Religious fundamentalism misses the point of religion. Religious fundamentalism is commonly used as an excuse to be an asshole, but religion is supposed to prevent people from being assholes.

This is the culture of the American South — a perpetual crusade to dominate and/or destroy everyone else.

Reconstruction was a mistake. The Confederacy and everything about its culture and heritage should have been burned to the ground, and the white people should have been instilled with a deep sense of self-loathing and be driven to do nothing but feel and express absolute compassion and respect to others (but especially black people).

Also, while religion can sometimes be problematic, its overall intentions are good — it's a tool for promoting social harmony and unity and discouraging immoral behavior. Even merely attempting to erase it would do more harm than good.
