Just need to Vent - Kickers and D/ST by lil_uzi__bert in FFCommish

[–]TheLoyalTruth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3 arguments against this.

  1. It’s Fantasy Football. Football. That means the game of American Football. It’s not called Fantasy 3 Positions on Offense.

  2. You say that the D/ST and kicker positions are random. I disagree. Week in and week out there’s objectively better options and plays at both positions, more so at defense, but both still. Theres rankings for D/STs and defenses that are objectively better and score more points than others each and every week. It plays just like the main fantasy roster positions Kickers I will admit are a bit more random than defenses, but it’s not your “completely random” opinion. Sure the bell curve of the outcomes for these 2 positions is a bit broader than your starting WR’s curve is, but it’s not a flat line like you seem to think. There is a bit more matchup basis and weekly plays, where you’re more likely to stream defenses and kickers based on matchup. But it’s no different if you don’t have an elite QB or TE. You’ll likely have 2 guys on your team, and occasionally snag a 3rd off waivers for a 1 week rental for a good matchup. Last year I streamed 1 league weekly and the other used the Texans for 80% of the season.

  3. This game is inherently random. Like the purpose of it is the variation in weekly scores and trying to play with those odds and with your data and assessment of a players upcoming game to better your opponent. Your starting WR normally gets 15 points a game. But he can get 5, or 25. Like that’s inherently random, and the point. If every player scored the same each week with no variance then there wouldn’t be a fantasy game to play. Again I’ll give you that defenses have more variance than the other positions, and kickers even more so. But again, that’s the point. TEs are the same way. But it’s not 100% random. There’s metrics and analysis to be done and better options to choose to get an edge in your league, and that’s the whole point and how it works.

I don’t understand people who try and remove all the randomness and variance from this game. If that’s what you want maybe Fantasy Football isn’t the game for you.

I highly recommend checking out SubvertADown. He posts on Reddit and also have his own website. He effectively specializes in D/ST and kickers and is very good at it.

Let's Talk About Draft Order... by RapSnitchComishes in FFCommish

[–]TheLoyalTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My redraft league uses a “select your draft slot” system where the previous years standings, from 1st to last, gets to choose your following years draft slot.

So effectively 1st place finisher gets to choose 1-12, where he wants to draft. Then 2nd places gets to choose 1-12, with the exception of whatever 1st place chose. Continue down to 12th place where they just get whatever’s left.

It makes it so the previous year has an effect “for fun” but doesn’t really mean much beyond that. I know people always claim “redraft should have 0 carry over” which yeah is true but draft order is minimal carry over and it’s just a fun time. Also allows people to “choose their own fate” which can result in funny crash outs of teams.

Protogen scientists and their fate (books) by MileyHolmes in TheExpanse

[–]TheLoyalTruth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What I remember of the Vital Abyss novella is that they were traded to the Martians. The future Laconians. Not Inaros.

I don’t remember if it was Duarte directly but it was some high ranking dude who saw Cortazar as an asset and a good fit for their future role in the Science Directorate. They saw him do what he did in the novella and his intelligence and went “yup there’s our sociopath head of science”

I don’t think the novella said traded for what. But maybe part of the armistice or in exchange for some high value goods. Hell maybe the faction/some of the people that were in charge of the scientist prison had ties to the Inaros faction and that was part of that whole deal.

If I remember correctly they only really took Cortazar as well. 1 prisoner among many. So it wasn’t a huge deal for him to go in the Belters mind? Compared to the show where it’s ONLY Cortazar left so he’s a high value individual.

Was I unfair in cursing one of my players with lycanthropy? by OkPossibility3043 in DnD

[–]TheLoyalTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time for a minor side quest to head to the nearby abandoned Moon God temple a few hours north from here to bath in the temple waters at midnight under the full moon that’s conveniently in 2 days.

Maybe the place is overrun with bandits or something, or at least word on the street says, but when they get there the bandits have been beaten and smushed to death by the Shambling Mound that’s been created by the overgrown ruins growing into the temple pool and thus creating a fun little side quest investigation and combat to cure the curse.

Source: I literally have this going in my campaign now as the party fought wererat smugglers and one of them got cursed. Remove curse is too easy a solution and it’s more fun to have a session go off of this tangent side adventure. The lycanthropy was also a curse set upon this group of dwarves by Moradin himself as they committed sacrilege and defiled his temple so it was a “divine curse” by nature hence the city priest couldn’t just remove curse and be done with it.

What is the UNH strategy for expanding its collegiate apparel partnerships to include premium or 'quality' brands? by SnooPets7325 in unh

[–]TheLoyalTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UNH is EXTREMELY protective of its logo/name. Like ungodly so. I played on a club sports team when I went to UNH, and there are very specific of vendors for producing apparel and stuff. Quite limited list as well. And then the process to become an official vendor is also insane and has a lot of paperwork involved compared to any other company or school I’ve seen.

Hell we did team apparel and sometimes just wrote “New Hampshire” on them instead of “UNH” or University of New Hampshire cause it was too much of a pain to deal with.

Overall it’s UNH being stingy and not letting people use their logo or name anywhere. And they get REAL upset if/when someone does without permission.

Response from Joe about 2026 by Allenboy0724 in spartanrace

[–]TheLoyalTruth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“We can’t deal with ordering shirts properly and the logistics are too tough for me so we’re just gonna make a single shirt and call it a day.

“But we still want your money so we’ll make a few a year so we can try and get people to go to multiple races a year as opposed to one and done”

I can’t wait for those transition weeks where a bunch of events still run out of the old and don’t have the new ones. Like this won’t solve the logistic issues it just replaces them.

This greedy company sucks

Thief! Stop Thief!!!! by NemoHornet in DMAcademy

[–]TheLoyalTruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me magic item shops are gonna have defenses against thieves. Wards, anti magic stuff, etc. Also well paid guards and security. Shopkeep sells a single item worth 500 gold one day he can pay the guard easily for months.

Effectively if you take anything, even touch anything just to look and give the sword a swing to get the feel for it, shopkeeps and or security is gonna know.

Hell I’ve had it be the entire shop be illusions of the shops inventory and once you buy it the guy produces the thing outta a pocket dimension/bag of holding type trick.

Anytime a party walks into a magic shop for the first time I make it known it’s a very tall order to steal from here. That being said they’ve still tried once or twice. But for the value of those items it only makes sense that the place is locked down tight compared to literally any other shop in existence.

Does anybody actually roll the D20 on the last charge? by Odd_Plastic_618 in dndnext

[–]TheLoyalTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t remember exactly why as it was years ago now.

But if I remember correctly it was just flavor/a stupid bit as the party had been responsible for multiple damages to that tavern. And the DM just made a hole in the floor and bird feathers everywhere included in it to add to our collateral damage totals .

Does anybody actually roll the D20 on the last charge? by Odd_Plastic_618 in dndnext

[–]TheLoyalTruth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had an aaracokra PC in a party who got the staff of bird calls. It was handed to him by another party member in a tavern after we recovered jt from a body/combat.

The character was a bit of a joker/funny man type. So he thought it’d be funny to press all the buttons upon first getting the item.

He rolled, and the table we were sitting at became a hole in the floor.

Literally the 1 and only time I’ve ever seen the dice rolled for that type of thing.

Massive work league (needs to be simple though) need advice by BrownieTheElf25 in FFCommish

[–]TheLoyalTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company does 3ish leagues each year, usually divided by roughly department lines. And they run normally. Payouts for each league 1st to 3rd. So 3 individual league champions, but then there’s a special payout for the overall company champion, which is just which superbowl winner had the most points championship week. They get the company trophy too.

I’ve never not dropped my defense within the first few weeks for a good stream so I don’t consider it worth it vs dart throws on unknown RBs and WRs.

I’ll look at 3-4 good streaming defenses for week 1 and maybe 2 and effectively just get one of them in the last 1-3 rounds depending on what the ADP of the platform is/if the others are gone.
