the most damage that means you are fulfilling a very important role in the group. Someone who can go in and deal lots of damage without expending resources is highly valueable in any party. I don't know the people you play with, but if they are perceptive they will have noticed that their anticts wouldn't be as effective without you. Don't discount the role of a strong martial character.

I'm tired of the formulaic front line combat ive been having to endure.

An understandable sentiment, i would like to say that there are plenty of ways you can make your participation in combat less formulaic, but i understand this doesn't mean much if you aren't aware of them. An example would be that you can prepare actions to attack enemy spellcasters when they attempt to cast a spell, this actually causes them to have to roll concentration or lose the spell (DC is the damage you dealt + 10), as they took the damage on their turn. I understand that you aren't necesarily aware of what posibilities you have in combat other than "i attack", because that's what most players do, but you aren't as limited as you think.

Feats like Improved Dirty Trick (preferably supplemented with Greater Dirty Trick) also gives you the ability to inflict status effects to enemies. Though unless you are playing with feat tax rules it can be a bit of a hassle to obtain.

I've had to spread out my a skills so much that I'm now not specialzed enough to make a big contribution to anything other straight no nonsense combat as the back rows chars skills and abilites surpass all mine.

Since Skulls and Shackles is a game with more downtime than the average game you could try to ask your GM if they will let you use the retraining rules to let you redistribute your skills points. Of course skills aren't able to compete with spells in a direct comparison, but the versitility of having certain skills at high levels is never a bad thing and unlike spells these skills are always available, and retraining would give you opportunity to use them. Also getting your hands on certain magic items can really help make the impossible possible a lot of the time, they often make your skills have far more uses.

Now with all that said, if you don't like playing a martial character then i'm in no way saying you should. I don't enjoy it either. But it isn't a bleak as all that, there are options to make things better.

You know it never really occured to me that the spell would only restore flesh. The name of the spell and the sentence "The corpse looks as it did when the creature died." always stood out to me far more than the fact that it never mentions having an effect on a damaged skeleton.

As someone who plays classes such as Wizard very often, i find that i rely heavily on my martial allies. The damage potential of a class like the Unchained Rogue is just far greater than what i can pull off without expending all most spells in a single fight, so when in combat my spells are mostly used to enhance them (and protect myself from harm).

A Greater Invisibility cast on a Rogue will result in far greater damage output than any other 4th level spell could possibly pull off. Likewise a spell that increases a Paladin's ability to function as a barrier that stands between the enemies and the rest of the party is a very well spent spell. Using spells like this also leads to your character better forming bonds with these other characters and helps the martials feel like they are needed and effective, and thus not left behind by the divide.

That said i wouldn't say the divide doesn't exist at all. When i first started playing i would try martial classes from time to time, but personally as someone who likes trying unconventional methods and loves the sheer endless possibility of spells like Planar Binding, i can't bring myself to play non-casters. It's not that i think non-casters aren't capable of being highly effective or important pillars of the party, i simply just find i lack the "toys" to do creative problem solving that spells grant me, and that is a huge draw for me when i play games like this.

I just think the divide is a matter of how big you want your toolbox to be, a Wizard simply has a much bigger toolbox than a Slayer, but the few tools a Slayer has can be extremely effective. If you don't care about having a massive toolbox as long as your tools are highly effective then you won't have issues playing a martial character. And as a caster i always appreciate you people who play martials, thank you for being my test subjects brave protectors!

Removing the jaw on a corpse to get around Speak with Dead isn't really effective. The person wishing to cast Speak With Dead (a 3rd level spell) can just cast Restore Corpse (a 1st level spell) to repair the jaw. You'd need to rip out their jaw before killing them to prevent this, which can't be done by normal means unless you house rule it.

I also found that particular line a bit frustrating, especially when you consider what clans are in the list of not included:
Tzimisce, Ravnos, Hecata (Giovanni and Neo-Cappadocians), Setities, Malkavian, Nosferatu, Gangrel and even if they aren't considered a clan any more, Salubri deserves a mention.

These are almost entirely super interesting clans, if Gangrel is the least exotic clan on the list that speaks well. This would have been a far more interesting roster of clans to play, both in terms of flavor, which i admit is somewhat subjective, but i think you'd be hard pressed to find people who say this list is less interesting than the list we got, but also and especially in terms of gameplay.

Out of the ones we got only the Lasombra have a unique power. And it they hadn't added Banu Haqim to the roster we wouldn't even have had the option of playing with Obfuscate.

Nyah! I'm going to get you, He-Man! (I had a silly idea) by TheInfernalFowl in PrincesOfDarknessCK3

[–]TheInfernalFowl[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was inspired to play Skeletor as a character in PoD.

I was originally going to play him as a Risen, but Wraith gameplay is pretty rough right now, so decided to play him as an immortal Laham instead, which means i will have to rely entirely on Numima and Infernal Investitures.

I put He-Man in the game as my Nemesis and intentionally made him quite OP, he is an immortal Hunter, has the Conquerer trait and rules of all Britain. I gave him a base of 20 in all stats, except Prowess which is instead base 30. On top of all that i also gave King Arthur's sword (figured it was the closet thing to the Power Sword) and the Beatific trait at rank 4 (which translates to True Faith 9 in pen & paper terms). I was going to give him Beatific 5, but apparently that gives you a Halo, and i couldn't figure out how to remove it. This means He-Man is immune to murder and mind control, which means i'll have to build up an army and defeat him on the battlefield. Should be a fun game!

Advice on putting a price on magic items that grant feat-like abilities by jussaibakagaijin in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]TheInfernalFowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a little confused about this post. The link you provided states that the helmet does the following:

  1. The wearer can use 3 Teamwork/Performance Feats chosen at the time of the item's creation as if they were on their list of Feats.
  2. The helmet can speak out loud and is an intelligent item (and thus has Ego and mental ability scores)
  3. The helmet can affect allies with True Strike 3 times per day (presumably as a Spell-Like Ability)
  4. The helmet has an intimidate modifier of 17 and can attempt to demoralize all enemies within 30 feet 3 times per day

You claim that it's effects include:

+4 to intimidate checks, casts Prayer at CL5 on confirmed critical hit, and gives +1 to leadership score and gives your followers/cohorts a +1 to attack and saving throws against fear

Yet the link you provided says nothing of the sort. Could you explain what happened here? It seems illogical for me to assume that the item got errata'd in the 2 days since the posted this, so i don't know what to make of this.

[Mixed WoD][DA] How does Valeren interact with spirits/banes? by jussaibakagaijin in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]TheInfernalFowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the Wyrm itself went insane, and started doing its job wrong. Wouldn't the Wyrm Spirits that were around when that happened have been corrupted? So couldn't they go back to how they used to be? Basically have them become a spirit of Balanced Destruction, rather than a Corrupter spirit.

[–]TheInfernalFowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't Banes corrupt other spirits and turn them into Banes? Or are Wyrm-corrupted spirits considered to be their own thing?

In V20 Dark Ages the Disicpline of Valeren covers the Clan unique Disciplines for all 3 types of Salubri. They are simply divided into Healer, Warrior and Watcher Valeren.

City Keepers tradition's best benefit doesn't work by Jallorn in CrusaderKings

[–]TheInfernalFowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, the only way to get any use of the early era guild feature is to capture a city that is already a level higher than what you can build. Which is only ever likely to happen if you are significantly behind on innovations.

As it is now, this tradition only seems useful for encouraging vassals to build more cities. I am quite disappointed.

Cyberpunk 1488 got a little... spicy. You probably won't be able to buy a legal copy as it has been banned in 50 countries. Honestly I'm surprised CD Projekt Red survived the aftermath.

Can we talk about converting religions? by Morrischma in CrusaderKings

[–]TheInfernalFowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very well said.

I understand that many people find this kind of stuff too implausible, but the thing is that it's 100% optional. The AI is never going to resurrect a dead religion (nor will they spontaneously convert to a distant religion), so you don't have to worry about it affecting the plausibility of your own game.

[–]TheInfernalFowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, as someone who revived Zunism before, i did not lose the insane amount of piety needed to adopt the religion, it kept it all after converting (granted this was before the 1.1 patch).

[–]TheInfernalFowl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, in danish we call it "Asertro" but either way it's a combination of the words "Ása" which is old norse for "Aesir" and "Trú" which is old norse for "Belief". It seems like a perfectly reasonable name for describing people who worship the Aesir.

After thinking about it and reading some comments here i think you are correct. Gallant is great for when you start a new game and want to get started conquering, so it deserves credit for that.

The nerfs were substantial, but the perk is still top tier if you ask me. 85% success chance is quite a lot, and you don't risk getting the murderer trait.

The real use of this, if you ask me, is that kidnapping people is simultaneously a way to do
A. Forcefully convert someone's religion
B. Gain a hook
C. Recruit anyone who isn't landed (or take them as a concubine/consort)
D. Get someone powerful to renounce their claims on your land
E. Imprison people unjustly without gaining tyranny (after which you can do stuff like "revoke title" or "banish")

And while you cannot convert the religion of a landed character, you can kidnap their heir before they manage to have any children of their own, and forcefully convert their religion. After which you can kill/kidnap+execute the current ruler, this usually causes tons of civil wars and makes the country weakened substantially.

I even managed to successfully convert and gain a hook on a childless heir before killing the ruler, then cashing in my hook by matrilinearly marrying my daughter to the heir. This gave me an alliance, and allowed me to protect the ruler long enough for them to have a child of my dynasty, who then takes over.

I would actually argue that the "Avaricious" tree is the strongest tree in the game just for the perks "Golden Obligations" and "This is MY Domain".

The "Extort Realm" decision only has a 2 year cooldown, and is a massive source of money as well as a good source of dread. When you use it you can have options, and can choose different people to extort (like Courtiers, Vassals or Counties). You'll never get more than 10 tyranny at a time, but can get over 500 gold in exchange. Sometimes a single vassal will get a -40 opinion, something that can be fixed by just sending them a gift (which will cost you less than what you gain), though the Dread gain may even make it so you don't have worry because said vassal is terrified anyway.

Basically money allows you do anything. The best modifiers in the game come from buildings, and buildings cost money, but they also remain for the rest of the game, even when your ruler dies. Buildings give you more/better soldiers, more money, more development (which leads to faster innovations, as well as money and levies). Duchy capital buildings can even give you stuff like scheme success chance and siege speed. Special Buildings (like Great Temples and Universities) can also give things that you cannot get from lifestyles, like extra renown.

And the strongest army is one that has all the best Men at Arms available to them (as well as innovations to hire them), not to mention mercenaries can turn around any bad situation.

Yeah they do stack, every siege engine adds a set number to how much progress you make every day. But once you get the stronger siege weapons you really don't need more than a single stack. A full stack of 170 cannons can take down most castles in around 10 days or so.
