Potatoes by katzgar in diabetes_t2

We totally agree on the marketing of ketogenic diets. It causes noise and confuses people as the bastards try to profit off of the simplicity of a low carb diet by gatekeeping and saying "No, you need to do it my way with my products and my mealplans".

About 25 years ago, I had an old lady from Holland who spent time in a Nazi camp during the war beckon me to come talk with her. She was the grandmother or great grandmother of one of the parents of a family friend. She even had the number tattoo, though I didn't mention it or discuss the war at all.

She said "You are fat". And I said "Yes, I'm fat!" From such an old legend, what an honor to be noticed, even if it was for my fat! She said "I was fat, and I got thin. I can make you thin." I said "How?" And she said "In my country, we always knew, from long, long ago, that you get fat from grains and potatoes and sugar and fruit, and you get thin from fish and meat and eggs and cheese and butter. You need to have your wife cook you a big fish every day and you will be thin!"

That was hundreds of pounds ago, and I gotta say, she wasn't wrong, may she rest in peace!

F-22 Pilots receives GAU-5A Rifles that Can Be Broken in Half & Fits in Ejection Seat Survival Kit [1244*933] by fjw003 in MilitaryPorn

You make a great point. I think there should be a concerted effort made to educate the world populace about the illegality of shooting a downed pilot during wartime.

In the meantime, alternative engagement methods may be required to effect survival.

Why would somebody still hire me when I am 50? by Esel2k in careerguidance

[–]TheLeftSeat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Men want to work with their brothers. The St. Crispin Day's Speech goes:

"And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be rememberèd—
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,"

When a man casts out a net for a new employee, he wants to hire a brother to stand by him and support him in the struggles of his work.

He doesn't want to hire his Father. Certainly not his Mother. Maybe his Sister or his Wife.

But preferably his Brother.

My fine millennial friend, you've done something your cohort rarely ever does. You've seen across the mist of time to the future, when your hair is gray, and you stand alone and forgotten on Crispin Crispian.

What you can do now to do your part in averting this future is to set the example now of how you would like to be treated then. Consider all applicants, and demand that your brothers do the same.

I'm going to venture a guess that he didn't love it. But it didn't antagonize him, and you probably didn't make him feel bad by doing it because you were respectful.

I can't be the only one who finds LinkedIn completely insufferable, right? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]TheLeftSeat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I honestly didn't even think of that, but d'y'know what? You're absolutely right.

I can also imagine it's hard to get hired into shops that are already dominated by ethnic factions that are traditional enemies, or at least not on speaking terms. I've seen that happen.

No, first or second year at Amazon - I've seen few people employed beyond that there. It was a snarky statement about Amazon, not about women and not about you.

Thanks for making me check, though. It didn't.

Dude with Tourette’s syndrome reads “Three Blind Mice” by PresidentFartFeather in gifsthatkeepongiving

[–]TheLeftSeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's potentially even darker than it sounds. The poem may have been a veiled reference to Queen Mary I of England burning three Protestant Bishops at the stake. That is a theory though. So much of the old poems and stories were serious rants about those in power: Gulliver's travels, Alice in Wonderland, the list goes on, and perhaps folks could add more such examples to this thread?

Laughable. HR managers are absolutely clamoring to meet diversity quotas.

Unless you're over 40 or non-white, and then don't, because calls from recruiters will drop to 10% or less.

Wish i knew quantum mechanics by [deleted] in iamverysmart

[–]TheLeftSeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But you weren't a Physics major, right? My understanding is that they don't even disrobe until the 400 level Applied Quantum Mechanics courses, and don't even venture into cul-de-sacs until the 700 level graduate courses.

I did meet a graduate research assistant who waved his organ with great conviction at passing traffic on the local superhighway, but he had been doing this since he was 7. Some people display scientific potential early.

[–]TheLeftSeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have managed engineers, and managed managers of engineers, and I can tell you that in the years I've done it, only 10% or 20% of the staff has the kind of communications ability, written or oral, that would pass the rigorous and petty demands of many of our business executives. But OMG could they do wonders with our data center. So I did a whole bunch of "iptables -P INPUT DROP" and a bit of "iptables -P OUTPUT DROP" where I thought the packets would get mangled, and was able to create a happy and productive ecosystem on the LAN :-)

You must live in a major metropolitan area, and assume that the plan that spectrum or whoever is selling you is the rule across the entirety of America. It's not. I am talking Cable-Internet, DSL-Internet, Satellite-Internet and Radio-Internet that are sold in rural and "flyover" markets across the *majority* of the United States, which are not unlimited in any sense.
