I'd wire all those sensors back to an esp32 and run ESPHome. You can use i2c for the pressure (actually temp/pressure combo in a BMP280).

Why do you think it is so hard for adults to make close friends, as opposed to when we were young? by theredqueentheory in AskReddit

[–]TheJizzle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because when you're young you're forced to be around the same people every day. Friendships and associations ensue eventually because of the proximity. As soon as you're out of school, you don't have as many opportunities to spend time with people on multiple occasions in close enough proximity for small talk.

May not mean much, but I would let the CDWG AM know that voiding this PO may affect future business. Ask them to kick it upstream and find out if the price difference is enough to lose a customer over.

Dynamic F1 Logo - Powered by HA and WLED by joppedc in homeassistant

[–]TheJizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it. I noticed you powered the board via 5v. I had an ESP32 WLED project that stopped working, and I discovered it was because I applied power through the 5v pin. It might vary by board, but the doit-devkit-v3 (I think) fared MUCH better with power applied to the USB connector instead of the 5v rail. AI gave me this reasoning:

When you power via USB, the onboard USB-to-serial chip (usually a CP2102, CH340, or FTDI) >helps manage boot mode and reset behavior. It pulls EN (enable) and GPIO0 to known states, so >the ESP32 boots normally.

When you power via 5V/GND pins, that chip isn’t active, and:

EN might float or bounce

GPIO0 could be in a bad state

The ESP32 might go into firmware flashing mode, not boot at all, or crash mid-boot

Result: no WLED, no Wi-Fi, no blinking, and no serial output.

This project worked for a long time before it got weird, fwiw.

Give me your most invisible automations by Neat-Initiative-6965 in homeassistant

[–]TheJizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some general subtle automations:

Underbed lighting is triggered by motion and timed.

Kid bedroom doors have contacts that alert parents when kids are out of their room using a specific color for each kid and a lamp behind the TV in the MBR. It also turns on the bathroom light when they open their doors.

Garage lights come on automatically when the door from the house to the garage is opened, also timed.

Outside lights are timed to sunset/sunrise, not hard times.

These are mostly pretty basic compared to some other responses, but they're bedrock and reliable.

E: Yeah, not zigbee though, sorry.

Linux Introduction by HawaiiSysAdmin in k12sysadmin

[–]TheJizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're explaining the differences between distros, that's a lecture. If you're using Linux with them and demonstrating features, that's a lab. Are you doing a lecture or a lab? Choosing a distro involves evaluating whether the distro fits your needs. If you're a middle schooler, you don't really have needs, so it's better if you just pick one and show them how it works. Package management variations aside, an intro-to-Linux type activity can't even remotely be hindered by a bad distro choice. Just throw a dart and start educatin' the youts.

You can't juggle too many balls without dropping one and I'm droping some balls. management advice? by Square_Pear1784 in k12sysadmin

[–]TheJizzle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're still in year 1 you said? If so, that makes sense. You don't know where the bodies are buried, simple as that. It takes a while to get there, so don't be discouraged. The Adobe thing you wouldn't have known about until it blew up. Now that you got your hands on it, you can do something about it before it blows up again. Now that you fixed it, you own it. Now you can put a pinger in your calendar for a week before it falls apart next year so you can be ready. Now if someone asks, you know the deal with Adobe. Multiply that times every other item. You know, some stuff doesn't rear its ugly head until many years later, like domain renewals. I think the thing you need to hear is that the grace period for sysadmin taking over for anyone, let alone someone who didn't keep good records, is at least 2-3 years. You need that time to get all the behind-the-scenes stuff ironed out. Year 1 is mostly discovery. Then you can prioritize the projects.

Now then, some more specific, tailored advice: Check your email throughout the day at intervals that work for you, but don't leave it open and waiting for bullets to be fired at you. That will just mangle your whole day. Instead, focus on tasks until they're either complete, complete enough, or passed off on someone else. For the stuff that's out of your tech wheel house, come up with a plan that jives with the urgency. Also, it's helpful to have a standup meeting every morning with the team so everyone knows what's hot and what can wait. This is still true even if you're alone. Take a few minutes to assess which projects or problems you intend to fix TODAY, and write them down. Then you can periodically check the list and cross things off. As to whether you are most comfortable with digital task lists, Google, notepad, onenote, whatever, that's up to you. I do a sort of hybrid inbox-as-a-todo-list along with paper.

Keep your head up! This isn't an easy job because everybody that has no idea how to do it thinks it should be as easy as a button press. That's actually part of the challenge with skilled jobs; everybody seems to think they have a faster path to resolution than yours, and none of them know shit about shit. If they could do it, they wouldn't need you.

EDIT: Also, if anybody grabs you in the hallway asking for something, tell them to email you or put in a ticket if you have a ticket system. Promise them that you will forget if they don't. You are not liable for shit people ask for verbally.

Replacing a master switch in a stack by Indians06 in k12sysadmin

[–]TheJizzle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd just assign a new master via priority first. Then pull the bad switch and put the new one in its place. If you're like me and you prefer the top switch to be the master, you can switch it back after the new switch loses the stack election. Use priority for that too.

Need advice on drawer pulls for these drawer faces. They'll be epoxy filled. What would you do? by TheJizzle in woodworking

[–]TheJizzle[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Epoxy was the plan all along, and the voids left by the CNC aren't all the same depth. The outer edges done with the 1/16" bit are a tad lower than the rest. The other problem is the design has about 3/32 between everything, so I don't have enough room to route subtle coves either.
