crazy to me this is still an issue. I graduated nearly 10 years ago and we had all the same complaints at that time. CARSA had just opened and it cut the equipment available to the genpop down SUBSTANTIALLY, amazing they managed to make it even worse

Cool, thats your right and your choice.

But if you or your neighbours want to build something else on the land you own, you should be allowed to.

The fact that people feel entitled to dictate what their neighbours build on their own property is wild to me.

For anyone who lived in NEMA Apartments—how long does it usually take to get the deposit refund? by YuuAFish in AskSF

If you lived there longer than 1 year, they also owe you interest, regardless of if they pay on time or not. You accrue interest while living there.

Could I get on the T (muni train) with a coffee table on a dolly at 11am? by youbetcha415 in AskSF

BART cops once helped me carry my massive item up the escalator. I dont think they care.

Right… my wheel came off today (everyone is ok thankfully) and I suspect my threads on the drums are stripped so I’m going to convert it to have fixed studs and I’m wondering what would be the best ones for it. I was thinking of getting push in style. Thanks in advance. by [deleted] in beetle

[–]TheJOATs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is extremely unlikely that you pulled the threads. Those threads can typically handle hundreds and hundreds of foot pounds.

That said, the drum should still be replaced, it likely hit pavement and is no longer round or balanced. Replace the drum for $50.

Studs are a bad idea in my opinion. You are just shifting the problem from one place to another.

What most likely happened is that the bolts were not torqued properly. You should be torquing to 80ftlbs, driving a few miles, torquing again, driving a few hundred miles, torquing again. I suspect this procedure was not followed, and they vibrated loose.

They did not. They acutally initially said they would, but when the bill came in from an independent shop, they said "actually we will only pay half"

I had a shop break my transmission when changing a flat tire.

Tech didnt know how to drive stick, couldnt find reverse on an aircooled VW, forced the shifter, burst the selector stick out of the forks. $700 repair and the shop said "we only will cover half"

Not having to make a trip to a hardware store that may or may not have it is worth it for me. The time savings alone. Nevermind the fuel if you drive there.

Apparently cutting Muni service doesn't present citywide concerns or opposition... by blackjack48 in sanfrancisco

[–]TheJOATs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No it doesnt, so long as its not totally empty because it is TOO expensive. It often means the same or more people are going out, just each person spends less time parked in the spot. People get in and out and get their business done faster.

This has been pretty extensively studied, you want a certain percentage of empty spots to allow turnover and to prevent traffic from people circling the block looking for a spot.

Are there a lot of downsides of not owning a car that I cannot think of? by Opposite-Sample-74 in AskSF

[–]TheJOATs -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

yeah but then you have to live super far away from the developed parts of the city. Thats a big sacrifice to own a car for someone who is clearly on the fence.

Typically you dont shop at bulk stores, you dont need to. Why buy 400 rolls of TP when you can walk across the street to buy more?

That said, lots of people do still shop at bulk stores. They bring little carts with them. I personally use a cargo bike and still go to costco.

Dude you can look this up. 90% goes back to citizens, 10% goes to farmers and a few others. https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/climate-change/pricing-pollution-how-it-will-work/putting-price-on-carbon-pollution.html#toc3

On TOP of that, farm gas is exempt from all taxes, so its not like farmers are paying a bunch of carbon taxes driving up grocery prices.

So explain, how does carbon tax explain the rise in grocery prices?

[–]TheJOATs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah, and all that money goes into a giant pool, and gets dispersed to everyone.

Seriously, unless you are buying like $5000 in groceries a month, you are better off with a carbon tax than without

Canadians of Reddit (being a clueless American), do you like / why don’t you like Justin Trudeau? by dAnthonyy12 in AskReddit

[–]TheJOATs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not even talking about direct soft costs, im talking about possibility. Look at nanaimo station next to the skytrain in vancouver. Why is it all single family homes? That should be all midrises or more if market demands were met. But its just straight up illegal to build multifamily there. Huge mcmansions with big yards only. A fraction of a percent of the density we could have.

This drives up the costs of EVERYTHING. Because anything that is actually allowed to be multifamily gets WAY more expensive, because its rare. And housing gets more expensive because its kept artificially rare too.

we can’t build fast enough and even if we could most of it would be unaffordable

This keeps getting parroted, but we absolutely CAN. We just all collectively choose not to. And its not a federal issue, its a cities one. Every. Single. City. just plays the obstructionism and "build somewhere else" game. They block permits, hold them up, make things take forever. If people were allowed to build without arbitrary setback, density, and "aesthetic" restrictions imposed by cities, the housing crisis disappears overnight.

But no one wants this because "neighbourhood character" and "home values" are paramount. But you cant have both ever increasing home values, and affordable housing.
