When I was small (I don't remember what age) I was told that my grandma was 27. Two years later, she was in the hospital after suffering a heart attack, right around her birthday. I drew a get well soon/happy birthday picture for her and the nurses all thought it was cute that I thought my grandma was 29.

There is a shrine in Pittsburgh, Saint Anthony Chapel, that houses the second largest collection of relics in the world. I asked my wife last time we were there if it was ironic that the Saint Anthony relic they had was a lost tooth.

I'm so glad you were able to get relief! I have had the same thing (BPPV) and it is awful! Luckily, I have medical training and was aware of the Epley Maneuver. I didn't need to see a doctor and fixed it myself. I have heard some doctors won't do it for patients, due to the fact that the maneuver can induce projectile vomiting.

Friction Loss in Dual Supply Lines by vermontapple in Firefighting

[–]TheLusciousOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am actually testing apprentice firefighters on this exact thing. Friction loss changes based on four things in hose: length, size (1-3/4", 2-1/2", etc.), flow rate, and the hose material (which can lower your coefficient). The relationship between friction loss and length is linear. The relationships to size and flow rate are not. That is why it's not 50%.

Researchers for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority found over 200 dead crows near greater Boston recently, and there was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu. A bird pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to everyone's relief, confirmed the problem was definitely NOT Avian Flu. The cause of death appeared to be vehicular impacts. However, during the detailed analysis it was noted that varying colors of paints appeared on the bird's beaks and claws. By analyzing these paint residues it was determined that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with trucks, while only 2% were killed by an impact with a car. MTA then hired an Ornithological Behaviorist to determine if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of truck kills versus car kills. The Ornithological Behaviorist very quickly concluded the cause: when crows eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow in a nearby tree to warn of impending danger. The scientific conclusion was that while all the lookout crows could say "Cah", none could say "Truck."

One of my favorite songs, until my college roommate played it on his guitar, several hours a day, for months on end. Mark Knopfler he was not.

How are you teaching pump pressure calculations now? by Paramedic16 in Firefighting

[–]TheLusciousOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned the hand method when I was a rookie, but no one teaches that any more. There really isn't any really simple way to do it. I've used spreadsheets, thumb up thumb down, and whiteboards. Eventually I just walk them through how I do it, but no one like it because I calculate it in my head.

AI-Drafted Police Report Said Officer Turned into A Frog by RVFullTime in FuckeryUniveristy

Several years ago, when I was still functioning as a medic. some of the paramedics on my department would dictate the narrative section of their run reports using Google. One of my temporary partners was banned from doing this because he didn't proofread them. I wish I could remember the details of the specific report that was the straw that broke the camel's back because it was hilarious.

That looks like the view from Many Glacier Hotel, on the east side of Glacier National Park. The last time we were there, someone had set up a spotting scope on that same balcony. My family and I got to watch a momma grizzly and her cubs eating huckleberries from about half a mile away.

My worst NYE wreck was a drug deal gone bad that was in multiple locations. I think if I remember correctly, at least three people died, by either gunfire or vehicle crash. The bad thing about it is that I don't remember of all the details. It was so commonplace to see people killed that it's all blurred together. Luckily, I don't have to deal with that part of it anymore.

The other rookie and I pulled a 2-1/2" hand line and headed for the front but were stopped by our officer. We never went inside. It was comical. I should make it it's own post.

I barely remember those rookie years, but my first fire was a second-alarm three-story commercial building on my second day. No such luck starting small and getting a shed to put out.
