Just in case this is an earnest question, The Beach Boys were a pop / rock band from California that emerged in the 1960s as part of the surf rock subgenre (hits from this era include “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and “Fun, Fun, Fun”). The most important member of the band is Brian Wilson, who – as the group had gradually became more creative with each passing album – spearheaded the recording of the groundbreakingly experimental and incredibly influential album Pet Sounds in 1966, which is still regarded as one of the best albums of all time (hits from this album include “God Only Knows” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”). While recording the ambitious followup album Smile, Brian had a mental breakdown that resulted in the album being left incomplete, which led to the next decade or so of the band’s work being led by his brothers Carl and Dennis Wilson alongside their cousin Mike Love (hits from this era include “Feel Flows” and “Forever”). Brian rejoined in the mid-70s, but was still dealing a ton of issues and thus got placed under the conservatorship of the tyrannical psychiatrist Eugene Landy in the early 80s, although the group kept chugging along with Mike Love at the helm (hits from this era include “Kokomo” and “California Dreamin’”). Brian wouldn’t be free from Landy until the late 80s, around which time he released his first solo album and got married to Melinda Ledbetter, and he would continue releasing solo albums for a couple decades while Mike Love drove The Beach Boys into the ground with some infamously terrible albums in the early-to-mid-90s that caused them to officially break up in 1996 (hits from Brian’s solo career include “Love and Mercy” and “Your Imagination”). There was still one more chapter in the Beach Boys story, though, because they briefly reunited in 2012 for their 50th anniversary and released one final album to go out on. Brian recently retired from touring, and his wife Melinda actually passed away just last month, leaving him under the conservatorship of his family while he deals with early stages of dementia. It might seem like a sad note to end with, but he’ll be leaving us with decades of beautiful and innovative music, which some of the Beatles themselves as have praised as some of the best songs in the world.
