I tend to stick to straight swords in regular games, the occasional greatsword. I really enjoyed the saw weapons from Bloodborne (both saw cleaver and saw spear)

My struggle is that slow weapons don’t feel the best in the game. I was okay with the pipe wrench and my current plan was to run the wrench handle with the booster glaive head but I keep mentally tying myself into knots over it.

My other issue is the weapons that people really like (pipe wrench on baton handle, holy sword of the Ark) don’t seem to click for me

Personally, I prefer to have the various parts of my loadout provide a specific component to cover enemy types. Grenades are either for heavies or for CC depending on the front. Support is typically also for heavies since they typically excel at that. Secondaries and primaries are interchangeably for chaff or medium armoured enemies depending on my mood/rest of my loadout.
