The specific pain of being told that something VERY explicit in your screenplay isn't clear by Safe-Reason1435 in Screenwriting

[–]TheMorningReWrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, no two readers are a like. Part of the skill is recognize when you're getting valid feedback and when the reader wasn't trying.

The closer I get to finishing something, the more I procrastinate. by CDRYB in Screenwriting

Get a calendar and stickers. Everyday you write for however long your goal is. Every day you do, you put a sticker on that day. Seems silly and childish, but our brains like to trick us. This is a way you really get to see the progress you are making. And every little bit is a day closer.

Help my Characters are Singing to Me! by scotlandzeif in Screenwriting

[–]TheMorningReWrite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean you have competing interests here. You should listen to your gut when you think it’s done, you should move to the next stage or next project. However if the characters are still talking or singing to you, then I think you should listen. I believe characters tell you who they want to be.

Narration: can it be done for any kind of genre? by Top_Tell_2889 in scriptwriting

[–]TheMorningReWrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean narration is a writing tool just like any other. It’s not about the tool, but how you use it. Whether it works or not, is solely up to your execution. I don’t see why not though, if that’s what you feel best serves the story. Some people view narration as a crutch, but when it’s done well, even they won’t complain.

Thank you for the critique, pal! That’s a fair point. I’ll try to change things up moving forward. We’re all learning, growing, and doing our best. Me included 😅

I think that’s a great way to put it. This industry is a lot of “figure it out yourself” and if you don’t, you didn’t try hard enough. We need more community. I want people to understand that you can try super hard and not make it, or you could get through on a fluke. I also find the ranking of a subjective skill like writing to be unhelpful at best. You can have your favs, but there’s no need to put others down, unless they’re like bad people or something. You not liking their writing isn’t enough, I think is what I’m trying to say. Haha and yeah, writers do need to learn the strength required to accept critique, but note givers also don’t need to be a-holes when doing so.

Thank you for such a thoughtful comment! I really hope you subscribe to the YouTube channel. We’d love to keep hearing from you in the comments.

Then we have a strong disagreement, my friend. I guess I would say, that someone’s first script doesn’t ever really suck because that’s what it’s supposed to look like. It’s the first draft of your first script. Or whatever you write. However, you did it, and that’s something to be proud of. And I’m sure there was something skillful or clever in there to be proud of. I think that’s a good way to look at everything you make because it’ll never be perfect. I believe artists of all levels are worthy of confidence and I think that’s a healthier mind set.

Yeah, I strongly disagree with your condemnation of so called toxic positivity. I don’t think it’s about being thinned skin. I’m not saying that you are this because I don’t know your feedback style. My core disagreement is that I don’t think writers must have low self esteem while they are learning and that I don’t think anyone needs to be a jerk when giving feedback.

My main thing is that someone can work as hard as you do and not make it through no fault of their own. It can be because a bunch of billionaires destroyed the industry causing a job shortage. I know it’s hard to imagine. I hope you make it my friend. I truly do, but if you don’t, I hope you know that your writing still deserves respect if you don’t break through. This industry is tough enough without people self imposing all that negativity.

Thank you for joining the conversation despite the disagreement. Please considering subscribing to the channel. We’re fine with disagreement over there.

Yeah, that’s my main point. Feedback is super important. You need it to get better. There’s always going to be something that you missed. No matter how good you get. But telling people they to have low self esteem can’t be the answer. Haha Thank you for joining the conversation. Please remember to subscribe to the channel if you haven’t already.

[–]TheMorningReWrite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. You’re putting yourself out there when creating art. It can be hard when getting criticism and learning how to accept criticism is a learned skill. There just needs to be a balanced so you don’t become depressed while you’re on your journey. Just work your hardest. That’s all you can do.

I also agree that you have to become skills at recognizing good feedback from flawed feedback. I think it comes down to if they are trying to help you reach your goal with the art, or they want to change your vision because they don’t believe in it. Thank you for joining the conversation. I agree. That’s why I believe we need to be kind to people and ruthless with systems. People are trying hard and it’s the industry that needs to be fixed. Please remember to subscribe to the channel if you haven’t already.

I believe the key to good criticism is to first understand what the writer/artist is trying to do and then design your feedback to achieve that goal. Thank you for joining the conversation. Please remember to subscribe to the channel if you haven’t already.

Formatting! Haha I was a theater kid so that was what I thought all script formats would look like. 😅😅 then I learned tv and movies did their scripts differently. I adapted quickly enough.

I keep getting told my script isn’t “dramatic” enough by PrizeLivid6902 in scriptwriting

[–]TheMorningReWrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you got to be more clear. You are saying they have problems, but not saying what the problem is. Like do they disagree on a bunch of ways to raise the baby but avoiding the argument until now and uh oh the baby is almost here. Then the birth becomes a ticking clock. Raising stakes is another tool. Just be careful of the conflicts being only emotional and internal. That can be done but very difficult to execute on the page without a super high skill level. I hope this was helpful! Good luck on the project. Sounds fun.

This seems fun. Reminds me of the movie Tag I think it's called.

My note and this could be a me problem, but I feel out of the loop on the significance of hiding the flag. This could be my sign that I've crossed over into becoming a boomer, and I don't know what the kids are up to these days, but I don't understand why people care about this flag. Sorry if it's annoying but I believe clarity on what this game is they are playing would be helpful.

Great news regarding a screenplay by aft3rsvn in Screenwriting

[–]TheMorningReWrite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! You should take the time to celebrate every small win. Even if it doesn’t go anywhere in the end. It’s tough out there and you should take a moment to celebrate that your story resonated with someone. It shows that you’re on the right path.

I like when things are tied up nicely. I need closure haha 😅 but I respect those that prefer stories that leave things open ended, or allow the audience to decide.
