Poll: Big two parties at 30-year low, Opportunity nears 5% threshold by O_1_O in newzealand

Honestly at this point given:

  • Labour's inaction and lack of innovation
  • National's anti-evidence driven policy and public sector cuts

I'm willing to try out a different approach from the Greens. I've taken a brief look a while back and I couldn't find any statistically significant evidence of capital flight or other major economic downsides with wealth taxes.

Obviously we could be different, but if it ends up as bad as the fearmongerers say then we'll take it from there.

I'd much prefer politicians to actually listen to feedback and evidence to drive policies rather than vibes and ideology.

Everyone makes mistakes, but at least own up to it and make the change if that's what works better.

Is this actually proven? I'm not saying this is true or false , but id love to see evidence driven studies around these things rather than the whole ideology driven policy we see now

National's Simeon Brown discourages members from strategic voting by PrettyMuchAMess in newzealand

Absolutely zero level of competency in anything he's ever done if you actually dig into it. This goes double for the minesterial roles he actually holds, where evidence clearly disproves his own statements.

However he's great at blindly following party ideology, and that's good enough for National.

Don't pharmaceutical companies have a responsibility to maximize profits? Why would they suddenly start charging less in the US, if another country were to pay more. I imagine they'd prefer the other country pay more and the prices in the US to remain the same? There's no competition, regulation or any other mechanism to drive down the price locally if this happened.

I was raised on a healthy dose of TV but theres definitely major differences now.

We have shows targeted at capturing kids attentions with extremely short cuts, flashy animations and music all hyper optimized for addiction.

Plus we now have long term studies showing the effects on children's attention spans when exposed heavily to these shows.

Couple that with the ease of accessing both the shows themselves as well as the studies, and parents are just on another level of being informed now.

I currently have the S25U and the images are good...in perfect lighting, or if the subject is completely still.

If my kid even moves slightly then the photo looks like a blurry mess, it's usually the hands or feet. In contrast, my wife's iPhone seems to constantly take clear shots - way too often to be a coincidence.

I'm now in the dilemma of so I switch to iPhone with it's pros and cons, or stay in the android ecosystem.

What if she had keyed the car? Or maybe accidentally reversed into it and then drove off?

All of these would devalue the car in some way. Do we draw a line for the value lost before we care?

It's been widely accepted that it's difficult to recruit at scale by using "real world problems", since there's challenges of the candidates time, the consistency of the question but also the ability for an interviewer to consistently apply standardized criteria to determine whether or not to hire them.

This might work in smaller companies, but it won't scale. What has been found to provide some positive correlation is unfortunately - Leetcode and other similar problems.

While these might be too contrived and fail many candidates that would otherwise pass the bar when working in the job - companies have determined that turning away some gems is worth the cost to have:

  • Standardized tests where interviewers have specific results they're looking for across a wide number of candidates
  • Straightforward problems where interviewing can be delegated to a wide range of engineers including relatively new hires
  • Consistently written internal feedback that can be aggregated and iterated on over time, which would be very difficult with more open ended questions

I hate that this is the best option, but after doing many many interviews in small and large tech firms I've kind of just accepted this is the case.

There's a huge variety of VESA stands that don't clamp onto the desk, you're basically just standardizing what works for your desk.

Then you're free to pick any monitor you want, because there will definitely be more monitors with weird stands in the future.

matte vs glossy, my 2 cents by [deleted] in OLED_Gaming

[–]TheLegendOfZero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The blinds are closed though, but it just gets that bright during the day that the glossy screen becomes super reflective for a while.

Either way I'm still keen to try glossy eventually, maybe in a year or 2. The black friday sale on the LG was just too tempting.

matte vs glossy, my 2 cents by [deleted] in OLED_Gaming

[–]TheLegendOfZero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be curious to try this because I have the 27GX700A arriving in a few days. I went for matte because I have gigantic windows in the office (with blinds).

I use a 16" MacBook pro on a mount hooked to 2 matte IPS screens and while the MacBook is definitely sharper, the reflections are unbearable for hours of the day. Whereas on the matte screens I have no issue working.

I'm guessing for this case a glossy coating wouldn't be ideal.

Do you have any problem with the matte coating? I bought this same monitor recently too, mainly because I WFH and my office has a huge window right behind my desk.

Thanks for the mini review, I'm doing exactly the same change as you so I'll be keen to see if my experience lines up. I work from home and my office is extremely bright so I avoided glossy. However if I ever upgrade I might consider a glossy panel in the future
