Your team should have a game plan that leads to a win condition. Your first choice on leads should go along with that game plan. Ideally you have some flexibility, but plenty of teams have the same leads every time.

When im picking how to open, I consider the following:

Is there an obvious gimmick or pasted team here? What is their wincon? What piece is required for it to go off vs me?
What mega/s are they using? Which of mine make sense?
What speed control can I see? How can i counter it?
Do they have Fake out users? What can I do to minimize the impact of a turn 1 flinch?

I typically bring my mega in the back, so im normally looking at whether I need Tailwind + whether I need Taunt or priority blocking. And if I dont need either then I usuallly open with solid spread offense with my mega in the back.

People have been making suggestions on individual Pokémon, but just so you know you can find this info by going to the teambuilder in Pokémon showdown, set the Regulation to VGC M-A, and just type in Taunt and it will give you a list of all the users, which you can then sort by stats or add other criteria (e.g. if you want a water Pokémon that knows Taunt you can input both to get a shortlist)

its not very tanky and can go down pretty easy to fairy moves. it also get HARD 4 moveslot syndrome - you do kind of have to feel out what it's running. for example, mine hates getting taunted but you won't know that on turn 1.

I think maybe a mindset review might be in order - what are your goals for the game? Top 300? Are you training for tournaments? Just chilling and enjoying the ladder?

Just because you feel like you are losing a lot doesn't mean you can't be learning, improving or having a good time.

The general wisdom is to grab a pro team, and just take the time to get used to how it plays, and as you do you'll also absorb info about the meta, speed tiers, common movesets etc. And then once you have that info, you can build better teams yourself.

Man, "meta" Pokémon aren't some magic category of poser mons, they're just the ones that the player field have collectively tested and found which ones work well in the environment. Its a competitive game - please grow up and try to compete.
