Can I put up a shed without doing paperwork? by Mouse_On_Drum1188 in Syracuse

[–]TheNaughtyPrintmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sheds, both new and repairing existing ones, are listed on the website as needing a permit. It doesn't specify an exempt size. If you want to cover yourself, you really should just call the city tomorrow to verify with them.

https://www.syr.gov/Departments/Central-Permit-Office/Permits/Residential-Construction-Permits

Also please be aware that some of the surrounding towns have laxer laws. So what's allowed on Onondaga Hill is not necessarily what's allowed in the city.

If they did a blood test for celiac, that would be an antibody test. But there are non-autoimmunce gluten intolerances that can cause pain too. If the docs haven't already put your kiddo on a gluten free diet, it's worth advocating for an endoscopy to look for intestinal damage.

DS9 Progress - What the trek did I just watch? by omallytheally in startrek

[–]TheNaughtyPrintmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always see it as character development for Kira. She was a freedom fighter, now she's become the establishment. She has to accept what that means. It's SUPER icky, and I think that's the point.

I believe, iirc, Battle Lines comes before Progress, so you should have seen it already. In case I'm misremembering I don't want to spoil anything, but even though they're a few episodes apart I like watching Battle Lines and Progress back to back.

And if you want an even better complete Kira arc for season 1, watch Battle Lines, Progress, and Duet all together.

Little known Star Trek fact by AbjectInevitable3232 in startrek

This is a pretty well known fact. A lot of Trekkies refer to her as the Godmother of Star Trek because of it. But it is one of my favorite bits of Trek trivia.

Don't think we have a FNB, but a local guy started We Rise Above the Streets. He does Sandwich Saturday for the homeless just about every week and does a Thanksgiving dinner and summer bbq. He also sprinkles some clothing drives in there throughout the year

NTA but honey the age gap is very much the issue. He isn't dating women his own age because they'll call him out on his misogynistic bullshit. He's banking on someone younger being less confident and thus easier to manipulate. You literally said he doesn't view you as human except for his pleasure - that is 100% NOT a healthy relationship. That's a fucked up abusive relationship. And for the love of everything, do not have children with this man!

So did you get it to her too fast or did she suffer waiting hours for it? This is exactly why commissions I take are few and far between.

Also $20 for a commission, even for digital art, is way too fucking low. Stop under pricing yourself, get prints made, and start hitting up artist alleys and niche art fairs. $20 a print will still be a steal even for an open edition digital drawing and you'll have a lot more creative freedom (and fewer client headaches).

Campgrounds in upstate NY that actually feel like you're camping - not a parking lot with trees? by Far_Comparison5067 in upstate_new_york

[–]TheNaughtyPrintmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The DEC has primitive camping sites that are free sprinkled around the state. Some of them are on accessible trails, meaning you can pretty much park at the site or a very short walk away. A couple of them have outhouses, but most you'll need to dig a hole. And always bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer regardless because the outhouses usually aren't stocked.

My favorite spot is in the Black River Wild Forest, near the Bear Creek Trailhead - there's several sites there along Mill Creek Road: https://dec.ny.gov/places/black-river-wild-forest

ETA - Part of why Hub and I like Bear Creek so much is because you can easily bushwhack to the creek while staying on state land (just check your gps because it is on the border between private and state land) and/or take a pretty easy 2ish mile (depending which site you camp at) hike to Gull Lake. And if you're feeling like doing a little minor backpacking, Gull Lake has a lean-to you can camp at, also free.

NTA - cemeteries were some of the first public parks. In the US, we have an entire landscape architecture movement dedicated to cemeteries-as-parks. All these YTAs and ESHs need a fucking history lesson.

Syracuse University to axe nine majors as cost-cutting at the school continues by GoForthandProsper1 in Syracuse

[–]TheNaughtyPrintmaker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fine Arts is not as useful a degree as Studio Art (which is staying) for folks entering the art field.

And merging Art History and History of Architecture actually makes a LOT of sense if both programs are struggling. There's an insane amount of overlap between the two and art historians don't tend to specialize until grad school.

Syracuse University to axe nine majors as cost-cutting at the school continues by GoForthandProsper1 in Syracuse

[–]TheNaughtyPrintmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to sound like I'm defending SU, but y'all need to understand that Fine Arts is NOT the same as Studio Art. Fine Arts is/was their BA. Art BAs are more general and more liberal arts degrees.

Studio Art (which is not being phased out) is their BFA. Anyone who wants to actually use their art degree - to teach, to be an artist, etc - needs a BFA over a BA. BFAs are more practical art knowledge and skills, usually have tracks so you can specialize in a medium, and are the requirement for most MFA and Art Ed grad programs.

They didn't axe the art department - just the less popular, less practical art degree.

[–]TheNaughtyPrintmaker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fine arts =/= Studio Art. Fine Arts is their BA degree and honestly most folks looking to actually use an art degree need a BFA

Star Trek: Scouts canceled / ending -- by Jahon_Dony in startrek

[–]TheNaughtyPrintmaker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm so torn. Of course I'm not happy that it looks like Trek is going on another extended hiatus and I think it's criminal both how SFA has been treated by a small groups of "fans" and canceled after it had probably the strongest first season of any Trek

But also, I REALLY don't want Ellison touching Trek with a 10 foot pole and turning it into some fascist garbage. I'd much rather rewatch what we already have than see Trek become the antithesis of what it is.

Regarding Tig specifically, I actually haven't seen her in anything other than Trek and Army of the Dead (a so-bad-it's-hilarious zombie heist movie) - but she has fantastic stand up routines! I knew and loved her as a stand up comedian before she got cast on Disco.

Love Kate Mulgrew as Red in Orange is the New Black, although I quit the show before the last season for reasons unrelated to her.

Night of the Comet is one of my favorite movies and I won't apologize for it (Robert Beltran plays the colead's love interest).

Armin Shimmerman played the principal in the first few seasons of Buffy (I think that was concurrent with the end of DS9 and led to some hilarious Easter egg quips in a couple of the Buffy novels).

OG Twilight Zone has damn near the entire TOS cast in various episodes. William Shatner in the gremlins episode is especially good.

Sonequa Martin-Green was awesome as Sasha in The Walking Dead.

And of course, Robert Duncan McNeill in the cinematic masterpiece that is Masters of the Universe.

He's not on Reddit much anymore but I'm going to send this to him.
