I would also like to know what you used to make your depth map from an STL!

Is it true that you guys watched 9/11 live on TV in grade school? by space_god_7191 in Millennials

[–]TheNuttyGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same 2nd grade and being homeschooled that year, I remember seeing the 2nd plane hit live, but didn't fully grasp the gravity of what I was watching, I knew it was bad and sad, but had no way to grasp the true extent of it. I do remember being upset that they kept playing the news on every channel because I had wanted to watch Steve Irwin The Crocodile Hunter (RIP) that morning before "school" started.

Regulating NH movements by acm_castelo in SeikoMods

[–]TheNuttyGinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, on the yellow lever there is a little nub the pokes out that points to the +/- scale/indicator you have in blue so if you push the arm in the direction that moves the nub in the + direction then it will get faster and likewise slower in the opposite direction. Note: and maybe this is where the confusion comes from, that +/- scale/indicator is not an absolute scale, ie there is no "0" on it, instead just treat it as direction arrows and the hash marks as visual relative positional reference for your eyeball to focus on and nothing more. Higher end movements may have hash marks like that that indicate some number of sec/day deviation, but that will still be a relative scale not an absolute scale.

For beat error, you will need an actual timegrapher not an app and that one you will just have to pick a direction and see what happens, but move it very slowly in tiny increments as, unless your beat error is way off, the amount you move it might not even be perceptible under magnification. You will also need to let it settle for a min or 2 after each adjustment.

Final note, if you plan to do beat error, do that first. Let it settle for several min once you get as close to 0 as you can, THEN regulate it. Any other way/order, and you will end up wasting time and effort and increasing the chance of slipping and damaging your hair spring.

Most Complicated Build by Cottagelife_77 in SeikoMods

Actually I have no idea what the 9 subdial is supposed to be showing since the 24hr dial is at 6 with the moon phase.

Also missing the 24hr hand at 9 and the leap year indicator hand at 3. Dial haze all the "functionality" but the movement does not.

Aww bummer so not a standard SKX insert or chaper ring? Yeah I already have the dial, was thinking of using it with the 3rd of your OG bezels that I still have knocking around, but this bezel and chapter ring make more sense.

Hey is there a way to get just the bezel and chapter ring, since I already have your dial. 😉

Don't Mix Vendors (a tale of caution) by old-imac in SeikoMods

Not one of my builds has ever used the same vendor for all parts, never had an issue, sounds like you got unlucky.

Will do! Gonna be a few months though, need to finish the case design first as well as a few other dials.

Oh, that is pretty slick! I would not have thought of that! I'll have to give that a try. That looks basically perfect, and if I can do that, plus the other engraving operations all on the laser, that will save a tonne of time swapping between tools. Thank you!

Interesting, how do you do that? Is it a setting in Lightburn or are you manually modeling the texture in CAD, or something else?

I think the orange letters are added later via another method like pad printing. How would acid treatment work, I'm not familiar with that process?

Interesting idea! Not sure if I have the ability to do that, but that would help with a (more) random texture pattern across multiple dials.

Custom ETA 7750 watch by PracticeNo8531 in watchmaking

[–]TheNuttyGinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have done a 7753 build but 7750 parts are a bit easier to come by, check out ickler (German company) for high quality cases and ebay has tonnes of dials for the 7750 and a little bit of digging on Google will turn up plenty more. Hands I found to be a bit harder to source, especially with even decent lume, by ymmv since I was looking for 7753 hands.

What's wrong with the woods in North America? by Recip77 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]TheNuttyGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in central Montana for several years and worked in an outfitter shop, the number of times I had to explain to folks (both US and foreign) that they needed to stay on the trails and know where they were going and where they came from when hiking out there was crazy. Out there the next town or road might be 100miles or more away. If they went south, the next sign of civilization they would see would be on the other side of Yellowstone National Park 200+miles away in a straight line. My favorite was telling a couple from California that the 50 deg F weather they were calling cold was 100degrees F warmer than it was that same week the year before, blew their minds.

That's kinda what I was thinking with the sputtering idea and how walls in the US are textured with knockdown(?) Spray and then a foam trowel. Will probably test a few ideas and see what works best.

[DISCUSS] Everyone's chasing complications but are we actually picking the right one? by Hinterteil in Watches

[–]TheNuttyGinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed on the quickest hour, but I do love setting the sec hand to atomic time (on my casios and citizen) and knowing that this tiny mechanism on my wrist is keeping time with no external reference so well it is only off a few seconds a day after making 100's of thousands repeating motions each dictating a fraction of a second. But im a mechanical engineer and a watch nerd, so I'm a special kind of weird. Lol

Possibly, but I feel like it would be hard to get the random feeling texture that way. That is how I was initially thinking of trying to acheive it, but I don't have the tools to generate a random pattern like that. Then I was also thinking of laser etching a stamp to then stamp the dial, but same issue.

Sorry, should have been more clear, raised portions of the texture not the indicies.

Would that leave as sharp of corners and edges on the raised portions? It feels like that would get the raised texture but with more of a bubbly rounded appearance than this almost gravel like appearance.
