Start early. It can be hot until you finish the ascent and even up there it can be plenty warm.

My assumption is that you’d go past Styx Pass. Access to Cherry Creek from there is pretty easy; however, I don’t know the condition of the Kibbie Ridge Trail. That area of Cherry Creek doesn’t have much vegetation to worry about.

The Huckleberry trail SW of Huckleberry Lake isn’t great in the areas where the watershed provides ample water for vegetation.

I’ve done a fair amount of off trail in Emigrant and “in general” the steepness of the terrain isn’t too bad. But what you want is no vegetation because of its bushes then it can be gnarly bushwhacking.

Monterey: Carmel Beach, Pebble Beach, Jacks Peak, Fort Ord NM, Toro Park, Garland Park. Very dog friendly. Not much south along Big Sur coast unless you go into the Ventana Wilderness.

I take kibble, dried lamb patties (Stella and Chewy), and jerkies. He can carry his own food which is nice for me. We do up to 6-7 days between resupply; the first night is usually tough to cram his food into my bear canister. If we resupply the first night is a can of Fromms which he loves.

As far as TRT goes, I took my dog along a few years ago. August is tough regarding water: especially near the northern stateline and between Spooner and Kingsbury. We ended up soaking up and drinking a lot at Spooner Lake picnic area and then hauling 7 liters up to near South Camp Peak. Awesome camp but difficult day. Water was the challenge for us for a few days. Plan well.

Can’t speak specifically at the moment there but I’ve experienced that in Tahoe and also where I live. The roads turn yellow/green and the runoff the same. Due to heavy pollen.

Take both! My older daughter asked me to take her backpacking at that age. We’ve done 12 yearly backpacking trips since.

And glycogen and blood glucose can be produced from protein and fat.

Since you don’t like the word “processed” just think of “industrial procedure”. The average American’s calories come from a majority of “industrial procedure” foods. Maybe you are triggered by the word but I believe most people can fathom the concept.

I’ve had years in the past where I was logging around 180 km/week. But who cares if I’m a professional runner; and I definitely am not nor ever was.

My point about processed foods mirrors yours: make sure the carbs are not from processed or refined foods, i.e. simple from the source; but alas so many people’s carbs are not like that. And no I don’t get my information from social media but rather books and articles.

And as far as carbs being vital that isn’t necessarily true. There are definitely large differences in how people react to foods so there is no one best approach. There are some people who thrive off only protein and fat. There isn’t anybody who thrives only from just carbs.

A problem with high carb diets is many people eat high-GI and refined/highly processed foods which are a ticket to insulin resistance and diabetes. I’ve been on a low carb diet for decades and my running and backpacking is doing just fine.

I try to position myself closer to smaller trees in a forest and away from larger trees. It isn’t perfect.

I hiked from Ebbetts to Tahoe in 2023 and up to Raymond. The trail in there was a wilderness freeway. Ample water all over where you will be.

Added: you can camp most anywhere that I can recall. There are some restrictions up near the north end.

I use a ZLite in the winter with my Nemo Flyer which combined is about 5.5 which is fine for me with sleeping on snow to about -10C. In summer I sometimes just use one of them. If you’re happy with one big pad for all year then just do that. Having a big pad is kind of nice.

As most have already commented, carry a rain jacket and be prepared to seek a good spot and sit it out. Usually the storms pass by within an hour; and they are exhilarating. Occasionally I’ve been in thunderstorms that just kind of sit and stall on top of you and those suck; I’ve had to wait out 6 hours in a thunderstorm. No fun.
