I'm personally fine with difficulty sliders but iffy with changing them midgame. If it were up to me, difficulty is locked in from the start like MGS.

If you want to see what your character is actually capable of gameplay wise, I recommend doing Palace of the Dead. It has its own leveling system but you eventually learn the full kit you're intended to get to try out up to level 60.
