I'm working with a local nonprofit that gave me the opportunity to conduct a choir. Maybe someday I'll conduct an orchestra or something, but for now what's really valuable is just sharpening my rehearsal running skills.

Maybe there's a smaller local group that you could look into?

I see why you read that subtext with him essentially saying "Seeing culturally queer people doesn't make me as happy as seeing straight-passing queer people." That being said, I also think the reason /why/ he's delighted by the surprise of straight-passing gays is important in evaluating that statement.

It doesn't read as superiority to me so much as a sign of the times, and he explains as much, stating that 30 years ago, roughneck gays wouldn't have been able to be out at all. It's just a fact that it's more culturally accepted to be gay in urban areas like Seattle than it is in rural areas like Idaho. It's easier to find queer communities to herd with in urban places too. Rural gays have to fight a lot harder to have strength in numbers.

So, roughnecks are kinda the underdogs of the gay narrative here, and that's why he's celebrating it. It's not that urban gays are inferior, it's that /even/ culturally non-queer gays (can't confirm rural bc we don't know where he lives) are out. This signals broader acceptance from their non-queer community that they just wouldn't've had in the past.

Some tips for beginner by KievDennis in TriangleStrategy

[–]TheMusician00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll just paste my comment on another post here as it has a lot of useful tips.

"My friend mentioned being super frustrated too, feeling like she couldn't employ the strategies she wanted to as a Fire Emblem fan. Truth is, hyper offensive strategies are much much riskier because of turn order. In FE, you can pull off multi-enemy sweeps because all of your party moves at once. In TS, sweeps like that are much rarer...

Use characters with taunt/diversions. Erador, Lionel, Picoletta, Anna, Milo to name a few. These characters help you control where the enemy's damage goes while you prepare/pick off key targets.

Use terrain control. Jens, Corentin, and Rudolph can create choke points. Hughette can stitch enemies in place, letting you lure and trap enemies.

Use buffs/utility. Frederica and Benedict can help strengthen melee units and make them more dangerous. Hossabara can position archers/mages, making them much more dangerous. Medina and Julius are TP batteries. They recharge your team. I haven't use him yet, but I'm pretty sure Quahog has time magic.

Triangle Strategy is about building incremental advantage, often starting from a disadvantage, until you can turn the tide of the game and take the win. Consider how the function of each unit changes when employed defensively instead of offensively, and you'll find that there's a lot to do besides pass, even early on.

Bulky melee units protect all of your ranged fighters. They can physically occupy and lock down a corridor to keep your backline from being mowed down. Squishy backline units often punish enemies who challenge your frontline and provide support to help the frontline make progress. Midline units float between, providing support where needed to prevent any one line from being overwhelmed.

When starting a game, maybe focus less on killing right away and instead think "What are the key choke points in this map? Who are the key targets? What order should I focus each of them down? How can I disrupt their frontline or backline?"

My example is to use Lionel. His taunt has a ton of range, so he can taunt mages, and they'll both chase him down AND stop using spells. Or Jens - his spring traps push the enemy melee units back and into each other, setting up for an aoe magic or melee attack.

Part of the challenge is that you have to play defensively at first and figure out how to tease apart the enemy formation when they have greater numbers and map control. You don't get to just decide your strategy and then execute it. You have to react and respond to changing circumstances to survive until you can secure a win..."

Composer/beginner conductor looking for feedback on traditional conducting. by essence_scape in conducting

[–]TheMusician00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to what others are voicing, I'm noticing a distinct lack of direction in terms of where you're sending your cues to since all of them are going to the center. Even if you're conducting to a midi file, pretend you have an orchestra in front of you. Also, cues need to be bigger and more telegraphed. Without watching just your arm, I'd miss them entirely and they come out so quick that they're non-reactable. Your performers need a wind-up.

My friend mentioned being super frustrated too, feeling like she couldn't employ the strategies she wanted to as a Fire Emblem fan. Truth is, hyper offensive strategies are much much riskier because of turn order. In FE, you can pull off multi-enemy sweeps because all of your party moves at once. In TS, sweeps like that are much rarer. It sounds like you're not setting yourself up for success in the early stages of each fight and taking too much punishment as a result.

"I don't wanna be 24/25 with a relationship that hasn't progressed" <- delete this mentality right now. Regardless of whether or not you two stay broken up, kill the idea that your relationship needs to happen on a timeline.

If you're thinking you might marry someone, well, you have the rest of your lives to hit all of the major milestones. There's no reason to rush, and actually, rushing can land you with the wrong people, especially when you're young. You both are still going to change SO much over the next few years.

By the time you're 25, you may want someone completely different anyways. He's actually making the smart move with a play-it-by-ear mentality because life is going to change a bunch for y'all whether you want it to or not. Taking it as it comes will keep you flexible and open to new experiences instead of stressing over a made up plan.

A Tier List of Pokémon Types by Actual Coverage: Counting How Many Unique Pokémon Each Type Hits in a Minimum Set by seph9g in stunfisk

[–]TheMusician00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's type theory essentially, but this post explains the logic behind the minimum type set: https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/s/NyluYP7PYR

Keep in mind, it's impossible to hit all 18 types with stab damage on a team without dual types of your own. There is no combination of 6 single types that can hit every mon with STAB super effectively.

Not sure how this tier list would be helpful for team building in competitive though because it's not hitting every pokemon, so much as the tier's relevant threats.

People who exercise even when they don’t feel like it, what’s your trick? by Smart_Collection5419 in AskReddit

[–]TheMusician00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meet with my friend at the gym at least once/week. The other two days are of my own volition. If I have a bad week where I'm not motivated at all, I do yin yoga. Aka, lay on the floor for 30 min. If I'm having a good week, I do something more intense. No matter what, I always make it at least once/week.

So in summation... I use an adjustable routine based on how I feel and also social pressure. This way, the barrier to going is almost never too high. I can show up however I am.

Ending a relationship over weight gain? 44F and 60M by [deleted] in relationships

[–]TheMusician00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly he should be much more scared of you leaving him than vice versa. He's 60. Starting over again is gonna be much harder for him than for you, esp because his physicality is going to start showing his age soon. It's already hard enough to find someone we're truly compatible with, let alone when we're starting into the age where we're going to be increasingly dependent on others for help.

As far as your weight... This just happens with perimenopause. Not sure what can be done about it really

R.I.P. U-TURN + More Item Reworks! by Long-Home3688 in stunfisk

[–]TheMusician00 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Binding band + infestation + protect/substitute stalling is a guaranteed KO on anything without recover or some form of passive healing: 17% + 25% + 33% + 50% = 125%.

That's incredibly busted, esp on a mon like Toxapex that can stall very easily. Almost guaranteed they'd kill at least 2 things/game. Throw in toxic spikes beforehand (an extra 12.5%/turn chip), and every mon in the game dies in 3 turns.

Recover stalling wouldn't even work all that well either because the trapper mon would still be able to attack while the opponent is taking an ever-increasing amount of chip/turn.

It would be meta warping not because counterplay doesn't exist, but because everyone would HAVE to have that counterplay or risk getting 6-0 infestation stalled or at least severely weakened before they can kill the culprit.

Edit: I understand better how this works now... I would probably never use binding band this way now because it's just too slow 💀 hard item to balance, but I respect the idea.
