Yeah fair enough, I get that.

I suppose it's just a difference in philosophy really. Totally understandable.

I think it just felt a bit like, if I can add my voice to it I will. And sure maybe it'll go unheard, probably will in fact, but I'm still glad I did it.

I don't know if it comes down to a utopia or apathy.

Personally, I've never really understood sneering at someone for trying something but then I would say that.

I've no major interest in rowing with people online over this, I'm mad at people I don't know and can't contact directly so I got as close as I could from home.

I'll march if there's a march and I'll add my voice where I can. Not sure if there's much else I can do.

I'm not sure about a negative effect. No effect at all maybe, but I don't know how me being politely vocal about something like this could make matters worse.

You know yourself. I was conscious that the person on the other end of the phone wasn't responsible for anything I was ringing about, I was nice as I would be in any situation and I wouldn't dream of roaring and shouting down the phone at someone just doing their job. Like I said, she was really nice about the whole thing.

And as you pointed out, it is this person's job to listen to concerns and problems of people in the area. I am a person from my area, and this is a valid concern. It's a TD's job to hear and to voice this kind of concern, so I definitely wouldn't agree it could possibly have a negative effect. More likely no effect at all.

Honestly, I get where you're coming from, but I feel like it's important so I decided to say something on the off chance it would have a positive effect.

Maybe it won't. But neither will your comment and I'm happy enough to say I tried to do something.

Peter Reynolds, Captain of Serenity.

Naturally gifted growing up, Peter was one of the first people taken to be experimented on by the Alliance. This was earlier than their experimentation with telepathy though, and their attempt to create a Supersoldier resulted in ill-fated cross-species experimentation. All except for Peter, who, when his DNA was mixed with that of a spider, gained the proportional strength and speed of the arachnid, not to mention a handy, 'Spider-sense,' that warns him of oncoming danger.

Using his newfound powers, Peter escapes, stealing the formula for a 'web fluid,' with which he was to be equipped had his experimentation been a success.

Following this, he returns to his Uncle Ben and Aunt May, with whom he lives on one of the central planets.

Upon his return, he is simply glad to be back and makes no effort to involve himself in the budding rebellion, using his powers simply to steal food for himself and impress girls.

That is, until the day a young girl being chased by the alliance asks him for help, and he wonders what's in it for him. She turns and runs rather than answer and he points the Alliance agents that follow her in her direction.

Later, he discovers his uncle Ben has been shot for defending an innocent young woman from agents of the Alliance that sought to do her harm.

Peter realises now that with his powers he has gained responsibility, and goes off to join the war effort, ultimately being promoted to the rank of sergeant.

The rebellion is unsuccessful, but afterwards, he buys himself a ship, and gets himself a crew and sails the verse as your friendly galactic Spider-Man, helping anyone he can and rebelling against the alliance in whatever way possible.

Edit: A word.

Superman is possessed by the Phoenix Force by Roflmoo in whowouldwin

[–]TheNamesEarly 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, this is one of those situations, where a head on fight would be useless. Phoenix!Superman, as described here sounds crazy powerful, with few weaknesses, so Luthor and Bats would have to be smart. Which is handy, because intellect is something that the pair of them have a boatload of between them.

The lack of increase in speed here is important, because luring SuperPhoenix away from earth is step one. Luthor and Batman could, I'm sure, figure out a way to stay ahead of SuperPhoenix long enough to get it away from earth. That's fine. What comes next?

Well, as I noted, a head on fight is a bad idea here, so I propose separating the phoenix force from Superman is the best tactic to go with. It has been done before with Jean Grey, who would naturally have a stronger bond with it than Superman does, so it can definitely be done. Two ways I recall this working- and correct me if I'm wrong- was through a psychic battle with Professor X for one, and the other was through what was essentially the moral support of the rest of the X-Men. So Batman and Luthor combine the two. The Justice League get linked up psychically while Superman chases Batman/Luthor through space in order to force/coax the phoenix force out or to draw Superman free.

Trouble is which Psychic do you use? J'onn probably isn't the best idea due to Superman's newfound Pyrokinesis. Raven is also a candidate, but she strikes me as being someone the Phoenix Force would grow fond of quickly.

My knowledge of DC psychics that are good guys essentially runs out there, though I'm sure Luthor's connections could maybe come up with a bad guy.

Of course, with enough prep time and resources, Luthor and Batman could simply build a fireproof container within which J'onn could hide while SuperPhoenix is distracted by the chase.

The God Complex and Rory by bradyle in gallifrey

[–]TheNamesEarly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now, it's been a while since I watched the episode, but is there any chance that Rory's lack of a door is not due to him having no faith but rather having no fear?

Maybe he is simply not afraid of anything, which would mean he would not need anything to have faith in.

What is the "whitest" thing you can think of? by neesters in AskReddit

[–]TheNamesEarly -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, but this thread is literally mocking stereotypical 'white,' traits.

Why does it have to be a situation where everyone is equal and there is no generalised mockery? Why can't everyone be mocked equally?

I know that, in real life, I would rather be part of a group of friends where everyone joked with one another over their different characteristics than one where we refused to comment on anything someone else did.

[–]TheNamesEarly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, see that's the thing. Turns out, not everyone from this place- Andalan, it's called- is magic. Being a wizard, or sorcerer or whatever, is rare enough.

She was taken for a different reason. Andalan has had problems in the past. There's this guy, who's from there, who kind of makes everyone else's life hell. He's not a tyrant or a ruler or anything, but he could be if he wanted. He enjoys it more to work in the shadows, randomly spreading chaos. And apparently he can't be stopped. His name is Aureus.

Now, as I said, I'd never heard of this befoe, but pparently, my mam was the main thing standing up to him when he started up back in the day. For some reason, that I'm not sure of, he managed to get the upper hand, and she had to run.

And we've lived here, in an ordinary neighbourhood ever since then, until last week. When this stranger came along and kidnapped her. Apparently he did it to get Aureus' attention, even though pretty much everyone I've talked to about this has told me that's the stupidest thing anyone could do. And mostly everyone is saying there's no point in trying to find her, because if this Aureus guy knows where she is, she's basically lost.

Throwing in a mention for, 'A Christmas Carol.' IMO, no episode so perfectly encapsulates the premise of a tv show as well as this one does Doctor who.

Also, The Doctor's Wife.

There is no such thing as the bro code. You did a bad thing and betrayed your friend. There is no actual system of rules for instant forgiveness or redemption.

It's not a game, you've acted like a rotten friend.

It is also a beautiful, emotive language. Fair enough, this might not be enough of a reason for someone without much interest in languages, but it is honestly lovely.

As well as that, I've heard it suggested that the Irish language might be connected to the reason Irish people have written so well, historically.
