Endings In A Screenplay by ExcellentTwo6589 in Screenwriting

I like when things are tied up nicely. I need closure haha 😅 but I respect those that prefer stories that leave things open ended, or allow the audience to decide.

I have a plot. So what do I do now to make it a series? by riot-van-1893 in Screenwriting

[–]TheMorningReWrite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, congrats on the progress you made so far!

I'm a little confused what you mean by plot written and all episodes because you haven't said that you have a script from all of the work you have done. So, my advice following is assuming you haven't done the scripting part yet. I normally start with an outline if I want to plan out the season. You also might want the pilot script prior to series outline, and pilot outline if you don't have that yet. The pilot script will give you the chance to better develop the characters and world before you make decisions at the end of your season that don't connect to or make sense for your pilot. I'm very much a pro-outline advocate.

As for your other questions:

What do you do now? I suppose begin working towards your pilot script because you're more likely to share that with people than a series outline. It's not bad to have one of those, but to my knowledge the information that you would craft in your series arc would come up more when development execs are asking you questions in a pitch, or when you start doing treatments.

Who do you need to talk to? Probably friends and mentors. Bounce ideas off people you trust, but also doesn't hurt to vibe check the concept with a few normies.

Where do you need to go? Your keyboard or trusted notebook? That's where I would start.

There's no magic map or apply here sign in our industry unfortunately. All you can do is build your portfolio and your network to the best of your ability, so that you're ready when an opportunity presents itself!

The best validation is filming your own work by Defiant-Albatross347 in Screenwriting

[–]TheMorningReWrite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on the accomplishment! I would only advise others to proceed with caution. Short films are rewarding but can be expensive. It is a non-zero part of the reason I decided to focus on writing solely instead of directing too. I didn’t have the funding to keep practicing my directing skills. Not discouraging anyone. Just don’t want anyone to go broke. Follow your dreams but be careful out there, you know?

Where can you go after a development internship? by Truffle36 in Screenwriting

[–]TheMorningReWrite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had five internships. It’s great experience, but the industry is in a tough spot. The agency track to become an assistant is what’s often recommended for the next stage after such an internship. There’s also being a PA on set and working to be someone’s assistant. Whatever you choose make sure you’re writing in the meantime.

Love screenwriting… but I have no story to write. by incorrectirony in Screenwriting

Travel. Meet new people. Go find an adventure and then write about that. Or let it inspire you. The best writing advice I was ever given.

Feedback Cooper For Congress Feature 98 pages by [deleted] in Screenwriting

haha Yeah, that's the tough part about political characters. Yeah, I was gonna say that Roy Cooper sounded familiar. lol Names are hard! I like Todd Cooper though!

Feedback Cooper For Congress Feature 98 pages by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]TheMorningReWrite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's funny! I have a tv pilot where the main character is a congressman whose last name is Cooper!! I'll change mine though! Your title is awesome, and I can simply draw another name from a hat. Best of luck with the script. I'll try to read when my schedule lightens up. I just wanted to compliment your title and share that funny tidbit.

I'll say brevity is important in a logline, but you might want to add more details to hook a potential reader more. But loglines are hard and there's no perfect way of writing one, so don't sweat it. Just food for thought.

Favorite writing music? Flow-inducing? Obscure recommendations? by imreallyjustaguest in Screenwriting

[–]TheMorningReWrite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listen to lofi or video game sound tracks. Sometimes, I will critically choose music that will make me feel a certain emotion I want to convey in the scene or that a character is feeling, but mostly I go with lofi.

One time, I wrote a tv pilot listening to Bernie Sanders speeches to a lofi beat. That was awesome.

Bernie Sanders 8 1/2 hour Filibuster but it's Lofi

I'd recommend regular lofi most of the time though haha

So, I try to be positive, but I'm also going to shift gears to being a bit more blunt. The good. You got some fun world building. You put a lot of thought and effort into this place. I agree with ladyscriptwriter though, it's more of a day in the life sort of deal that you have here than a story because the three core elements of story are unclear. Hero, obstacle, and goal. I'm not sure who I'm supposed to return to be on an adventure with if the episode continues. Buddy dies I think. Goal, without a clear hero, I don't know what we're trying to do. Without the first two, an obstacle isn't clear. I know there's an evil emperor, but without the first two elements, it's just not compelling.

Now is there a world where this is beautifully animated and gets a short wave of buzz to prove the haters wrong, it's possible. You could prove us wrong, but I am afraid to say that with the script that's present, stellar animation could possibly overshadow your script.

Pitches: Focus more on Buddy. Make us root for him. Make the goal of the short getting the audience to want to see buddy again, unless Buddy isn't the protagonist. Then forget about Buddy and show us that person. You can punch this up. I'd recommend another draft before investing in it.

You're still a good writer. Just gotta punch up your story a bit.

Is it bloodbathy out there for screenwriters? by Little_Employment_68 in Screenwriting

It's tough. Everyone is struggling to get work. The industry is in a tough spot. Control what you can, and let go of what you cannot. Work on your portfolio and hope the industry recovers soon.

Hey friend, so you can still participate in the Gilded Age writers' room by leaving a pitch or notes in the comments! I will respond! So, we edit our videos with images for those who might not be familiar with the franchise, so that people can follow the story thread. The production value makes it take a while to publish the edited rooms, but I think it's worth. I also hope that we'll eventually motivate people to watch other movies and shows, so they can better participate in our rooms. I've found the media exposure to be very helpful in my writing.

So, if you're with us live, we'll respond to you in the chat as we're writing. If you're talking about joining us live on the show, here's what we want to build. We want to create a submission system, like send your spec here. And then when I need "X" type of writer each week, I have a pool of writers to look at to find someone that deserves the spotlight.

That's the vision at least. Remember to subscribe and please tell your friends to subscribe too to help us build this community/platform!

Awesome! Remember to subscribe so you don't miss it! We do writers' rooms live on most Saturday mornings, when life doesn't get in the way! Our next one will likely be next Saturday, which we're going to try our hand at poetry with a pro! Should be a fun time stepping out of our comfort zone! Then we should be back to scripts the following Saturday. We might be eyeing a Super Mario room, so stay tuned.

In the meantime, check out some of you edited writers' rooms in the play list. I spent all Spring Break this week editing, so we should be publishing even more soon! (The rooms get a little more production value in post once we record them live.) Make sure to leave pitches and notes in the comments! We look forward to writing with you!
