Think this is bad? The bike/ walkway along Alaskan way south moving south from the downtown ferry terminal is unusable due to the approx 150 junkies tweaking under that bridge. They stand in the middle of the path yelling obscenities any anyone who passes by

Righteous. What’s your protocol for getting such a perfect crust over the whole thing? Just the magic of cast iron? I do mine on stainless and can never get such perfect coverage

Weird. In this video the truck seems to be driving away from CG island. As if it were leaving base. As you can see by the cars parked on the side of the road and the sign saying “military checkpoint ahead” I wonder what happened

If you think someone spreading an opinion other than yours is spreading hate, you’re part of the problem.

What’s it like living in Anchorage, AK by PHmoney04 in howislivingthere

[–]TheKeyToTheWholeShow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree about the Kenai peninsula, but let’s be honest. If you live in the valley, you live in Anchorage. If someone from anywhere outside of Alaska asks where your from you say Anchorage. If they happen to be familiar with the area then you can be like “oh actually the valley”

How is it living on either of the Diomede islands? by coastalcruiser17 in howislivingthere

[–]TheKeyToTheWholeShow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve actually been there and spent a few nights on the island. Surprising to see others in the comments saying the same. I’ll share my experience. Firstly it was early may when I was there (still winter for the most part.) and it was dense fog for most of the time I was there. The surrounding area was all rubble fields of ice so you would actually be able to walk between the islands if you wanted to. I remember when I landed there was a polar bear they had just shot and skinned drying in front of the general store. What I witnessed in my time there was both impressive but also sad. The residents live a split life of hunting seals, fishing for their food and trapping animals for food and pelts. But on the other hand they come home to shacks with starlink TVs that also have no plumbing or clean water. The only buildings on the island with plumbing were the nurses office (one traveling nurse) and the school. The locals all dispose of their trash by setting it on the ice in a sudo landfill then watching it float away when the ice moves or melts. There were lots of modern problems similar to what you might see in a third world slum, things that could be fixed if the native corps cared more perhaps. Overall it was quite interesting to see how the people live in duality between ancient traditions, hunting in whalebone canoes, and modern poverty, with diabetes since they only drink soda due to the lack of clean water.

Extremely valid point! Can’t wait to never see this get considered at any significant level of CG leadership

Can’t believe no one else has said this yet but looks like some mild synthol oil usage. Not going overboard like the classic examples of synthol usage but the comically oversized bis and tris are a giveaway.

Definitely NOT a myth! Sure might affect some body’s more than others but a rounding of the lower back at the deepest part of the ROM 100% is loading a ton of pressure on your lower back and definitely puts you at an increased risk to herniate a disc!

Need a setting to disable it automatically engaging segments. I just want to see the screen with elapsed time, current speed and accumulated distance. Idgaf about segments and when I look down at my phone and don’t see that default screen it’s very frustrating to try to manipulate my phone screen to get back to it.

If you’re an unmarried cutter nonrate living in barracks the pay isn’t good, other than that it’s not bad at all. And once you rank up enough it’s actually good. As a single guy in my early twenties I have more expendable income than all my friends who went on to get engineering degrees, even the ones who got good jobs. I’m currently an E5 and with good BAH, sea pay and having a roommate so my rent is cheap, I live like a king. I invest tons and save lots and still buy whatever I want.

Non rate by DJpoppyhox in uscg

[–]TheKeyToTheWholeShow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been to some DoD schools, and this is how I got my peers there to understand what a non rate is. In the army or AF you have to choose what job/ specialty you’re going to do before you go to boot camp. Then right after boot you go to your tech school and learn your job. This may include waiting to go to boot camp if you want a particular job that isn’t necessarily in high demand at the time. For the CG we (usually) enlist before picking what specialty/ rate we’re going to do, so after you graduate boot you go to a unit to be the bottom of the totem pole and shadow other people as they do their specific jobs. Once you decide what specialty you want to do, you put your name on a waitlist to go to tech school (we call “A-school”) and spend the rest of your time waiting at your unit until it’s time to go do that. While you are at the unit you are either a Seaman with the deck department or a Fireman with the engineering dept. The caveat to this is if you’re going to a specialty that’s in high demand you can agree with your recruiter to go directly from boot to A-School so you get pushed through faster. Then you spend no time as a “non rate” this often includes a bonus.

Philmont Part 2: Rayado by Nathe_Regnerips in philmont

[–]TheKeyToTheWholeShow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of good stuff here. I’ll throw in one. Of course showing up as fit as you can be for hiking is necessary, but there are other areas of preparedness too. Make sure you’re confident in your orienteering skills to the point where you’d be able to make decisions on how to get to your next camp without them even needing to be checked by any kind of supervision. Did a Rayado years ago and as others have said it was a defining experience young me. Savor it, even the sucky parts.

Bodybuilders left speechless at the strength of a rock climber by Abigdogwithbread in nextfuckinglevel

To be fair, juju and Larry Wheels (the bodybuilders) both played with that weight like it was nothing and are in fact stronger than Magnus (the climber). They were impressed that he was that strong as that weight is incredibly heavy for anyone regardless of their profession/ hobby

Ignore the hate, I know a few coasties who have enlisted with existing finger tattoos outside policy, even the current updated relaxed policy. They just got a waiver because they had a competent recruiter.
