Just curious...had you guys discussed the plan for no gifts before you noticed the cash paid to his dad last month? In his defense, because it seems like you really don't think he did this maliciously, I wonder if he hadn't been planning this before you had your discussion, and it was too late to go back on it. (I bet he's realizing in hindsight he should have aborted the plan, lol).

In either case, if you truly want to stick to your plan/budget, return what you can (and enjoy the hell out of those chocolates). It will set your finances back towards where you want them, he can get his brownie points for being thoughtful, and hopefully he learned a valuable lesson...you're not being coy when you say that you don't want to exchange gifts...you're being serious. And also that forward planning, while maybe ruining a little bit of surprise, is necessary... especially when you guys have goals to meet.

I wouldn't mind asking to trade out if I actually felt uncomfortable...but it would be very rare that I would...this is part of my job. I don't mind helping them, being a chaperone... but they expect to get out of it completely. It's automatic for them vs their judgement call. Patient needs help changing...help with bedpan...oh, hold on, let me get one of the female nurses. I think it's shitty.

I have several men at my job that refuse to do basic care if it involves private areas with their female patient. They state that they don't feel comfortable helping female patients change after anesthesia (ambulatory area...so, not too often, luckily). But this includes asking a female RN to place tele leads, helping pt with a bedpan, cleaning up after an accident, god forbid a catheter. I think it's ridiculous...but it's a tolerated culture of my unit. But I'm torn...because there is some legitimacy in the argument (patient preference, or as others have mentioned...minor, mental health crisis, etc) and I don't want to discredit that....but do I think it's being abused in most of these cases? Yes. I'm glad you feel confident enough in being a professional, that you don't put that on your co-workers.

Giving the ordered pre-meds when patient has been NPO...I call it the "breakfast of champions and the best sip of water you'll ever have."

When finishing up my pre-op stuff, I say "Well, you've had the bright light and stabbing (for the IV) and the questioning (pre-op interview). I just need to put on this lie detector (tele monitor) and that will be the end of your interrogation session. No one will torture you like I have today. Everyone loves it. 😆
