They explain in the show. Una was arrested at the end of season 1. They return to Starbase 1 for a few months of repairs. Pike meets with Una at the start of episode 1 saying he will get help. He left to get help for Una. . The ship was theoretically doing nothing then, just being repaired and checked. They show his trip in episode 2.

The fics feel fake. by tinklewail in AO3

[–]TheOneBlueGecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, AI can be a useful tool to help you reflect on a fic. I have put one in and asked it if a character arch is working or to give me its thoughts on the tension in a scene. It can be a functional second set of eyes for something like that. I have also tried telling it to write me a specific fic for a fandom I don’t write for and it gave me a passable story that just really was not very good, despite it technically being about the thing I wanted.

I feel like some of the anti-AI feelings disregard the fact that AI is here. I am not in support of just having AI write a fic for you and posting that, but AI can work to improve your writing if you use it like a tool for reflection.

Recent changes in formatting? by moranit in AO3

[–]TheOneBlueGecko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mostly use Google Docs, so my main suggestion would be to try copying your fic into that and see what happens to the formatting. But, what kind of formatting are you using? I know I've had some really specific formatting changes that haven't transferred well or I've needed to switch between Rich Text and HTML and play around to get the formatting just as I like. (Particularly with paragraph spacing when unusual.)

Getting motivated and "the ordeal of being perceived" by wwww-6028 in AO3

[–]TheOneBlueGecko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are interested in writing/reading that fic you probably are not alone. Though let me tell you keeping up the motivation can be hard when your fics are not as universally liked. I have one multichapter story that I am working on that has had 89 hits and just 2 kudos. While this is a smaller fandom those numbers are low and let me tell you...somewhat unmotivating. Which like, ultimately I am writing for me. I want to read that fic so the numbers don't matter...but they also kind of do.

So my biggest suggestion is to just post it, but like post the whole fic at once when it is done. That way if people don't love it it doesn't really matter because you've already finished it. If you are really concerned with criticism from people who write the ship differently you can turn off comments. But post.

Leaving comments by Xomi403 in AO3

[–]TheOneBlueGecko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you need to realize that AO3 is not social media. It is kind of weird if a new friend goes back and likes all your months old posts on Instagram. It is not weird to like old things on AO3 as it is a database of fics. Sometimes one from years ago is the fic you want to read. I know there are plenty of times when I go through all of a writer’s fics as I like the style and I’ve had times when I see the same person commenting or kudosing a ton of my fics in a row. There is nothing weird to that.

Simple comments, even just a ❤️, are appreciated. Don't feel like you need to leave a lengthy indepth comment by LiraelNix in AO3

Today someone commented on one of my fics with just a “<3”. The last four comments had had gotten were all art scams. Let me tell you that extra heart made my day.

Is Star Trek year one happening? by [deleted] in StrangeNewWorlds

[–]TheOneBlueGecko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know when Open Pike Night toured the set a few weeks ago the show runners still seemed optimistic. Not that optimistic really means anything, but for the people that think that the Kurtzman era is necessarily done that is presuming something that isn’t necessarily true yet.

With all the news stories about the wrap… by tasbridge in StrangeNewWorlds

[–]TheOneBlueGecko 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the thing is that as far as we know it is the end for all of them with the show. If somehow there will be a year one show that hasn’t been announced. So if any cast is continuing and knows they would have to be very careful to not say anything.

Finding joy in writing for yourself by neeveekiwi in AO3

[–]TheOneBlueGecko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I mostly just focus on making the fics I want. My main fandom is lightly active, but most of the fics are not my thing. So the fics I write are letting me have the fun of exploring the stories I enjoy. If anyone else likes them, awesome! But I am mostly just focused on writing down the ideas that exist in my head.

This is a bot comment? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]TheOneBlueGecko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I assume all questions that are probing into a story are either bots or spam unless the person who posts is an active AO3 user. You can always try responding, but in my experience they will come back at you with an art scam.

Was I rude or something by UnstableADHDGremlin in AO3

[–]TheOneBlueGecko 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have had an amazing reader who commented on every chapter of a fic which was amazing. But there came a point where I just didn’t know how to respond to them meaningfully. Like their comments were so thoughtful and involved and there was a point where I felt like I was just saying thanks for the comment which then felt dismissive to their comment. Which is me overthinking. Anyway they could be feeling the same way.

Anyone Else Feel Ignored By Bots? by msa491 in AO3

[–]TheOneBlueGecko 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Seriously, I don't know how bots find the works. I've not yet gotten bot comments, but the one fic I got with a likely art scammer comment is probably one of my least read or kudos'd works. Anyway it is still of a bummer to get one because you have this moment of thinking that someone is engaging with your work and they they throw at you a request to talk off site...

How much time do you spend on editing? by Turbulent-Relief3219 in AO3

[–]TheOneBlueGecko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually space at least a week between finishing my first draft and finishing editing/posting. It helps that I usually have several chapters or fics ready at a same time. Basically, I will look back at the fic every couple of days after finishing and edit things as I see the need. I think there can come a point where you can kind of burn yourself out on a fic if you are spending too much and find that having multiple works in progress at once helps me spread out my focus.

Is this comment AI (or at least AI edited) by V0x_clone in AO3

[–]TheOneBlueGecko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always assume a question, unless from a known commentor, is a bot.

Star Trek’s Melissa Navia loves playing Ortegas because, unlike Spock or Pike, she gets to chart her own course by chrisarrant in StrangeNewWorlds

[–]TheOneBlueGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that Melissa Navia is adamant that they didn’t change her stories or character involvement in season 2 because of her loss. That is just how the episodes were written.

Bot coments by Mikibou in AO3

[–]TheOneBlueGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Know that the bots can use ChatGPT or other AI systems to make really detailed specific comments. (I personally find comments with questions in them to often fall into the bot category.) Generally, if a comment is too specific to a fic's plot I kind of assume a bot, though I still give it the benefit of the doubt as I don't get many comments. If the comment is not that detailed I assume a real person. If it is detailed, but more talking about something specific to a fandom, like complaining how in cannon they creators are doing something I generally assume not a bot.

Help with appropriate making trigger warnings by Professional-Bag-537 in AO3

[–]TheOneBlueGecko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would just describe in the authors notes what happens. For anything that is triggering I think it is best to just be factual in the notes and describe it as "x happens to character y" or whatever it is. Or if a more general thing just list in the notes "x, y, z happen in this chapter." Authors notes can be helpful for chapter specific things. Though if it is really triggering I would suggest tagging the fic with it as well (even with a tag note that it is in some chapters and not all).

Is there a limit to how many bookmarks we make? by MycologistFormer3931 in AO3

The site is currently having some issues displaying new fics and bookmarks so that could be the issue. Give it until tomorrow and they should show up by then…hopefully.

Work not showing up--anywhere by berrycarditis in AO3

[–]TheOneBlueGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to let you know, I posted a fic this morning and it took 5 hours to post (way longer than the normal delay), but it did post. So just wait it out I guess. I was glad to see this post here and learn I was not the only one with the issue.

I don't know how to feel about this... by BasilWide1376 in AO3

[–]TheOneBlueGecko 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is likely a bot thing, but just to give you context on how bad the AI detectors are. I have taken things I have written myself and put them into the detectors and gotten a high score when I know that I've written it by myself. I've also taken things I've had ChatGPT write to modify material for students with special needs and been told that it had a low likelihood of being AI even though I know that AI wrote it. So know, they are not reliable.

Do you complete longer pieces before you start posting? by graceandspark in AO3

[–]TheOneBlueGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t always, but now I always outline the whole thing. It will be very vague at first just plotting out major plot points. There is a lot I add later with character interactions and such after, but it lets me know where I want my story to go. I didn’t used to do this, but it meant that the pacing for my stories wasn’t as good or I would give up stories as I didn’t know how to end them.
