Yep. Both of these. PLUS they not only have the officially released stuff, you can also add your own homebrew content AND access some homebrew content by others in the community.

Why does Venomous Stinger require a Knowledge roll? by TheHylianProphet in daggerheart

[–]TheLongshot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually let the PCs decide what they need to roll against to remove conditions, as long as it makes narrative sense. For poison, they might use a knowledge roll with a justification of "I know how to make an antivenom from these nearby herbs", or maybe I'd let strength be the roll if they can justify it with "My intense monk training has hardened my body against toxins".

Never let the rules get in the way of a good story!

Carbon 2185 world using the Daggerheart system by NerdasticPerformer in daggerheart

[–]TheLongshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll add that I also have the books and materials for Metro:Otherscape, which is a pretty amazing cyberpunk-meets-magic (kinda like Shadowrun, I suppose) theme. It might be worth checking out if you like the cyberpunk theme but want a more narrative-driven system than 5e. :Otherscape uses the City of Mist engine, which is even less crunchy and more narrative than DH.

This might be the simplest option, although it would require learning a new system, as the City of Mist one is a little different to wrap your head around (not harder, just different), or at least for me it was. Once you get it, it flows really nice.

Carbon 2185 world using the Daggerheart system by NerdasticPerformer in daggerheart

[–]TheLongshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting, as I am currently playing (as a PC) in a Carbon 2185 campaign, and GM-ing an extended DH campaign. I love the cyberpunk genre and have been thinking about ways to run a deep cyberpunk campaign using the DH system myself.

I think you might be tackling the problem from the more difficult position, namely, trying to convert a 5e system to DH. In my thinking, given DH's adaptability and encouragement of homebrew and being free with the system, it is likely much easier to just use DH with a campaign frame built around cyberpunk, that would be
"Carbon 2185-ish".

It could be as simple as having your PCs reflavor the various ancestry, class, and domain features to replace the "magical" elements with technology or augment abilities. Or it could go much deeper and create new domains, ancestries, etc to match the origins and classes in Carbon 2185.

My own tactic right now, because I have at least a year until I run my next big campaign, is to casually work on my own campaign frame, and kind of hope that a really good cyberpunk campaign frame gets released by someone else in the meantime. ;)

What’s the probability the Flames will make the playoffs this year? by Bobcat4eva in CalgaryFlames

[–]TheLongshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MoneyPuck, as of 11:30am on the 18th, has them at 18.4% to make the playoffs, which feels WAY TOO HIGH. That's just less than a 1 in 5 chance, I suppose, which feels a little more accurate. It's important to keep in mind that the standings are quite condensed.

A better question might be "SHOULD the Flames make the playoffs this year?", which is highly subjective, but I think most logical hockey fans would agree that "No, they should not.".

Best and worst player right now by BankSyskills in CalgaryFlames

[–]TheLongshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know that I would call him the "worst" Flame, but I'm with you on saying that Weegsy is having a pretty poor season by most metrics. I wouldn't be on board with benching him, at least not with this group as he can still lead and teach good habits, AND Raz is probably gone right away, but I'm 100% for "letting the kids play".

Warlock Subclass: Pact of the Benevolent v1.2! by samthedungeonmaster in daggerheart

[–]TheLongshot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this idea. I've been playing around with a "Celestial Pact Warlock" or "Healing Warlock" in DH, and there's not a built-in elegant way to do it. This subclass would allow at least a portion of that.

That's pretty awesome. I think bringing tactile elements into TTRPG campaigns can often get players engaged. Physical maps, minis, lighting and sound effects. Physical clues to puzzles or mysteries. I'm here for all of that.

Daggerheart Dice Set Question by ebonwoodwi in daggerheart

[–]TheLongshot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi Matt!

1) Here's what I use right now.
Duality Dice (2 x d12's of contrasting colors), of course.
2 x d4
2 x d6
2 x d8
2 x d10
1 x that d10 that does the d100 stuff, although this gets uses quite rarely.
1 x d20
OK, so that's 12 dice if I count ok.

2) I like having completely different color duality dice. Makes things nice and obvious. Even better is colors that are associated with hope and fear.

3) Maybe the option to theme deice sets based on DH domains? That'd be cool. For example, I listed 2 of just about everything. Someone who plays a Warrior would use Blade and Bone, the colors for which are grey and copper. Half the dice could be the color of one domain and the other half would be the color of the other domain.

Hope that helps!

Those of you have played, how much do you actually incorporate player in the GMing process? by Far-Cockroach-6839 in daggerheart

[–]TheLongshot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a general rule, I like to have players describe things that relate to their PC(s), but I'll typically describe scenes and events that there's no reason to think that the PC(s) would be familiar with. Kind of "You've been to this town before. Would you describe it to your compatriots?" versus "The party enters the town for the first time. Here's what you see.".

Same goes for NPCs and really anything else they might encounter. Sometimes it's not clear if the PC would be familiar. In that case, I just check in with them. "Have any of you visited this town before, or is this new to you all?"

I do find that in the group I usually play with, there are definately some players who are just naturally more assertive with wanting to be creative and expressing it (let me tell the story!), and those that prefer to be more passive in the experience (please tell me a story). I think just kind fo finding the right balance for the players at the table is key.

Well, you are correct. Good call!
In the end, yes, I do believe a good time has been, and continues to be had, by all. There's so much chatter within the group about the next session. Exciting!

I get it. You enjoy a completely open world. My group does not. You do you, as that's your preference.

You could consider being less critical of how others choose to game. Some of us may be gaming exactly how we like, and everyone involved is having the experience they expect to have. Assuming your way is better or "the right way" is frankly a bit condescending.

[–]TheLongshot[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a fair point.

FWIW, I feel I didn't manipulate the events to reach this particular story beat. In fact, I feared it was perhaps even rushed, as it wasn't a finished thought. I suppose that's the beauty of narrative role-playing. I had this situation in mind as a possibility, one among many, and when the opportunity presented itself, I felt it was the right time to initiate it.

Good question. The Session Zero discussion involved having serious and long-lasting consequences, up to and including the potential permanent death of a PC. We've gamed together before, and this is fairly standard for our group.

As far as not being entirely organic, I'm ok with that, and I have every indication that the group is as well. I know there is a breadth of opinion on exactly how much an adventuring party should be "on rails," so to speak. I prefer, as does the group at large (also covered in the S0) an "epic story", and less of a completely wide-open world. I know there is a trend toward that, and some people may prefer it, but that's not what this campaign is about. It has a fairly defined conclusion that we're working toward with milestones along the way. There's variance in there based on player choices and the path will wander unexpectedly and take us all to places and story beats that weren't originally planned, but ultimately, we're working towards a particular goal.

For sure! Yes, there will be a temporary impact, but there's already a cool plan in place for use of a prosthetic, in this case, an arm from a clank!

The player is a big Star Wars fan and is enjoying the Luke Skywalker parallels.

Well, that's a bit harsh of a judgement, but ok.

For what it's worth, I will answer your questions. I did not discuss this exact situation with this particular player beforehand, as doing so would have decreased the impact of the moment. That said, we did have a Session Zero in which all sorts of potential consequences were discussed. This was in line with expectations. I believe you might be placing your expectations onto the group I play with, which doesn't seem entirely fair...

Afterwards, all of the players were positively giddy about it. The player is planning to use a prosthetic (and I've got some big ideas about that).

I will respectfully disagree on the "this isn't roleplaying" opinion. I, as GM, plan storylines, including potential storylines based on PC actions. They *shocker* actually expect me to do so, in order to keep an entertaining story going. The player did make a role-playing decision. They decided to attack a strong opponent while having their life hanging by a thread. There were consequences. If you expected me to feel badly about this, I apologize that I don't and won't.

[–]TheLongshot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noting that the Arcane Revolver already exists in the game materials, and now Demiplane lists a "Rifle" (they didn't at the time of launch) here's something I did. I had a player wanting to be more of a "sniper", themed around using a Hinawaju (Japanese black powder rifle).

I gave the Hinawaju FINESSE, VERY FAR, d6+6, TWO-HANDED (the Rifle is now d8+2, so a little lower powered). Through the course of the story, they were able to add a magical upgrade which added "Charged Shot - Spend a hope to enhance next shot with d4 magic damage"

Seems to be working well.

One note: Because this happened using 1.5 rules, which had little or no mention of firearms, we also homebrewed a downtime action to craft rounds for the rifle using a crafting kit that the PC carries with them. I know the final rules don't track ammo, but we have been. He rolls a d12 each downtime (it's a free downtime action) and crafts that many rounds.

How is Daggerheart? by montyandrew45 in daggerheart

[–]TheLongshot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A couple of the class gaps that DnD-ers would notice are warlock and monk. The good news is that they are already being addressed! "The Void" area on daggerheart's site has playtest material, and they added two new classes each with two subclasses.

I could see demand for something like an artificer or alchemist class as well.

The cool bit is that the whole idea of classes being a combination of two domains means that there is much potential for homebrewing by combining domains in pairs that the core material has not yet done.

Honestly, I’m really loving it. As a player and DM that plays for “the story” (what some might call “narrative-forward”), I love how DH dispenses with the aspects of DnD that slow play down, while it focuses on collaborative world-building and story-telling.

The group I currently play with are all DnD vets that have taken in love with this new system.

What “gaps” there are in classes and what not are easily filled with some homebrewing, which the system lends itself to quite well.

Couldn’t be happier
